I really don't get the whole: mind your values, ignore the color thing. Yes, shadows are important and yes, highlights are important, but I've seen them driven to extreme, where the subjects in their painting were looking like from plasticine. Colour can be used to create shadow and hence learning about the colour and what it can do is invaluable. Just saying: value refers only to black and white drawings, because guess what - you are practically working with one colour - black, and its hues and saturation. Screaming all the time about values and not how colour can actually represent the values in the painting is so common. And then we have oversaturated, overcontrasted plasticine paintings. IF you grayscale many of the masters' paintings they will be within the same value. How odd... Oh yes, it's sometimes more about the contrast and the colour depth than only its value on the hue and saturation scale. :/
You are not only extremely talented and masterful at watercolors, but you are also so, so sweet, kind, and generous in sharing your gifts. Truly inspiring!
I concur. Your voice is very soothing and your instruction is "spot on". I have learned a lot from watching your videos, especially about layering slowly.
You're a GREAT artist and super teacher! Your sweet, gentle voice makes you extremely easy to listen to. Last but not least by any means - you're a sweetheart for sharing! Thank you!
I just love your painting tutorials Anna. You are very skilled and just watching you lay the colour down mesmerises me, I could watch you paint all day I think. To have you pass on your wisdom while you are painting is wonderful to someone like myself who is self taught and trying to develop my skills. Thank you so much.
Beautiful painting and excellent tips. I agree 100% cotton paper is crucial! Artist grade paints are number 2 in importance. When I switched to these professional supplies the success of my paintings increased immensely.
These are really good tips for beginners. Especially how important values are. You can go wrong with color but if your values are correct your painting will still look good. Beautiful composition as always ☺️ waiting for the background one! 😄
Your advice is pretty good for beginners. Specially the advice that colors are not important but the values are. Whats amusing is that once we come to intermediate levels and want to improve further colors again become important. What colors you use hugely impact the final product. This is because colors they play with each other and behave in a group. Great masters understand this very well and use it. We mere mortals can't do that so we must focus on values.
Beautiful painting. I find it very helpful to take a photo of my painting in progress and view it in black and white my mistakes are always obvious. Great video thank you Anna.
Excellent illustration of your point with the branch, and the fact that the colors are unexpected (although complimentary to the bird), makes the picture all the better.
This is the first time I've seen one of your videos, and now I feel as though I can learn to use watercolor effectively. You break down the steps needed beautifully, and it all makes sense! Thank you!!
Helpful *and* inspiring. Thank you, Anna, for the clarity of your thoughts, your ability to explain important concepts and, most especially, for your generosity and willingness to share. Light bulbs turn on in my head when I listen to and watch you paint, lol!
Wonderful lesson! I was so surprised when you showed the painting in monotone. Beautiful painting....one of my favorites 💗 Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge, You are a great teacher.
It's so gorgeous 🥺 your work is breathtaking! I'm very thankful for your advice about cotton paper because I've been practicing shading on a cheap watercolour journal (which I highly doubt has any percentage of cotton) I couldn't shade a single sphere without serious struggle and it would turn out very patchy even with the correct values
You possess the god gifted efficiency...the magical touch by your fingertips does the miracle on the papers.keep it up ma'am . becoming addicted to your works day by day .
I found these tips highly important in the general sense of an artist. I am just getting back into art, after years of neglecting my natural born talent and urge to do artsy things. I have been lost in videos on where to focus relearning and new learning. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ Thank you so much for this video, it opened my eyes to needing to relearn sketch values, paint values, different types of paint/media values!, focal point with respect to the direction of light in an image, and knowing my tools before i choose them with the, “well….this will do” attitude (maybe so but their could be a better option right in front of me). Your video was divinely sent ✨🕊️🥰Thanks again, truly inspiring! 10:10
What a wonderful painting...and yes, to work with a good paper is very important, but it has not to be very expensiv. I work with "Centenaire " , which is a product from GERSTAECKER , Germany , which I can recommend very much.
Beautiful work, excellent tips. Your audio content like your painting work is crisp, clean and direct which makes your content inviting and informative. I would only add a beginner mistake that is very common is not having a good plan before starting a painting. It may mean having an excellent line sketch done first, like you use here, or it may mean just having a clear idea of what you want to paint and what your steps will be. Also….not waiting long enough for the paper to truly dry before adding the next glaze. The freshness gets lost when the layers of glazes wash each other out. Thank you for this very inspiring video!
Your paintings are very beautiful thank you for the this video. Most important take away for me was "focus on the values and not colour." Please make a video on how you stretch your paper. Despite 4-7 layers not even a slight buckle. 😅
i'm starting over with my art journey, this mentality can help me a lot!! Specially with values, this the one i need to focus a lot, during my journey before, i tend to focus with satisfying the people around me with my art and not the art itself. Time to change that 😌😌
Very useful tips Anna. As a beginner, I think looking at the photo or painting in monotone is really helpful to understanding values. Thank you and it’s a beautiful painting.
These are very appropriate tips, especially for beginners, as I am. My eyes were opened when you showed the scale values, so amazing to see, quite well, the definition of the petals. I ALWAYS learn so much from you, thank you very much for all the time and tips you give us. 🙏🏼❤️
This is a wonderful lesson I wish I had had you as a teacher when I started years ago and even today I find your lessons and demonstrations a great refresher and many new tricks and understandings.
Your compositions are so beautiful and inspiring. You're so right about the colours - your colour choices have a vibrancy that is often better than the real thing.
So interesting. I haven't really thought of value so deeply. I like the idea of taking a painting and editing it to black/white to see the values without color. Thank you!
Thank you so much. These are great tips. I especially appreciate the comment about the cotton content of the paper. I've been frustrated with my work because of this issue. Great help.
Videos like this make me wish even more that I could find/afford a real class. I've been trying on my own (on and off, admittedly) since 2016, and the tutorials I've found have definitely helped...but what I really miss is having someone there to see what I'M doing and be like "Oh, you just need to [insert correction here]." It's the one real thing I feel has kept me stuck, because no matter how many videos I watch and how much I practice, I feel like I'm coming up against the same wall. I'll definitely never be able to do anything with this level of sophistication!
Thank you for sharing your tips. I find myself being impatient and not just wanting to do so many layers or take the time to learn how watercolors work together best. I appreciate you encouraging us to get a few pieces of good paper just to see what it's like. I would love to hear more of your story. Perhaps you've already shared this in another video and I missed it. Thank you for sharing your talent with the rest of us. Blessings.
Thank you...now I know what I need to do...invest in cotton papers...I am a beginner in watercolor and have had a few successful results but I have had lots of failures and now I know why. Thank you for sharing this information 🙏
Absolutely stunning! I would paint all day if I could paint like you. I have always thought watercolor is the most difficult medium. You make it look simple. ❤ SayessDesign
This was super useful for me as I am trying to switch between mediums, acrylic and water colour and just understanding the difference of light before dark for water and dark with light highlights in acrylic, is a huge step forward in fundamentals. Thank you and you have easy to unfollow through videos. 😊
I dabbled in acrylics before going all in on watercolor - I definitely understand this shift in thinking (and by extension) planning your layers you are describing 😊💕 thank you!
There is a saying: "Value does all the work and color gets all the credit!" So true!
Wow , WoW, Very Great and Wonderful Drawing, Thanks for Sharing. 🙏 🙏🙏🙏💞💞💞💯💯💯
As a quilter, I use light medium and dark to make the design work. Thank you for your insight in applying it to painting.
These are really good tips for beginners. Especially how important values are. You can go wrong with color but if your values are correct your painting will still look good. Beautiful composition as always ☺️ waiting for the background one! 😄

@@AnnaBucciarelli Thank you Anna! Happy Easter! Христос Воскрес 😄
Excellent example of the difference between tone and color. Very important to always keep in mind!
You could explain how to surface a road and I would still listen! Great content, lovely voice, you are a born teacher as well as a fine artist.
Your advice is pretty good for beginners. Specially the advice that colors are not important but the values are.

This is stunning. You make painting those roses look so simple. When I saw the reference, I realized I wouldn’t know where to start. Loved this.

I love the “spent flower” you added bottom left corner, a beautiful composition!❤
Thank you so much Sherri! In retrospect this was probably one of my fav studies from 2023 😊
Thanks for the pointers. The picture is amazing, btw!
