    I've watched probably a hundred videos on tongue position and this video definitely cleared up some problems I had. A lot of these popular singing lessons tend to just say the same thing over and over, but you actually went in depth and even debunked some things that I was taught improperly. Can't thank you enough 🙏

    Nice explanation! I really have trouble with my pitch range and the larynx tension. I have also put up 2 videos with me singing. I'd be really grateful if you can suggest me where I need the most improvement! Thank you in advance :)

    5:40 it is not touching the teeth but it is low right? that is what I noticed, the biggest improvement in tension relief I ever had was when I first noticed my tongue was pretty much blocking my singing and tried to keep it down, or out of the way

    Tongue tension in the back of my throat. Need exercises to help with this. Proper breath support as well. I've tried apoggio breathing but I'm not sure if I'm engaging correctly

    I have an issue sometimes with my tongue flattening or falling back in the throat, especially on ah vowels. Would me letting the sides of the tongue ride along my bottom molars and not drop below help keep the middle of the tongue more upright and in a better position for forward resonance?

      @VocalLiberation 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +David Woods If you have issues with your tongue falling back in your mouth, check out my other video on tongue/throat tension. The exercise there will help you. In particular, pay attention to the SOUND. You have to get used to hearing this bright, clear sound. Once your mind gets used to that sound, the tongue will begin to behave more as it should.

    5:34 Isn't this just yelling? Your neck is tense and the sound in general is strained. I had thought you were demonstrating the incorrect version? Do you have to make the tone darker to prevent the larynx from rising - is that what you were doing? Please help me.

      Are you referring to Pagliaccio? If so, which aria specifically? Vesti la giubba? No, Pagliaccio non son?
      That IS something I can help you with, but it would have to be in a one-on-one lesson. If you plan to take a lesson, send me an email with more details. www.vocalliberation.com/contact

    May I ask where you where trained? Did you study the voice?
    Also I find that unless I tuck my tongue behind my bottom teeth, scales on A or Ahh I get real tension. Is this more bad support rather than tongue? I really do feel my tongue diminishes my ability to open the throat and causes most of my breaks.

    • @VocalLiberation
      @VocalLiberation 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Bandstanding Mcgee I studied everywhere, haha. I picked up a lot of what I know from opera singers, but I have also trained in SLS too (that was my formative training). I've worked with 5 different teachers, and have consulted with many more singers (professional singers) for advice. I have worked with various programs out there like Singing Success, Raise Your Voice, and others I can't think of off the top of my head. I also have done a TON of self experimentation. Basically, anything I say comes from first hand experience. Even if a teacher taught me something, I wouldn't accept or deny it until I had a chance to test it myself. And I even tested the things they told me never to do.
      I also have a degree in speech pathology.
      You can learn more here. If there is something else I left out, feel free to ask, as I know I have a bit of a unique background story: www.vocalliberation.com/about
      As for your tongue, I'm actually working on a video for that as we speak, so stay tuned! (It should be up before the weekend is over.)

    I was told to keep the tongue tension free

    • @VocalLiberation
      @VocalLiberation 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The tongue has to engage to articulate the vowels. What should not be done, though, is depressing the tongue down on the larynx. (Think like a kermit the frog sound. Christina Aguilera does this a lot too.) What needs to be relaxed is your throat. The tongue needs to be free to move around in the mouth to articulate the vowels, though. It shouldn't feel tense, per se, but you can feel it moving.

    Interesting, but I think most of this happens sub-consciously, i.e. without thinking about it while doing it.

    • @VocalLiberation
      @VocalLiberation 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Herbert Smith Yes, a large portion of this is indeed subconscious. The primary way we have control over this is via how we envision the vowel sound in our mind -- thinking of this color instead of another color. Once we have that vision for the sound in our mind, the rest of the body begins to respond. This is why I mentioned thinking of just singing the vowel clearly more than anything else, and then letting the tongue assume whatever position it needs for that to occur.

      Check out the article on my site I linked to in the description. You will see examples of at least 6-7 different singers who DO NOT do this. There are countless more.
