The Galactic Gravel Grinder is an annual gravel bike race put on by Aztec Adventures in early spring to test ones fitness after the winter. Almost all on gravel road with a little pavement, and finishes on 4 miles of single track. The routes showcases the areas extensive network of gravel roads, which are normally utilized by the oil and gas companies. Lucky for or it's all on BLM property so we get to use it for our adventuring and cycling pleasure. With several thousand feet of elevation gain and spectacular views of deep sandstone canyons and snowy rocky mountains the the north this route is a challenge, but well worth the effort, because the views is always better if you earn it.
In this video I ride the 35 mile route while taking in all the scenery of the high desert of southern New Mexico.

The landscape here and the maze of gravel roads to explore it is awesome! I hope to explore Idaho one of these days too.

I always enjoy taking my Trek Checkpoint out on the Road Apple course when I'm up in Farmington. I'll have to keep this race in mind for next year.
