  • @georgecostanza2695

    To clarify electric motor performance: the power an ICE produces varies according to the speed at which it spins. There's a sweet spot in the middle where an engine makes it's max power and torque. But they're weak at low rpm, so you have to build up the revs, and the power tapers off at high rpms so you have to bring the revs down. Using a transmission, the engine can turn at different rpm for any given road speed. For example: you're travelling at 40mph in 4th gear and the engine is turning 2000rpm - but there isn't enough power to accelerate... you can change to 3rd gear, the rpms then go up to 3000 where the engine makes more power. EVs can make tremendous power and torque right from 0 rpm and throughout most of their rev range, thus negating the need for a transmission. However the motors still have a power curve that tapers off at high rpm. Since they have no gears, the relationship between motor rpm and road speed is fixed. In other words, high speed equals high rpm and vice versa. Therefore the faster you go in an EV the weaker it gets as motor power tapers off.

    • @marioformicadae6637
      @marioformicadae6637 ปีที่แล้ว

      EVs could use gears, but they don't for some reason

    • @georgecostanza2695
      @georgecostanza2695 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@marioformicadae6637 With a very narrow operating range of several thousand rpm, ice cars use multiple gears because they have to. High performance EV motors only use a single speed step down gear because they have such a wide range (0 to over 20,000rpm) of power and torque delivery… they technically could use a multi speed transmission, but it would only serve to hinder performance due to mechanical losses caused by directing power through unnecessary gearing. That being said however, lower end, less powerful electric motors could benefit with the right type of transmission (see Inmotive), providing more more speed and efficiency with two or three gears.

  • @MADMAX7330

    Not to nit pick, but power is calculated as 2*pi*Motor speed*Torque. For electric motors, the power usually builds up to peak near the max motor speed, while the torque weans down with speed. So off the launch, you felt max torque, and not max power.

      I really hope they make like a traditional but futuristic looking SUV. I know there is Model X but that thing looks like if Model S had an older brother. Some like it, some don't. They would really tank ICE sales if they made an appealing Lexus alike if not a very high tech looking SUV seating 5 or 7.

    • @ataraxy272
      @ataraxy272 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No Gearbox or transmission in current Teslas, thats why you lose some horsepower at higher speeds. The Porsche Taycan has a 2 speed gearbox which is what makes it faster at higher speeds than the Teslas, but you also lose efficiency from friction having a gearbox.

    • @millll111lllI
