    Use the exercise, but instead of sniffing, breathe in through the mouth and let the belly relax as I demonstrated here.

    Hey Marnell, just wanted to pop here to thank you personally for this video in specific and also for your help. I can't thank you enough!
    To anyone reading: I had a weak, hoarse and unbalanced voice for years. After trying so many exercises, different voice teachers, and even doctors who told me what I have is "psychosomatic".. I came to Marnell almost on the edge of despair. The things he taught me were life transforming. This guy absolutely knows what he's saying.
    Back to my issue: after so many years of struggle, the tip Marnell shares in this video was the main "core" issue that caused most of my vocal issues.
    Sometimes people develop a habit of overbreathing without they are aware of it. It can be sometimes caused due to poor life habits, like sitting for hours in front of a screen or working out like crazy. And then you just walk around with lungs "filled to the max" with air, and without you even being aware of it, you whole body has to "adapt" to hold this. Your shoulders raise up, you neck tightens up, and your whole vocal mechanism already goes out-of-balance before you even start to vocalize.
    So this was a life changing thing for me. It took me sometime to adapt to breathing properly, but I can say that with enough practice it becomes second nature! This video definitely deserves more views, likes, and comments! And again, I can't thank Marnell enough for this and for everything else he taught me on posture and cord closure.

    Thanks, friend! You're always ready with the exact reminder I need at the moment! :)
    Not sure if I've always had this habit, but if I don't pay attention, I do easily become "gaspy." Adding this to the list of skills I need to deliberately practice in order to move them from "conscious competence" to "unconscious competence."

      I was hoping that you would eventually get around to seeing this video. Figured it would be a good reminder for you. :P

    Always love your videos - you always seem to address specific topics in ways i don't see often - not sure i have this problem since i feel i improve everyday - but i definitely regonize it as a possible issue to be aware of and it's good to have a great source to help with troubleshooting in a precise detailed way. This kind of reminds me of a video i saw some months ago - a small youtuber "voice teacher" called beth williams - who made a video on "passive breathing". Seems to be a similar concept. Love the outfit btw - very classy looking. The coat almost has a mobster vibe going on lol. This new youtube notification system is quite annoying - i'll have to press the bell thingy to stay updated with your stuff.

      Thanks. I appreciate it. I will have to check out Beth's video.
      And I can totally dig the mobster look!
      You're not the only one that's been having issues with the notification system. It's been going on ever since they switched to the new version of TH-cam last year. A lot of people don't get notified when I upload a new video. So sorry about that.

    I just loved this video! I have exactly the same problem, but I also sound so weird , different and so weak when I try to sing correctly instead of singing with the throat, its crazy...

    • @VocalLiberation
      @VocalLiberation  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Glad you liked it. When you are first applying correct technique, the sound of your voice might come across differently. That's fine and actually expected as your throat and body are learning a new way of making sound. But as you keep practicing, more of the naturalness should come back in.

    • @VocalLiberation
      @VocalLiberation  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That's too open ended of a question to really tell anything. It could be a technique thing. It could be the result of you having been sick recently. Perhaps your cords are swollen. You really need someone who can sit and observe you sing and assess you to come to any type of conclusion.

    Hey marnell I'm a 16 year old male and I've went from a dying donkey to being able to hold a tune with good breathing but I have a problem. Whenever I sing at around E4 my voice goes into head voice and super airy and weak how do I make it sound good

    • @VocalLiberation
      @VocalLiberation  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You'd really need someone to hear you to see what's going on, but based on your description, I would guess that your voice is too weak right now. Your chest voice should be strong at least up to an F4, otherwise the voice will break as you are describing.

    • @VocalLiberation
      @VocalLiberation  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, you've gotten a lot better with the overbreathing, especially as you've gotten rid of more of your jaw tension and the excessive smiling.

    hi marnell i wanna ask you is it normal to sing some songs better than other cause i have this thinking that when someone can sing he can sing anything ...or maybe it doesnt fit my voice color what do u think of that ?!

    • @VocalLiberation
      @VocalLiberation  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, this is common for everyone. Some songs will feel like they are a perfect fit for you while others you have to work at a bit harder to feel good. Just sing songs that bring out the best of what you have to offer to the world!

    • @lovingwinds1741
      @lovingwinds1741 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      thank u marnell !

  • @lovingwinds1741
    @lovingwinds1741 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    marnell do you think this tip can help with breath support also ? and do you think is better than your first vidéo from " how to strenthen you mix vidéo " cause you said the first video it adresses the issue of overbreathing ?

    • @VocalLiberation
      @VocalLiberation  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wouldn't say this is BETTER than the first video, but rather, a complement to the first video. This gets more into how you apply it directly to songs to stay in that free state when you have one line coming in right after the other, and don't have a lot of time to think about things.
      Just FYI, this video is NOT addressing breath support. Breath support is an entirely different issue. Breath support is more about what you do on the exhalation -- that is, when you're actually making sound. This is more about the INHALATION.

    Brother I have seen many of your videos and I have concluded that singing is like a big balloon, if you put full or too much air in a balloon and than free it, than we will see that the air in order to get out will exert a large amount of pressure at mouth of balloon, in a same way if we fill our stomach with too much air our throat will get tense

    How to u sing phrases with your mouth wide open?

    • @VocalLiberation
      @VocalLiberation  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You will have to close for a moment when you sing consonants, but then get your mouth open again as soon as you get back to the vowel.

    • @yousaf653

    The background noise is swallowing your voice sir. Really hard to clearly hear what you’re saying.

    • @VocalLiberation
      @VocalLiberation  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Sorry about that. The main point is when you get to the end of a line of music, just let your mouth hang open and let the belly muscles relax. As soon as you do this, air will automatically pull itself into the body, and then you're ready to sing the next phrase. Once you start singing the next line, the ab muscles will engage again.
