    Gordon Banks, the ex-England goalie, crashed his car into the gatepost of my cousin's farmyard. He lost some of his eyesight in one eye and still played on for a few more years afterwards. A true great.

      Knew he crashed his car and lost sight in one eye, but didn't know it was a farm gatepost. He was a legend. Peter Bonetti, Ray Clemence and Peter Shilton couldn't replace him.

    I was a goalie as a teenager and was selected to represent my regional Uber 16s football team. It really is the most underrated position.
    A striker can have 10 shots in a game and score 3 and have a 'great game'. With a success rate of 30%
    A goalie can have 10 shots at him and if he lets 3 in have a nightmare despite having a success rate of 70%.
    Even with a success rate of 100% letting no goals in we never get the glory

  • @mpmlopes
    @mpmlopes ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Worth mentioning that the goal is huge 7.32m x 2.44m (24ft x 8ft). Also, try throwing yourself into the ground like they do, it hurts like hell, you have to know how to fall. On top of that, they're back on their feet and ready immediately.

    Goal keepers skills are insane, back in my parents day it's the players that had the skill shooting from a distance, but now they always have to get basically right next to the goal.

      David Seamans save vs Sheff utd is on a par if not better. Also follows Banks' save in this video which is quite fitting.

    Most people don't realise how big the goal actually is. We are talking about a size of 7.32m x 2.44m! Most goal keepers are quite huge guys, btw.! Manuel Neuer from Germany is 1.93m tall, Thibaut Courtois from Belgium is 2m tall and Buffon from Italy is 1.92m ... for Americans: That's 6.2+ foot!

  • @terryoconnor5262
    @terryoconnor5262 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I believe that the line is the goalie’s, so it has to completely cross to be a goal… whereas in rugby the line is the attacker’s so if the ball even touches one blade of white grass it’s a try

  • @Otacatapetl
    @Otacatapetl ปีที่แล้ว +2

    To answer your question, the whole of the ball has to be past the whole of the line. There was a recent controversy in a Japan game in the WC, and there's a video or two on TH-cam about it I think.

    that was the only position that I could actually play as I couldn't dribble the ball to save my like, but being nearly 6' tall and having large hands when I was 15 made me sort of ideal for a goalkeeper. Never did like throwing myself to the ground though. My best asset was I could throw (rather than kick) the ball more than half the pitch with great accuracy (most of my other sporting events involved throwing things)

      throwing yourself on the ground like that is nice if the ground is soft cuz it's raining, but the rain fucks up with gloves and makes it harder to catch the ball. It gets more annoying to throw yourself like that with age, and especially having the instinct to instantly be back up and ready for the next shot@@adrianhempfing2042
