I'm only 28 but I remember hearing this song for the first time when I got Led Zep greatest hits double cd back in 2003 or something. This song used to scare me (because of the reversed version, apparently about satan, on the early internet. Used to give me chills. Obv just a coincidence) but I recognized how beautiful it is. Great track

People have been analyzing these lyrics for 6 decades, so don't feel bad about not capturing there meaning on your first listen. You mentioned Queen during your reaction. Queen's guitarist Brian May has said Led Zeppelin's guitarist Jimmy Page was one of his favorite guitarists. This solo has several riffs that you can clearly hear influenced Mr. May. BTW, Mo you are looking lovely as ever. :-) Thank you for sharing this wonderful video. Stay safe, RNB

I saw Queen in 1975, had front row center stage, My very first concert, they had just released their 2nd album. Brian May is just smoking the guitar, but his facial expression would be like ( in a British accent, blimey, did I forget to turn the water off when I left the house) . 45 years later and that still amazes me, it was at the what is now called, The Tobin Center in San Antonio, TX, then it was the municipal auditorium and probably didnt seat but maybe 2000 or so, and it didnt even sell out, but they performed as if 20,000 were there. The important thing is, I was there, only 17 at the time but I knew I had just witnessed greatness. Freddie Mercury was a master front man with a voice that was fantastic, what a way to get introduced to Rock concerts wow , RIP MR. MERCURY and thank you....

The greatest rock song of the 20th Century inspired by the greatest book of the 20th Century- it has so many Tolkien references- "when I look to the west and my spirit is crying for leaving" is an allusion to the desire of the Elves (including Galadriel) to return to Valinor. Robert Plant has admitted on a number of occasions the profound influence that reading Lord of the Rings had on him and it's not the only Zeppelin song with explicit references- there are many more.

This is quite possibly the greatest song ever made!!! It ranges from beautiful to melodic to groovy to hard grunge metal, and a song about us all, the beginning is classical, we are the woman in the song. Musically, it’s so dynamic, it crosses genres in the modern day sense. It’s just all all around complete song, all 8 minutes of it!!!

This song is great, but it's my *second* favorite Led Zeppelin song.
Probably the most sophisticated of their songs, with the greatest diversity of influences, is the song, "Kashmir."
That one is my favorite, and it's also the favorite of the members of the band, themselves.
Listen to that one, soon, and view a video that includes the lyrics.

"The lyrics take some pretty wild turns, but the beginning of the song is about a woman who accumulates money, only to find out the hard way her life had no meaning and will not get her into heaven" If you go into it with that in mind the changes the music snd style takes along the way have a little more meaning.
