  • Played on native hardware with 128mb of ram to keep the map stable. My shit capture card gave me 100ms++ of lag, so the gameplay is a bit rough. Part 1 coming when I feel like running naked through a warehouse of annoying enemies.
    0:00 - Force Phillip Masse to log onto his computer and launch the Pickett Gap program.
    3:22 - Sabotage the Surface-to-Air Missile emplacements protecting Severonickel.
    7:04 - Deactivate Severonickel's Main Server to stop the Pickett Gap logic bomb.
    11:13 - Rendezvous with the Osprey for extraction.
    Special thanks to cazzhmir for setting this all up! And shoutout to Jake "Ziggity" Steven and Alex37 for the background on this mission. Checkout their channels for more.

    This is awesome man! It's really great to know that it is possible to play those maps properly on Xbox with 128mb of RAM. I couldn't really test that because all I have is the original Xbox (with 64mb) and modded X360, where those missions would crash the game pretty often, not to mention that it was impossible to load the first parts of Severonickel and NPP on original hardware.
    Oh by the way, thanks for that shoutout :)

      Yep, you NEED 128mb, and even the 128mb emulation files for the 360 don't cut it. Tried that too before this...

    What a shame that Alekseevich has no bigger role in this shortened version of Severonickel, we don't get any of his dialogue and I always imagined his suicide to be a bit more melodramatic.
    Anyways, it's absolutely wild to be able to see how the mission played out now.
    Phillip Masse is so much better here than in Kola Cell.

    Seeing how close to finished this level actually was just makes it more sad that we didn't get it in the final game. Do you plan on playing through Nuclear Power Plant too?

    • @andrewa837
      @andrewa837  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Eventually I will play through all the parts. It's annoying, though, since every death / fuckup I need to completely reboot and reload.
      There HAS to be a newer build too, cause the Severonickel footage from e3 doesn't have the snow textures messed up like this.

      I don't think the footage you're referring to is a newer build, I can tell thanks to the differences in the game's HUD layout which was from earlier builds of the game. If I had to guess, something to do with the textures or rendering must have broke close to this build being compiled or something along those lines.

      @@andrewa837 I know what you mean, but I don't think there's a newer build. I think what's going on here is that Severonickel wasn't even meant to be played in this build; it was simply a holdover from a previous build. That previous build probably had certain lighting/engine properties that were tweaked or updated in this build that leaked, meaning some effects got "lost in translation" so to speak. Probably the same reason why the physics on the ceiling lights are so wacky, despite said lights also appearing totally normal in the E3 build. That, and the snow texture, probably appeared totally fine on previous builds. This build simply presents a game engine that was already moving on without Severonickel entirely.

    God oh man oh god, I hope to hell these become simpler to run over time -- either through (somehow, magic maybe? idk) porting them to PC or once Xbox emulating gets better. I'd like to play through as close to a complete, originally-intended version of SC1 since I'm SO starved for classic SC gameplay.
    Before this build leaked, I had literally scoured the wiki, leaked files, and other stuff people knew about the cut levels and ran through Kola Cell to come up with a Headcanon way of playing something as close to this as possible but having this in such close reach yet not very optimized or playable at all for most (and even you still had issues) is SO much better.

    • @andrewa837
      @andrewa837  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It's never as cool as the snippets in the reviews, haha. But I love this version of Masse way more than Kola for the voiceovers alone. This level was so close to being finished.
      So what was supposed to be the plot in this act? As NPP in PS2 leads quite well to Chinese Embassy (using nuclear material), does NPP in this version just lead to more relay hunting?

    • @cazzhmir
      @cazzhmir 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@andrewa837 The original ordering was Kalinatek, Shipyard (which ended up becoming the Vselka missions), Nuclear Power Plant, Mining Town, Severonickel, then Chinese Embassy.
      Ivan's encryption key would've led to the signal coming from the Vselka's servers. Bobrov the captive sailor was still a character in the original Shipyard. When Sam tapped into the sub's servers, it would've revealed a video signal of the captured American troops, introducing that whole plotline.
      Tapping into the Vselka would've also revealed the whole microwave relay, leading to NPP. That mission would've played out identically, but instead with Fisher and Wilkes meeting by the disposal train and going to the town of Simargl (Mining Town).
      Mining Town would've had you looking for a theoretically massive antenna, judging by how the town "swallows microwaves" as Grim said. It also had you weeding out Georgian mercenaries hiding amongst a civilian population. The big reveal with Mining Town was that the town's entire mine was lined with the antenna wire, creating the sheer size and strength of the signal that Third Echelon detected. From Mining Town, Grim would've found Philip Masse's network at Severonickel.
      Severonickel's plot really never changed throughout development, aside from the entire level being shortened from 4 sections at first, to 3 for a while, and then the 2 that can be played in this build. To say it was overthought and overdesigned might be an understatement.
      Shipyard and Mining Town were the early cuts, being shelved sometime between summer 2001 (when the level designing started) and May 2002. There are really no known specifics beyond that, aside from the fact that they were cut by E3 2002, with Ubisoft saying at that point that the game had 12 levels, not 14. The plot gap was covered accordingly, with Kalinatek leading to NPP, then leading to Severonickel, and then Chinese Embassy.
      NPP and Severonickel were then obviously cut right around the time this build was compiled, which would've been late-August early-September 2002.

    • @vanilla3464
      @vanilla3464 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Those late cuts are really tragic... If you really have context, the jump from Kalanatek to Chinese Embassy can be a bit jarring. The decision to cut down Severonickel into what became Kola Cell was a bit of a mistake in my opinion too, they went too far with the scaling back when only several things really needed to be revised. I also wish Nuclear Power Plant was included as a DLC level for Xbox/PC too but that's likely a casualty of the exclusivity of that level for the PS2 version.

    Sorry a question I had regarding the beginning of this part, are the weapons there by default when it loads or did you spawn them in?

      They get spawned in by the dpad. You can spawn any item, gun and pistol are what was in the iso.
      In sn1 you have nothing and can't spawn anything in. In npp you have full kit.

      @@andrewa837 As it was planned there were 4 Russian missions: 1) Shipyard; 2) Mining town; 3) Nuclear power plant; 4) Severonickel. Now, Shipyard is present and named as Vselka infiltration and Vselka submarine. Mining town has never been released, or the material has been lost. Nuclear power plant has been provided for PS2; and Severonickel is what you have been playing. At least 3 missions of the early Splinter cell release are present. If it was possible to reunite them, the Russian chapter would be almost complete. So, Fisher operates in Kola Peninsula after Kalinatek and then in Myanmar. I dont understand the reason Ubisoft didin't propose them as DLC, the chapter was almost complete.
