  • In 2009 John Piper preached a sermon to the "American Association of Christian Counselors". In this famous clip, he's met with repeated laughter while being completely serious in his talk.
The sermon is called "Beholding Glory and Becoming Whole:
Seeing and Savoring God as the Heart of Mental Health". Watch the whole message here: • Beholding Glory and Be...

@@notbindi Don't worry it is not problematic for me to talk about.
What it is for me personally, is that I miss cues when I don't actively think about them. I am always kind of stressed because of that in social situations. I personally don't really convey emotions through non verbal signals I would say, except for when I am angry or talking to someone I know really well (basically just my close family). How bad I am at understanding how other people feel also depends on how well I know them. I can understand when my sister feels something and I also get some of her irony but with people that I don't know it is a lot harder.
So when I was in school I normally didn't have one on one conversations but I tried to go up to small groups of my friends and just say something if I have to add something to the topic. The only problem about this is that I am always really afraid to go up to people. Even with my friends, if I haven't seen them for a few days, I am hesitant to go to them because I don't really know if they want to talk to me (because I basically also don't know what people think of me)
I got better with age having conversations tho (for example as a kid I took it literally when someone asked me how I am, and now I just know that it just something you say as a greeting) which made it easier to be social,
On the other hand now that I have recently moved out, I get into way harder conversations with total strangers and I can't hide behind my parents anymore and let them do the talking.
My social behavior is not all because I can't read emotions, it is a Kombination of some things that all come with my autism. I just can't separate the reasons why I do things so I guess that is just like a summary of my behavior.
But actually you wouldn't notice it on first glance if I wanted to hide it. I can make good conversations, but it takes a lot of focus and stresses me out.

The pastor often starts off the sermon with like a joke, and then gets into a story about his life that eventually ties into a sermon (not always bad, but it is bad if that happens every single Sunday). It happens so often that that's what people are expecting when someone goes up to preach, but that's just a modern idea that's setup to keep the audience intact. If you look at the sermon on the mount, Jesus didn't start with some joke. Assuming the sermon is a word-for-word transcription. That was 1988 14 years after I had become a Christian and the last 32 years have been a process each day to deny myself that Christ may live. As he says it's no laughing matter because it's a serious problem to come to terms with all those things in us he has mentioned. I wanted to run away and hide but then how how would I ever grow in Christ. Now all that I am has been exposed but in turn by the grace of my Beloved Father I am being reconstituted to be as Christ because now it's he who lives as I die each day.

I just got back from the AACC conference this year.
Funny that this popped up in the algorithm.
there are a lot of different takes why the audience laughed.
And I think each person may have laughed for their own and multiple reasons.
Yes, we are exhausted, it is A LOT to take in. I don't doubt people were loopy and sleep-deprived and burnt out.
And sometimes there are comedians and funny speakers in the line-up.
My take is that at the start his facial expressions are incongruent.
He starts the first 40 seconds self-deprecating humorously but switches to serious with a bit of a frown but continues to self-deprecate and half smile.
Another reaction , and this is mine, is that many know John Piper and the worm theology and self-flagellating feel of his messages and the laughter is a way of saying Bro, you don't have to crucify yourself and take yourself so seriously.
    Lighten up, laugh a little.
Give yourself some grace and rest in God's forgiveness.
At worst it came across as manipulative and insincere.
For him this may be a very vulnerable moment and uncharted territory in his circles but for counselors, we hear this every day all day.
2:02 - 2:26 was genuinely sad. His worst fears were realized.

It was a misunderstanding. A comedian was scheduled to be up during this time slot but it got switched around, and the audience was primed to laugh at what the speaker at the time would be saying. No one knew what was going on until it was too late and he’d already given his sermon

I know you mean well, but it’s sad how people are so quick to judge without getting the full context of a story.
This pastor had his time slot switched last minute with a comedian so the audience thought he was a comedian doing a dead-pan routine.

He may have been on point but he was being vulnerable and honest with them about his shortcomings as a Christian and a husband. I applaud him for his honesty and humility, I wish I had half the courage to be as open, honest and vulnerable in front of a crowd so large. God bless you John, thank you for your sincere example.

Authenticity and transparency from those in leadership roles is comforting and creates a sense of safety that we can be fully known, warts and all. Jesus Died for us while we where yet sinners. It would be great if all believers where able to do this routinely. I think it would make for a interpersonally healthier Church ♥️💕

I appreciate hearing Mr Piper's confessions here. It's encouraging to be reminded that even men I respect... Whose ministries have encouraged and challenged me... are weak in many of the same ways as I am.
    God bless his vulnerability...
... And I can understand why they were laughing. It's all about timing.

His timing is impeccable. Humor is innately personal and insanely territorial. Was does that even mean?
