April 2024 Book of the Month Recap Discussion - Chp. 1-5

Marielle discusses chapters 1-5 of April's BotM, The Wolf and the Wildflower by Stacy Reid.

We meet Jules, our heroine, who has been living her life as a man for 23 years. This is all her mother's doing, and there's sadly no end in sight. She hates these lies between her and her father, but she also knows she has had a lot of privileges as a man that she would absolutely NOT be afforded as a woman, including going to university.

Our hero, James Winter, Duke of Wulverton, was lost in the Canadian wilderness for over 10 years, and has become a bit feral. He is expected to resume his duties as Duke, and no one is sure if he is capable of doing so. Jules and her father, a Dr. of the mind, are hired to assess him.

Upon their meeting, James, using his enhanced senses, becomes aware that Jules is, in fact, a woman. He is INTRIGUED. He agrees to speak with Jules, and ONLY Jules, take it or leave it. They take it, of course.

Jules understands that James needs TIME, which is something he just doesn't have. He agrees to take on the veneer of the Duke, to please people who need pleasing, like his mother and the Queen, but he's not interested in actually changing himself.

He takes Jules for a walk into the forest, and she discovers he has had a tree house built, and is using the help of a local 12-year-old boy as a valet of sorts, who is catching wild game for him. He no longer enjoys the rich foods his mother serves, and she won't hear of changing it.

Jules and James bond in the tree house, and he sniffs her again, which is HOT🔥, and he offers for her to sniff him as well...
