  • This is a VERY thorough diagnostic video detailing the process of elimination required to determine the cause of a very puzzling problem, but in a very logical way.

Nice work. I'm a tech too, and anticipated your every move. You're the real deal, and not a poser or a hardware seller like so many youtube "techs" are.
I did catch a goof, at 13:35, you forgot to plug in the monitor after you reseated the video card the first time. In the end it didn't matter, and you did have the monitor plugged in the spare video card.
It sure is nice to chase a ghost like this and then uncover the obvious defect like this. It's not always this easy, and you got my respect when you used all of the customer's other parts to fire up the new motherboard. That's how it's done by a pro. We even have the same cranky attitude regarding crummy cases and people asking for advice and ignoring it.
Again, that's some top quality troubleshooting and professional evaluation. Kudos.

It is objectively a poor choice of case, and I can deduce this because of the many errors made with it. If he didn't want to service this case, he didn't have to.

CareyHolzman Great video as usual. Proved to be extremely helpful to me two days ago. My brother bought a PC from a PC builder company and when it arrived, it would turn on but no video would output to a monitor. Since I'm a fan of your videos and am comfortable handling computer parts, I followed a similar approach to yours and found that one stick of RAM was not seated correctly and a simple reseating fixed the issue. Thanks Carey! It saved a potential big time waste sending things back and money having to pay for shipping between the company to get it checked.

Great video Carey. I had a similar diagnostic issue with my own personal system. One morning the system was dead when I turned it on. I installed a new PS and it was good. Then a couple of weeks later, the same thing. I thought is must have been another bad PS. Installed another PS but this time nothing charged. Then I started eliminating different parts, like the memory, then the processor, and finally found it was the MB. This took me a couple of weeks because it was an old system and I had to find parts on ebay to try. A P4 processor cost me $7. To top it off, the first MB I bought on ebay, a used one, was also defective. It would not post. I emailed the seller and he agreed the MB was DOA and sent me another. Finally, after two weeks of trying multiple parts, my system was once again booting and running. Lessons were learned along the way though. At least I didn't have to contend with a lousy case :-)

This was a brilliant demonstration of your skills as computer technician as well as a teacher with entertaining qualities. Even though the video was quite long I wasn’t bored a second. Your voice and the way you talk reminds me of Johnny Cash or Elvis. Pleasant to listen to. Much respect of your work ethics and the fact that you don’t let such a customer hang in the wind. Chapeau. I am impressed. Keep on with the good work. Greetings from Germany.

Enjoyable and informative video! Gotta say the ASUS 1366 mobo I bought for my current computer (now 5yr old) came with two small gouges in the CPU socket. I noticed them as soon as the socket cover was lifted. In my late fifties at the time my eyes weren't and aren't the best for small details, but a magnifying glass confirmed the damage. Contacted NewEgg, who originally told me to send the board back, and to expect its replacement in circa three weeks. I explained that I had ordered the entire build from them (easily verified on their end) and that a three-week-plus wait would make it difficult to diagnose any other potential issues before the month grace period expired. They were kind enough (?) to cross ship. I had the replacement board two days later.

you're one of only a couple of all these commenters to refer to the actual motherboard damage and offer an answer to bent pins on intel sockets..im a pc builder myself and ive been given about 3 x 1155 motherboards and an 1150 board with pin damage far worse than 1 or 2 bent..i had 15 bent pins on 1 board alone..an asus itx..i straightened them all-even the few that were flattened on the socket plastic and were crushed into angled steps..and the board boots fine now..it did take me several hours (with sewing needles and watch repair eyeglass) and carey hasnt got the time for that nonsense..time's money..i then went on to repair one of the other 1155 boards..with even more bent pins-1 pin out of the bunch did snap off unfortunately-but the board still boots and works everyday (socket 1154 now haha) after that my friend took the remaining boards and had the patience and skill to repair them more accurately..he's a master..a total pc fanatic..the guy who donates me them buys cheaply from ebay and has little idea how to set an intel lga processor in its socket the correct orientation without trial and error..i expect more boards in due course...specs

I'm addicted to this content. I read a book with similar content, and I'm absolutely hooked on it. "Reclaiming Connection: The Journey of a Digital Detox" by Joshua Ember

Shorts in USB ports can really be detrimental to the function of the system, and I can attest to that. Once, when I visited my older brother and his friends in college, they had an Xbox 360 that suddenly refused to turn on, and happened to have a flash drive in it. The 360 made a noise when the power button was pressed, but it didn't actually do anything more. I can't really explain why, maybe it was a short in the flash drive (because the port looked fine) but it turned on when I removed the flash drive. Another time, in my own Xbox 360, the plastic bit inside came off without my knowledge, so when I plugged in my flash drive, the metal case shorted the exposed pins, so it did the same as the last one. I remembered the problem with the last one, removed the flash drive, and sure enough it worked fine then.

Great video. That case looks like a nightmare to work with. Been look into a new build for my folks so trying to look at all computer stuff related with cases involved. Worst case I have dealt with is a RAIDMAX Dirk-Tooth by Smilodon. Think I got that name right.
