It warms my heart to see a guy in his kitchen running a business and making use of his knowledge and skill. And helping others in the process. Nice video, well explained and demonstrated.
This is my number 1 favorite all time video on this channel. Carey explains step by step how to upgrade to an SSD drive which can save you hundreds. I just went down to my local computer repair shop and received a quote of $325.00 parts and labor to upgrade to a basic 128 gig SSD. This one procedure I can use for myself and anyone else in my family that could really utilize this service. Super impressed.
Just found this. You are a very good teacher. No short-cuts, no glossing over any errors - perfect . I will have a shot at this. Thank you from Byron Bay Australia. Agree with the below comment. Entertaining.
I enjoyed watching your video. Even though I am quite knowledgeable with building PC's, I was intrigued by your video title because just last week I upgraded a laptop a friend gave me that he wasn't using and hadn't used in years. The "Trashed" laptop was an old HP G6-series (17" HD Screen) with an A6 cpu, that he claimed was too slow for him. I took it home, cleaned it up, replaced the HD with a San disk 250 GB SSD ($70 @ best buy), replaced the battery ($13 on Ebay), upgraded to Win 10 and upped the memory with an additional 4 GB of RAM. This made it speedy enough for me but I did this to give as a surprise gift for my mother-in-law, who was still using a cheap laptop she had for almost 10 years (she couldn't afford to replace it). Hers ran like a snail compared to my buddy's old laptop BEFORE my upgrades! Your customers may not want to spend the kind of money (pro tech repairs) it takes to do what I did, but for us knowledgeable people it can be quite worthwhile to do, for how little it will cost us to pay for the parts alone!
Hey Carey I love watching your older videos - very clear and informative - My daughter had an old laptop that she was going to throw out and I did the same upgrade as you did here - we keep it as a spare upstairs just forbrowsing, watching videos and office stuff. Keep up the fantastic work and keep on rockin' Woodsie London, UK
Thanks a ton Carey! TH-cam should have the possibility to give a thousand like for this video. Your video taught me how to optimize my old Lenovo Y510P laptop performance. My laptop was a nightmare since I updated it into Win 10. I was thinking to spend about 1000- 1500 Euros to get a new one. I followed what you said all the way to the end and all worked (other than a bit of change because of Acronis True Image). So, with below 200 euros (110 Euros for Samsung hard disk, 25 Euros for Acronis software, 10 Euros for Sabrent cable and 40 Euros for 8 GB Ram Kingston), I hope it works for another 2-3 years. I can't thank you enough Carey! One thing that took me about 6 hours was that Acronis True Image was not functioning as good as 2 years ago. There are lots of negative feedback regarding bad user experience on Amazon for version 2020. So I decided to buy 2019 version. The one I bought was also defective. I followed as you instructed here but unfortunately the .ISO file from their website was not functioning. I couldn't use the DVD as it couldn't be read by my laptop. I'm going to return the Acronis back to the vender. The solution that turn out to be working for me was that Sabrent cable comes with support of Acronis - on the box for Sabrent hard disk cable is written that Acronis True Image for Sabrent software is inclusive when one purchase this cable. In Sabrent website www.sabrent.com/downloads/ we can download it. At the time of using the software the Sabrent hard drive cable must be plugged into the laptop. The cloning can be run under Windows OS (I tried it on my Win 10). It took me about 1 hour to do the cloning job without need to wrestle with changing boot device under CMOS setting, etc.
I think you did a fabulous job of showing how to replace a harddrive and memory in a laptop. The detail you covered in this video was very professional and well done. Anyone wishing up get more speed out of their old machine would easily be able to follow your directions albeit this is now 2 yrs old. Your video was very clear and your speaking was very clear and you always looked at the camera when speaking. Well done and thank you.
upgrading ram an hard drive is different in every laptop as far as being easy to difficult...meaning removing the back cover as well as upgrading said hardware, which could be more difficult if you have to do additional step like removing the motherboard due to harddrive/ram being under the motherboard.
Had to find my way back here just to comment by saying thank you and tell you this was by far the best upgrade/repair video I have ever watched thank you
Very good explanations. Not too fast or too slow. Just easy to follow. Your not selling anything, just trying to help your average Joe. Thanks for posting.
When I brought my Acer Predator Helios 300 laptop at the end of 2018, I was blown away at how fast Windows 10 boots with a 256GB m.2 soild state drive. I finally see why SSD's are becoming the new standard. Thanks to you Carey, I will be reviewing my laptop some time soon. It's also amazing that your channel grew 100k subs in 5 years. Keep up the good work Carey :-)
AMAZING instructional video. I just purchased a new HP laptop, with an SSD and i7 more other stuff too, but really because I wanted an HD screen, to replace my 6+ year old molasses i5 dell (which I can only use plugged in). This reminds me of years ago when I would work on my own machine. You have reinvigorated me to working on my dell to bring it back to life again. Thank you soo very much. I haven't enjoyed watching a computer repair-type video in quite some time. Also -- like you filming location, makes one feel 'right at home'!!!!! Again thanks so much.
Hi Carey, I just wanted to say thank you for this video. I just finished upgrading my Alienware 18 with a Samsung EVO SSD 500GB and an additional 16 GB of RAM. I watched your video no less than 4 times before I attempted the upgrade. I followed your procedure and it went flawlessly. The only difference was with Acronis 2020 and Rufus. But it wasn't anything that I couldn't figure out. My Alienware has new life and, dare I say, is running faster than the day I got it.
Thanks for this. I switched to Mac in 2010, this was really helpful in letting me know which utilities work best for PC these days. I’m working on my mother-in-law’s ancient laptop on this cloudy Saturday afternoon. 😬
The reason it wouldn't boot of the other USB socket might be because it was USB 3.0 (it's clearly blue as opposed to the other one) and some of the earlier devices with a USB 3.0 port need a driver to enable it which isn't loaded until the OS boots. So with older devices you might need to boot off a USB 2 port. These videos are excellent. This is exactly all the same stuff that I do/use (for my own kit) and I'm also picking up some tips a long the way on a tool/tip or two that I didn't know about. Nice that that laptop has all the upgradeable stuff behind just 3 screws. I wish all laptops were like this.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge with the world, I have followed this upgrade to the letter and I am very pleased with the results, I have 23 years of IT Engineering behind me but there were a couple of utils that you used that I had not come across so I am grateful to you for pointing them out to us, watch about 4 of your videos now and found your explanation of this and any procedure to be very slow and methodical, thank you, regards TJK UK.
I've done this procedure a thousand times myself... but it's always nice to see another professional run his steps and see/hear what sort of things he looks for. Very educational! Thank you! 👍👍
I was just checking some instruction videos on replacing backlit keyboards and somehow got stuck in watching some cool dude laying out concisely and ever so laid back how to upgrade your laptop. Something I have done over a dozen times in the past, including the image build for the SSD, and all I remember from those times, is heartburn and foaming mouth syndrome because I felt there was always something up with some unintended consequence I either overlooked or the manufacturer had dressed up more than it should have. How the hell do you stay so cool and collected?! Loved every minute of it, even though I could spell out every step ahead of time, glued to the screen due to your detached yet connected (you know?!) and in control manner in which you took us along for that ride. Subscribed!
This worked SO WELL! By putting Acrosis on a flash drive it takes all the risk out of creating an SSD clone. I've shut my laptop down the last few times just to watch it boot up! It is so fast, like I bought a NEW computer. I have a LARGE 3D program that used to take forever to load, now it's fast too!
The bootable flash drive is the best kept secret because it allows you to upgrade to as many SSD'S as you want for no additional cost. Most people use Acronis once because they run the .exe file and never realize that if they would have created the Rufus bootable flash drive, they would retain multiple applications.
Love those step by step instructions videos. Nothing is skipped or given for granted, perfectly clear explanations that anyone can understand. Thanks for putting these videos up Carey.
I upgraded my dell vostro i3-2350 laptop with 8gb ram and ssd . remove cd drive and replace normal HDD with caddy to cd rom space . its just amazing !!!! i can handle 1Gb photoshop psd file very easy and my old 2nd gen laptop works super fast. its just amazing. Thank you for your tutorial .
Love your video. Well-explained. Most important and the most pleasant fact is that it contains no unwanted, irritating, high-volume background music as can be seen in 90% of the videos created by senselss new-gen video-makers. Thank God. Thank you so much for your excellent video explaining almost all important facts in a lucid manner. Expecting more such videos from you.
13:15 The real clock rate of frequency of ram is 1/2 of the rated frequency is because RAM these days processes 2 pieces of data per cycle. The word DDR stands for double data rate make sense in this case.
That is for data transfer rate, this is Dual channel, so if the ram is rated for 1600mhz Dual channel, then single channel would be half that, in this case 800mhz.
@@dongiddens7438 No. What Justin Leong said was correct. Dual channels mean chipset of the motherboard provides two dedicated high-throughput data channels. The channels permit reading from and writing to memory to occur on distinct channels and have nothing to do with the speed of the RAM.

I have seen some anomalies with the Kingston upgrade checker, I use an old Lenovo X220 for some hobby stuff, I bought it as a cheap ex corporate machine, upgraded it the day I bought it to 16GB and SSD, it is a modest i5 CPU but more than adequate for the purpose (Win 10 pro). I believe due to the cost of memory when the machine was made it was never certificated for 16GB, just 8GB. It is solid and reliable with 16GB but not listed as possible on Kingston website. It is obviously up to the individual to do their due diligence. Many of these old laptops are very useable for stuff rather than being thrown away, for instance if you are into digital photography it is handy to have an inexpensive laptop to take on holiday, no need to have a brand new flagship machine just to quickly save and review pictures. The removed conventional hard drives are fine to be put in caddies. Great advice as always, Acronis may have saved me a lot of work!
Great video. Been doing this for years and do it the same way. I know there are free programs to use, but Acronis has 1) Never failed me and 2) The installed version (if bought by customer) allows them to have some piece of mind that comes with an auto-sync backup and recovery option.
Carey, I watched your videos for several years, several years ago. Much of what I know, I've learned from you. In this particularl presentation I anticipated just about every step. And yet, I don't know *one other IT professional (and I know a few; that's how I too make a living) who can explain what they're doing, what needs to be done, as precisely and as eloquently as you. You should probably have mentioned that you were using the UEFI version of Acronis. That's not self-evident and perhaps needs to be explained. Still, great presentation. Thank you. I agree with Tim W. Thank you for your generosity. These videos are not just commercials. If they are, I certainly hope they work for you. But they're also just sharing and giving and spreading the word. Thank you for that. AJ
It may be a good idea to place a large piece of white lint free material on your working area so that if you did drop a small screw it would not bounce and roll away to some mysterious hiding place.
Hello Carey, you sir have excellent teaching skills. I don’t think I’ll ever be at your skill level, however you’ve given me confidence to tackle some upgrades & some troubleshooting. Thank You, Sir. Your knowledge and confidence is something you should be proud of.
I installed a hybrid HD for my desktop thats 10 yrs old and what an improvement. SSD are still kind of expensive but I have a 120gb SSD on my intel i5 desktop and its fast.
Carey, thanks for suggestions on diagnostic tools! I have repaired/upgraded my laptop (ASUS ROG G75), and now am working on wife's ASUS laptop using your suggested diag tools! Thanks!!
Great video. I have been a fan of Acronis for years. It is the only backup method I trust. My laptop is a Lenovo G50-45 which has an AMD A6 (yea, I know what you said in the video). I recently increased my RAM from 4GB to 16GB, and your video inspired me to order a SSD to replace the existing HDD. I expect it to be delivered later today. I hope to get a big increase in speed. Thanks for the links to the utilities......
hi Carey i know you a fan of adata ssd drives and acronis true image did you know if you register with a data your ssd they give you the option of a FREE acronis drive image key
A very informative video, well explained and WITHOUT the mistake many IT-people are making of going too fast through the various stages! MY COMPLIMENTS!!
I thought this video would be the same as a few that I've seen before on TH-cam....but I was very glad I watched this one!.....I enjoyed it very much! Thanks for that.
thanks a million Carey ! been putting off 'ssd swop' for ages, for fear of failure, ha. Your detailed tutorship has given me the confidence. Your the man ! cheers
Thank you so very much for an excellent video. My hard disk read/write speeds went from in the 80's to the 500's and 400's. I had some issues with getting the bios to boot to the flash drive and at one point it would not even come up at all. Finally it somehow cleared itself up and all was fine. All in all, it all worked itself out and again I am very thankful to you again for a great video.
Saved my a__ I watched this video. installed crystaldiskmark. laptop was going bad. backed up files followed your instructions . You are a great thanks
Excellent video, thank you so much. Nice and slow, comprehensive plus the great links as well. I have almost identical Lenovo laptop, just a few months older. About to do same upgrade with Samsung EVO SSD. Excited to try the upgrade with the aid of your video.
This man is not lying. My mom has an old HP Pavilion DV6000, which had a mechanical hard drive. (It was my first laptop and then it got to my mom after I got a "better" one.) It even has only 2 gigs of ram, I think an Intel Core 2 Duo. I broke the keyboard (accidents with dropping it sometimes and its just the keys, the keyboard works fine the keys only fell off). But after we got the keyboard fixed, we both got surprised. It was a Sandisk (I don't remember the brand correctly but I think it was a Sandisk) And then it was so fast, it was with Windows 7 but then she upgrade to Windows 10 1909 (because she got annoyed of those "Upgrade to Windows 10 because Windows 7 is out of date" type of pop ups from Microsoft). It still isn't upgraded except for the SSD and it's faster than my laptop (which is a pretty cheap laptop ngl with twice as much ram, a bit of better graphics + a little better processor). Whenever quarantine ends and I get enough money, I'll upgrade to a 512GB SSD. I have a 500GB HDD so, it is the same size (i don't think its a big differece 500 from 512) and hopefully, from 4GB of ram to 8GB. I hope that will be enough for Windows and my laptop is general to perform a bit snappier. I don't really like Linux since I'm used to Windows and hell no to a Hackintosh, because my laptop isn't compatible.
Carey, you're amazing very good instructor. Clear step by step presentation and clear like a TV announcer. Like what you've suggested I ordered a Samsung SSD 250gb and a caddy for my current 1TB mechanical HD to be relocated on the optical bay. The only different was I downloaded a Free OAMEI backupper standard instead of buying Acronis. There would be a slightly difference in procedure in creating bootable disc and everything you have shown. Following the step by step procedure is easy but I might miss some options to check mark. Would you be able to add the same but instead of Acronis use Aomei backupper. The most complying reasons to use the later is it's free and most often than not it will be use once by most. The Acronis 2018 which cost you $30 is now $35 at Amazon for one laptop while the AOMEI free, no users limit.
*THANK YOU!* - 3rd attempt to clone via Acronis, latest new suggestion is to use 'Rescue Media Builder' - but their page then just states 'Clone', without saying from which source - I was guessing not the USB, but it's great to have someone who knows actually confirm it! - I've spent so long troubleshooting, I really can't afford to lose any more sanity 😂
Thanks professor CareyHolzman ! Great teaching tutorial on upgraded one's Laptop with a Samsung SSD , plus how to diagnose & install 8GB RAM memory ! This video is excellent in learning how to extend the life of a Laptop , while at the same time multiplying the performance levels up towards >> 2018/2019 standards !!! Scarboro
wow! what a good video. learned a lot. I worked on towers the early days but havent opened one up in a while, thinking that laptops were more of a black box. thanks for instilling the confidence to work on laptops.
I enjoyed the video - I have been delaying changing to a SSD drive because of concerns over loss of my software. It appears very do-able and I'll be buying a drive and will be watching this as a guide for the upgrade. Thanks.
Absolutely a well thought out and executed process. Just like all your other videos. Now if I can just find a replacement battery for my Yoga 910-131KB laptop that actually works properly. Thanks for your wisdom and guidance.
Lobster Johnson I have the same Thinkpad purchased in 2012 with an i7 in it and two Toshiba HDDs in Raid config. Got rid of the horrible Toshiba drives as even the warranty replacements failed. Put in the a Samsung 840 pro 500gb as boot drive and 1 TB WD black in the other bay for data...got rid of raid. Used Acronis to clone drive. I kept one of the Toshiba drives as a clone image of my boot. Good thing I did as my Samsung pro drive crashed and failed during a video con. Continued video con on cell phone while swapping the drives in the W530 to the Toshiba drive. Back up and running in 10 minutes...most of that in slow boot up time of the 7200 rpm Toshiba drive. Got Samsung drive replaced under warranty. The pro versions have 5yr warranty vs 3yr for non-pro versions. My W530 has 24 GB RAM - came with 16 GB. I used crucial memory.
I am self tought on upgrading laptops. although much of what you have spoken about, I already knew about. there are still some aspects of upgrading a computer i didn't know about. Thank you :)
Big thank you! Just moved on from HDD to new SSD and your steps made this a smooth and successful process!! I did not deviate from your method, again thank you!!

Love watching your videos because you are so thorough on your explanations about every single move.
Watching this video in January 2021. Still love these "older" videos. I keep coming back to them when I need some info. Keep up the good work, Carey!
Wow. Very well said and well done. Easy to understand. The best computer tech guru I have seen on TH-cam. Thanks Carey!
Great video. Been doing this for years and do it the same way. I know there are free programs to use, but Acronis has 1) Never failed me and 2) The installed version (if bought by customer) allows them to have some piece of mind that comes with an auto-sync backup and recovery option.
I found video very much useful and watched fully also, learned a lot. Thanks you Sir
Thanks!!
Enjoy your videos, really well clearly spoken and at times some humour, thank you and please keep making your quality videos
How did the upgrade to SSD go,is it faster?
hi Carey i know you a fan of adata ssd drives and acronis true image did you know if you register with a data your ssd they give you the option of a FREE acronis drive image key
A very informative video, well explained and WITHOUT the mistake many IT-people are making of going too fast through the various stages! MY COMPLIMENTS!!
always nice to see you help us Thanks .Watching Now in March 2022 cos we always need this
I thought this video would be the same as a few that I've seen before on TH-cam....but I was very glad I watched this one!.....I enjoyed it very much! Thanks for that.
Good explanation ! Well versed in the subject ! Very eloquent ! Great kitchen ! Overall rating 9.9 of 10 ! Thank you sir !
Just goes to show you can teach an old dog new tricks. Thanks for the lessons.Very easy to follow.Great tutorials.
thanks a million Carey ! been putting off 'ssd swop' for ages, for fear of failure, ha.
You are a great thanks
thank you Carey, just bought a dell latitude e6440 i7 going to put the ram up to 16 and a ssd, running win 10 pro, wish me luck
Update on your upgrade?
I wish you luck man
Excellent video, thank you so much. Nice and slow, comprehensive plus the great links as well. I have almost identical Lenovo laptop, just a few months older. About to do same upgrade with Samsung EVO SSD. Excited to try the upgrade with the aid of your video.
Excellent presentation. I will want to replace the battery in my HP Envy 17" laptop. Nice to have somewhere to go for instruction or advice.
Great training and instruction material thanks
I don't really like Linux since I'm used to Windows and hell no to a Hackintosh, because my laptop isn't compatible.
the most thorough instructions on the internet. this guy is awesome.
Another very informative video from Carey --- Thank You
Carey, you're amazing very good instructor.
I am continually amazed at how well you explain and answer questions that I have had for years...I very much appreciate what you do...
Thank you...
Hi, Carey, you show me how to do desktop my build Thank You, sir! I am glad you now teach Laptops!
I really like the way you clearly explain things. Thank you and well done.
Yes, superbly demonstrated. "Secure Boot" - don't I just love M$ and the BIOS manufacturers!
I don't know why but I really like his smile
haha
Scarboro
Thanks much for this video. It's a bit long but very detailed, so even an amateur can follow it.
Outstanding, thank you!
The speed is a plus for sure. But, getting the computer off those aging hard drives is a great thing too.. Makin' Copeeezzz
wow! what a good video. learned a lot. I worked on towers the early days but havent opened one up in a while, thinking that laptops were more of a black box. thanks for instilling the confidence to work on laptops.
I cannot thank you enough for these information given. Really appreciate.
wow! someone who knows what the are talking about! if you're in doubt don't be this guy is an honest repair guy
still one of the best techs on youtube
Very clear step by step demonstration. Thank you so much
It was the best explanation about upgrading a laptop on TH-cam. Thanks a lot, sir! And greeting from Brazil! :D
I enjoyed the video - I have been delaying changing to a SSD drive because of concerns over loss of my software. It appears very do-able and I'll be buying a drive and will be watching this as a guide for the upgrade. Thanks.
Excellent video. Very informative and well presented.
Nice video, well explained. You are clearly a top tech. 👍
He is a master of teaching of upgrade thanks
Simple, in plain English and to the point! Thanks.
Absolutely a well thought out and executed process. Just like all your other videos. Now if I can just find a replacement battery for my Yoga 910-131KB laptop that actually works properly. Thanks for your wisdom and guidance.
Very helpful, and well-explained. Thanks for sharing.
I liked this video Carey it was very clear and straight forward.
Still a good tutorial in May 2020. Worked PERFECTLY for me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
just came across this video . After watching and hearing your speech with easy explanation you just gained another subscriber my man . nice job
Now this fellow is a very excellent instructor/
Kudos for an exemplary piece of production and
thanks for the in depth instruction youve provided
Guess my W530 may yet have a second life. Added to my project list. Thanks Carey!
Captain Piratedanger Yes it will. Same one I have.
Great job Carey. Great knowledge and presentation.
one of the most useful youtube videos on the internet
Thanks for sharing. I have been doing tech hardware support since 2012 and you have taught me some things I did not know. Keep up the good work.
Very clear and concise tutorial. Truly helpful in maintaining and upgrading an older laptop. Thanks!
Thanks Carey ! Just changed my Hard drive out for a SSD on my laptop.
How much did it improve your speed? im thinking of doing this for my dads laptop.
@@DR-ic8in its a significant difference in boot up as well as response time for ssd when compared to hdd
Thank you very much l appreciate taken time to explain how get most of laptop
