Took a 1200GS around the world. 63 Countries, 50,000 miles, never once left left me stranded. Did I need to get some repairs... of course, but I rode it to BMW every time. BTW, I bought it used. It was 4 years old, had 20K miles, $9,400, and I still have it and love it. Its a boxer and oil cooled. The oil cooler is under the headlight.

buy a used one, I just bought a 2009 with 56k miles on it for $5500. why? because the older bikes have less electronics on them so their easier to maintain with your own hands, also as much as they cost, if i have to dump another 2 grand into it then i'm still ahead of the price tag of newer ones.
and also for better or for worse I could afford the $5500 in cash. so i'm crossing my fingers.
if you do get one, look up leaking fuel flange. its an immediate problem on all BMWs up till 2012

I know some riders who ride GSes eveyday, they will ride in the rain, in the heat, and when its 35 degrees and one thing I can say some of those guys take those bikes on the trails and ride them hard. I can say this, after dropping and falling the bikes take it really well, they only have minor scratches and dings, they truly made those machines to go down and keep their eye appeal. amazing bikes, maybe one day ill get one, me personally I would stick to the street I just can't beat it up, just not my kinda deal.

If you run the bike at higher RPM's from time to time is not 'beating up a bike', will not harm it at all. Red lining the bike on a "cold" engine and not changing the oil when you are supposed to do a lot more harm, "that" is beating up the bike. Most people do not take it off road, some do light off roading, you need better tires for that, for heavier off roading you would have to invest into side rails to protect engine and other components. Personally I won't be taking mine, I get enough off roading mountain biking.

expensive? The Harley Street Glides are 25K just to walk in the dealership door...no ABS/not heated grips etc. I have an 18' Triumph Bonneville T120/ de cat with X-pipe, BC predator pro pipes, and K&N air filter/progressive front spring and Fox piggy back rear shocks - I rode with some Harley guys riding street glides and it was kind of funny listening to them hit the throttle and I'd hear a loud noise but barely see the bike move. I had a hard time riding behind them. One of them piped off and called my bike a moped. I really wanted to leave their asses in the corners, but too much traffic and I'm a nice guy. :D

Issues so far - R1200GS LC 2013 40000km on the clock +- replaced both front and rear rims twice (Spokes), heavy wear on rear brake pads, wobbly front end at 140kmh with paniers, no pannier wobbly at 170km/h. Rear right indicator melted, excessive wear on grips. Three new batteries, replaced rear shock, replaced charger, replaced burnt out stator coil, now having fork bridge issues and gearbox issues not to mention the windshield mounts keep cracking and breaking I replace every service. Normal commuting roughly 80km a day. Completed 1 big trip +- 6000kms and of that 400km was dirt. Biggest money pit ever. Selling mine as soon as I can.

Sounds like you had a lot of bad luck. I have a 2004 r1200gs, so it's an older iteration. Currently at 65000km and thus far only had a failed switch replaced under warranty. It does get wobbly/wavy at 180km/h with panniers and bag strapped on top. But at that speed with that load, any bike is. At normal motorway speeds it's very stable.

I assume you've gotten a lemon, and that once the issues are addressed and fixed or upgraded your GS will be reliable.
I am a member of the BMW plus club of East Texas and one of our local riders has the 2017 version of the BMW 1200 GS It's an amazing machine I was basically drooling over it he explained it was 17,000 dollars used in 2022 or 21 so is about a 4-year-old bike I can't remember the miles. I was explaining a really didn't have that much to spend and he didn't bad an eyelash and he said well then just get the poor man's BMW 1200 GS which is called the Suzuki V-Strom 650 or 1000, and call it a day. Little did I know six months later I would stumble upon a deal on one in immaculate perfect garage kept condition low miles 12,000 for under $3,600 out the door cannot be told from brand new.
So for now that'll have to be my BMW GS 1200 !

I had the good fortune to ride a new 2001 R1150GS back to MN from Las Vegas for the owner. I loved the bike in spite of the weird turn signals. In 2014, I bought a new 1200lc. 2 months later, I took a 2 week trip through Canada. Baby head rock trails for miles, long washout bypasses down creeks, sand, mud, it took them all on. Now it's my workhorse. I travel hundreds of miles weekly for work. Everything was good until the stator went 'poof.' You know, that thing that sits on the end of a transverse crankshaft and takes all of 10 minutes to replace? Yah, no. They put it inside the engine IN FRONT of the transmission. Clutch off, shaft off, transmission off, there it is. Labor x3 what the part cost which was a ridiculous $800+. Scuttlebut on the boards says the earlier ones looked like they were wound by 5-year olds. I was out of warranty, and my pleas to BMW for some financial relief were unfulfilled. I even had some douche from Germany call me to tell me my bike was out of warranty. No $h1t, if it was still in warranty, BMW would have been replacing the stator. The fact that they superceded the part twice fell on deaf ears. After 9 months in the shop (another nightmare...) I'm finally riding again, but not with the same confidence I had before. I love the 2014 for the lighter flywheel. It's a liability in the dirt, but it sure scares the hell out of sport bikes who blow by me only to see my off-road lights right there in their mirrors a few seconds later.
