    Found you on Reddit having a discussion with a TH-camr I watch, a lot flew over my head lol but it was interesting nonetheless. Seems like a great thing to have someone listen to you and help figure things out but learning on my own is the only viable option I have right now. Thank you for uploading, its the closest I can get to a teacher and I appreciate it 😊

    Can you do a vocal breakdown on how to sing riffs and runs like Brandy please Im a singer can you help me extend my range and do riffs and runs properly and sing with power like Whitney Houston and Tevin Campbell? When I record myself on my phone it sound bad does that mean I cant sing?

  • @Crimetales123
    @Crimetales123 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    have some questions. I listened to Whitney Houston growing up, and I can sing a few songs it seems. But, I don't have a clue what notes she is hitting. Can I sing without knowing the notes of a song? And do I have to study a music sheet? Like, am I supposed to know what a c sounds like? A c verses a g etc.?If you have to know what the notes are beinging sung, then how do you remember the notes without a music sheet or person singing? Memorize the notes?

    Marvell can u make a video on how to get a chesty mixed instead of thinning out? Your mixed sounds very nice a d identical to your chest voice compared to 90% of vocal coaches

    • @VocalLiberation
      @VocalLiberation  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks. Just about every video on my channel is covering that topic in some form. It's a combination of being loud enough (not backing off when you get to your bridge range) and modifying your vowel the right way AS you maintain that volume.
      Mix and chest voice are the same thing to me. It all feels like chest voice to me. I don't leave my chest voice unless I'm intentionally trying to do a falsetto type sound. If you haven't seen it already, episodes 1 and 5 in The Path to Vocal Mastery might be very good for you to check out.

    Hey Marnell, I don’t know why when I sing I can’t sing loud when I do it i sound terrible and my throat hurt but when I sing quietly I sound good and I can do riffs and runs Can you explain me what I’m doing wrong

    • @VocalLiberation
      @VocalLiberation  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi. Unfortunately, it's impossible to tell what might be going on based on your description. It could be any number of things. If you're airy or breathy when you sing loud, then that is a major issue which will cause a lot of irritation of the throat. If that is the case, you will want to watch my video on how to sing clearly.

    Is it true that as a beginner , you have to 'squeeze' higher notes to familiarize your vocal chord to that sensation of squeezing ? So after a while , you can lessen the squeeze .

    • @VocalLiberation
      @VocalLiberation  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It depends on how it's done. Everyone starts at a different place. Some people start with not enough squeeze. Some people start with too much squeeze. The way you sing your vowels is very important in this process.

    Hey marnell my passagio is at f4# does that mean I'm a low tenor? I've read on a website and it said people who break at f4# are low tenors and g4# and are medium tenors and A4/A4# are high tenors. Is this true? Or does the passagio not detained whether you're a high tenor or high baritone or low baritone or whatever?

    • @VocalLiberation
      @VocalLiberation  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm not sure the source of the information you were reading and what he/she was trying to convey -- but I've never seen a tenor have their first bridge at A#4. That is closer to where children and women bridge at, not men who have already gone through puberty. Also, where one breaks has nothing to do with the passaggio. That's a matter of keeping enough chest voice connection. I've seen some underdeveloped tenors breaking at C4. It's simply miscoordination.
      Most men will experience their passaggio at either E4 or F4, give or take a note depending on the voice. (If one is a REALLY low bass, they MIGHT experience their passaggio on Eb4. If you have a VERY high voice, MAYBE you might experience it on F#4.) The passaggio is a VOWEL thing. The vowel influences the underlying vocal cord coordination. It has nothing to do with breaking.
      Your passaggio is not the primary factor that determines voice type. It can give a clue as to voice type, but it's not the sole deciding factor. The deciding factor is whether you have enough presence in the low end (to possibly be considered baritone) as well as the range you can live in CONSISTENTLY. For instance, there are tenors who can vocalize down to an F2. It's not that uncommon. But the ability to sing a song that constantly dips in and out of that range is another story altogether. They can't LIVE in that range with any kind of consistency without imbalancing their voices.
      That said, a person's passaggio can change a bit as they keep training and better balancing their voices. That's why you can't really base your voice type on passaggio. You just learn to use your voice correctly, because it's the same technique regardless of voice type. Once you learn how to keep your voice as a whole balanced, THEN you figure out what kind of range your voice wants to most comfortably live in. You need a teacher to help you through that process, especially with the balancing of the passaggio, because it's not JUST about the passaggio, it's about how the balance of the voice is sitting as a WHOLE. Meaning, how are low notes being approached. How are middle notes (from Bb3-F4) being approached. How is that influencing the passaggio from F4-Ab4. How is that influencing the way you approach your second bridge range at A4 and Bb4. If any of those parts is off, it skews how your entire voice is supposed to work and thus will make you come to misguided conclusions.

      Wow! Thank u so much marvell for the descriptive information! But in this video th-cam.com/video/arQqPa2KIz0/w-d-xo.html at 2:30 Bruno mars is singing e4/f4s and sings them on the same volume as normal tenors/singers sing below C4! And also, when he hits the G4 it sounds as he's not even trying at all to hit the note and it hitting it in the same volume as other singers hit E4s! Doesnt this make his passage at A4? Most people need to sing very loud to even hit E3s but he hita e4s at the same volume as he sings a3s. How does he do that? Doesnt this mean his first passagio is at a4?

    • @VocalLiberation
      @VocalLiberation  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're welcome. My name is Marnell, btw.
      When it comes to volume, how loud or how soft someone is will just depend on their particular voice. Some people naturally have softer voices than others. Bruno Mars is one of those people. It can be built up more with training, but still the voice will have its own volume range where it likes to sit.
      The volume level also affects the way you approach the passaggio. It's hard to tell the passaggio when someone sings as soft as he is on the E4's and F4's. You need to be at least at a medium loud volume for the passaggio to reveal itself.
      That said, by the time he gets to G4, he is definitely in his passaggio. (i.e. "known" at 2:38). Which makes me believe that if he sang through his middle range with more volume (which he rarely ever does), he would be transitioning on an F#4 most of the time, and on F4 sometimes, depending on the effect he wanted to go for and how the phrase was set up. Listen to the VOWELS. Don't pay attention to the volume. Listen to the way he sings the VOWELS. Passaggio is all about vowels!

    Hi, I would really love to sing. I have absolutely NO experience with singing and when I tried listening to myself, I sounded like a dying whale. I would really like to learn and as a complete beginner, where would you suggest I start? I can't pay for lessons because they're too expensive and I don't plan to sing as a profession but as a hobby.

    • @VocalLiberation
      @VocalLiberation  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi William. I'm not sure exactly what your issues are. If you can't sing in tune yet, then I would suggest doing some ear training with a program based around relative pitch for a tonal center. Functional Ear Trainer is a free program that does this. It's available for the computer as well as a phone app. Then you would need to practice singing along with a drone. Matt Otto's web site has good files for this. If you do a google for "matt otto drones", it should come up. You will likely need a teacher with this process though. You'll be singing the same solfege syllables you use in the Functional Ear Trainer, but now singing it with a drone. Alternatively, you could also get a short course called Improvise for Real: Sing the Numbers. It's currently $24. But again, you will need someone to tell you whether or not you're singing in tune in the beginning stages. improviseforreal.com/Products/sing-numbers-1-ifr-tonal-map
      If you can sing in tune but you just don't sound good, then it's either a technique issue or a phrasing issue. Or a combination of both. I cover both in this video. In Episode 2 of The Path to Vocal Mastery, I cover phrasing more.

    How to stay on pitch instead of being flat?

    • @VocalLiberation
      @VocalLiberation  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends on how you sing the vowel, how loud you sing, and what part of your range you're in. So unfortunately, there is not quick, easy answer to this question. A lot of what you have to do is specific to the phrase of the song you're singing.
