    If you cut the thumb off a heavy duty kitchen type rubber glove, about 30mm of it using a box cutter and straight edge. Then stretch it over the Keyless Ride switch it covers the whole switch body and fits like a glove (haha). It’s flexible and protects the switch from the sun and the elements. It’s cheaper than a new Keyless Ride switch👍🏻

    Hi Tim, I was contemplating selling my 2015 R1200GS this morning. I have had it from new but have only managed to do 51 thousand miles on it. Due to the virus I have been hit very hard financially so bike maintenance has been sketchy to say the least, but still the GS chugs on. Even though I clean my bike regularly the engine paint was lifting within 2 years and it has carried on doing so.
    So this morning I was feeling a bit down which is very unusual for me, when I came across your year old video and saw the light. I have loved this bike all these years and it just fits me somehow and with my financial situation improving why the hell would I want to sell her. I am booking her into the shop today for a major service, she deserves it. Thanks Tim for bringing me to my senses.

    Hi Tim. Agree with everything you said about the GS. My GSA has 200,000 miles on it (360,000k’s) and has been awesome. To me they are a sports tourer that can handle dirt roads and forest trails while comfortably eating up big miles. Your vids are always so inspiring mate. Thanks!

    "I'm starting to get used to it", referring to center stand interference while standing on the pegs.....AFTER 100,000 MILES! LOL!! I recently took my 2009 R1200R to the dealer for lack of power and surging in the engine and a failed ABS. They wanted $3,500 to fix it. Nope! I paid them $460 to give me that bad news, brought it back home and went online. I got the engine running as it should with a new camshaft position sensor and (literally) a few light taps on the ABS Module's motor to free up a sticky brush and it, too, is working fine. Not counting the $460 the dealer's service department got from me I spent just under $300 and that included an OBDLink and MotoScan app to handle my own diagnosis in the future. With service support like this, I will NOT be buying another BMW!

    • @nokoolaid
      @nokoolaid 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Module Masters in Idaho I think does the ABS rebuild for 250 or something like that. There is the GS911 scan tool. The problem with Motoscan is that it's android only. I might try it with BlueStacks on my Mac to see if it works though. I do all my own maintenance and repairs on my 2009 RT. Bought it new in 2010. Fuel strip went twice, replaced under extended repair notice by BMW. There is a new recall on the fuel pumps that may apply to you.

    • @speedster2464
      @speedster2464 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep my 07 ABS light was on and BMW was looking £1100 to replace the ABS unit, a little research done, removed it my self and sent it away, got it back repaired within the week with a lifetime warranty for around £150 + £5 for new brake fluid and three years later still going strong!

Other guys will take a brand new demo bike and pretend to do a some sort of a review within that half an hour of riding (if that). On top of that their riding experience is that of a total beginner.

    I appreciate that video probably more than anything else you've put out there. It's hard to find good honest reviews about bikes with higher miles. Not so many people ride them that much! Good for you for breaking 100k! I believe your video on the saddle sore ride is the one that got me to do mine! So thank you for that. It was fun, and rewarding. Great review Tim. Sometimes things prevent total honesty, but the GS was one of the best bikes I’ve owned. Weight distribution, smooth throttle/ power distribution and just plain nimbleness of the bike are the main reasons. I did switch the stock seat with the tall seat right when I got it but experience the same lack of comfort. I have tried an air hawk but just could never get comfortable with it. (Like the sheep skin though) Tried a friends custom made Sargent for a ride, it felt good but was a short ride. Maybe one of your other followers has more experience on one. The rox anti-vibe risers were a great add, I put them on all my adv bikes. The only other thing I did, that I would swear by, is spend some big $ on upgrading the entire suspension. (Shocks and forks) that was the single best really noticeable improvement I’ve made. I’ll have to look into the clutch, thanks for the tip.
    Be well and safe travels my friend! ~B

      If you try an Air Hawk seat pad, just a small puff of air is all you need for comfort. It doesn't deflate on it's own either. Worked for me but the manufacturers put a bright red stripe down the middle of the seat. I have taken a black permanent marker to it and works like a charm (nothing on my bike is red and I don't want to draw attention away from the bike and onto a seat pad).

    • @thomasatwood484
      @thomasatwood484 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Try a Cool cover mesh cover (from UK) on your seat. I spent a week in August with one of these on my bike, and it made my ~430 mile daily mileage very manageable. Very breathable cover, but it doesn't detach you from what the bike is doing like an Air Hawk does.

    I've got a 2007 Honda CBR 150 with over 100,000 miles (160,000 kilometers) on it in Thailand. Still runs well, though the carb needs to be re-built. I change oil at 4000 kilometers and use Motul or Shell synthetic. Here in Thailand, it's not uncommon to put this amount of mileage on small motorcycles. It's needed multiple chains, tires, batteries but those are maintenance items. The clutch is the original and the engine has never been opened.

  • @MotoCampAdventure
    @MotoCampAdventure 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Love the review man! One thing I'd like to point out is that you usually don't need to replace the valve cover gaskets every time the covers are pulled off. I know you mentioned that's a job you don't do yourself (which I totally get and appreciate). They're pretty beefy gaskets which is probably why they're expensive, but I know BMW mechanics that generally only replace them when necessary. Hopefully that's helpful in some way. Love your videos.

      I approve!
      I work at the factory and in general you can say only parts that get permanently compressed/deformed or abraded (just like sealed & encapsulated screws) need to be changed.
      The valve cover gasket is a rubber sealed copper kinda gasket and only needs to be changed when its damaged. And this goes for about everything on any bike ^^

    Regarding the key-less FOB loosing connection with the bike. I had the same problem on a long trip, after changing the battery with a generic brand new one, from The Source, before leaving. When I got back home, I found and switched the the old battery back in. Even though it was almost empty it stayed connected perfectly up until the dealership replaced it during a maintenance check with a new one of the same. Basically you need to use the same model battery that came with the FOB (Panasonic I think) and you will be fine.

    I feel the same overall about the bike. I had the same bike you have and made the up grade for the 1250 about a month ago. I love the new engine, feels a little more well balanced, torquy and in fact it is more powerful, but the 1200 was ok too. Now with the panniers and a passenger, it behaves easily than the 1200. And see that I use to enjoy a lot my 1200. The seat still is a pane. By your experienced opinion I am thinking about changing for a more comfortable one. Thanks for sharing, it is quite useful to count with long using experienced riders opinions. And thanks for the numbers. Costs are always a point to pay atention.👍🏻

I have not wanted to spend $600+ on an after market sit so I use the arihawk cushion for long rides. It is cheap and a game changer as you can adjust the air and always make it feel different so pressure is never on the same spot. Also helps with the air flow. Take care

    Absolutely on point. Great review. You touch on things that most people don't discuss in detail, including sales guys at dealerships. GS's are balanced, great at many things and terrains, reliable, expensive to fix if you break something (but we don't get into this game unless we can afford it lol.), but they don't break easily, and absolutely a joy to ride anywhere. I realize I'm just stating the obvious especially to any other GS rider, but for the newbies or folks thinking about a GS. As NIKE says" Just Do It"

    ABS is there when you're not always on your game., I 've got it, it's never been intrusive. Tire pressure monitoring ( when it stays working) is God's gift to mankind., I worked in a tire shop years ago, & the lack of proper inflation was like leaving a few bolts out on an aircraft wing. Checking valve clearance is easy & cheap, adjusting it ( the usually tight ones) requires a lot more work , & usually a bunch of different size shims you're unlikely to have with you. ,So I agree with you there ,although you may want to try checking them yourself to see if they need adjusting.I've seen ridiculous instructions dutifully followed by on line videos, when really all you have to do is have the cam lobe directly opposite from the surface it presses down on.My bike instructions involve removing the front wheel , peering through tiny access holes to look at timing marks just so you can adjust some valves simultaneously., Then taking out spark plugs (instead of just loosening), all absurd when you can just leave everything assembled & line up the cams by very slowly turning the engine to let the compression leak out the loosened spark plugs & then reuse the gasket (if it's undamaged)which is most of the time! ."KEY FOBS NOBODY WANTS" ., BUT COMPLAINTS GO UNHEARD TO THE DEALER BECAUSE THEY ALWAYS BREAK YEARS LATER !! & most cost a fortune to buy & program.

    Nice review. I ride a 2013 1200 GSA and it is the most fun motorcycle I have ever ridden and I have been riding since 1964, if we can call a Trail 90 a motorcycle, as a kid. The value of the BMW exceeds the cost for me. One thing you might have added in your stats is your average fuel mileage. Mine is around 47 mpg. The GS GSA is always the gold standard that all other adventure bikes are measured against. And the BMW is set up from the factory for two up touring. Just a great bike.

    If you cut the end of the thumb from a heavy duty black rubber kitchen type glove, you can stretch it over the top of the Keyless Ride switch. It looks really neat, covers the whole switch, and is obviously very flexible, if it deteriorates over time just replace it with the same thing. It's just a little bit cheaper than a new Keyless Ride switch, hahah.

I am from Quebec Canada so the riding season is pretty much over now. I will get it out again in April. I also love the bike. It's a great ride. Couldn't be happier really. I hope it will stay trouble free for a long time as I am not much of a mechanic and I don't think I could change a clutch :-) It's not a perfect bike, but as for you, it fits me well. I love the power of the boxter engine and the comfort of the ergonomics when I am riding it. Anyway, thanks for the video and keep riding my friend. Dan

    Nice review. If you are careful you don't have to replace the gaskets everytime you check the valves. The seat will be much more comfortable if you remove the bar risers, you will have to lean forward slightly, exactly as BMW designed the ergonomics, they know what they are doing ;-) I have 2018 model, done 40,000km in 18months.

    Tim, I've owned a couple of BMW's and ridden quite a few and ALL seats require replacement. That's just the way it is, IMHO of course. Great job

    • @SuperBardley
      @SuperBardley 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The seats are a huge problem...since forever I think. The short answer is that BMW has made the choice to put a seat on that feels pretty good on the showroom floor and for 10-minute test rides because it helps sell bikes. The real problem is the seat foam is too soft and weak, so it gets over compressed after an hour or so, it lacks resilience, and the aftermarket seats all utilize denser foams to correct this.
      Too bad BMW can’t take a clue from certain German shoe manufacturers that understand this phenomenon yet continue to successfully produce and sell shoes that use dense foam midsoles, because those “harder” shoes end up offering better all day foot support. That’s what the seats/our butts need.

    Great informative video. I have a 2015 Triple Black. 26k miles only ... love it (with the only exception being the gear change). Did that new clutch make the shifts any less agricultural?

  • @Speedytrip

    I'm looking for a used one, but the cost of replacing clutch is frightening and many don't have a maintenance log, so it's a bit like playing Russian roulette. I wish I could afford a new one, but it's not an option at the moment.

    Great review lots of good insight on the GSA, i have a 2015 now for almost a year and have much to learn about this type of bike,have always rode pavement on Harley Davidson, got tired of pavement so i bought a 650 gs just to try it, loved every minute but at 6' and 200# it just wasn't big enough for me and a week of gear, so i sprang for the big guy...safe travels.

    Tim - I have the '19 1250 GSA and that bike is a dream - the engine is incredibly smooth, clutch like butter, quick shifter much improved, etc., etc. You're dead on about the feeling you get when riding it. It's addicting and confidence inspiring. Go anywhere, do anything. It does it all very well. I think they improved the seat since the '15, cuz I don't feel the pain like you do. Also the Puig windscreen is the best after market one to get. Taller, but has the same styling as the OEM. Great review, thank you!

    Great review! That's almost the same opinion i have of this bike. :D I own a 2018 R1200GS Adventure Rally and already have 40000km/25000mi in 2 years on the clock! If you ever think about changing/uprading your bike to a newer version. Think about taking the adventure variant. It's a little bit heavier, but the tank capacity is insane and the wind protection is slightly better because of the big tank... aaaand the stock Adventure Rally version already comes with 'better' footpegs, crash bars etc.

    Great review! I had a few comments as a fellow GS owner (2013).
    Seat - try a Sargent, and if you need airflow, I recently added a Cool cover 3D mesh to it, which is awesome.
    Surprised you didn't mention the ESA shocks, which are maybe the best part of the bike to me. Along with the low center of gravity, it's what lets you go from chasing down sport bikes to crawling over trails. I'll need to get my shocks rebuilt soon. Since you didn't mention that, I'll assume you need to soon as well. They'll go about 50k before they start needing a rebuild, unless you're doing a lot of off-road, in which case cut that to 25k. At 100k they must be pretty ratty.

    10-15k miles out of a rear tire (aswell as 100k miles on a set of front brake pads) and "riding the bike pretty hard" definitely doesn't add up though.

      @@checker3694 sure, thats not "riding hard" though.
      On my sportbike I'll need new pads after 6k miles. Even on my 70hp VStrom 650, which I primarily use for commuting and 2up-trips, I'll need new pads after 15k miles. This might be partially because I live in the middle of the alps where you naturally need to brake more, but 100k is still absurd.

    I have to agree on the seat. The wife and I have been thinking of getting a Sargent Seat for our 750. Keyless ride I was not to interested in it but I really did not have a choice, 1.5 years later the bike just told me the battery is at 50%. The battery in my Toyota fob is 16 years old, it only opens the doors but it has only been replaced once in that time. I also have a puig windscreen as they seem to be the cheapest option but yet give great coverage! BMW should give you a deep discount on a new version for all of the free advertising they get from you! By Deep I'm talking free! Wishful thinking on my part

    The next time you have to replace the clutch, leave the friction plates to soak in engine oil overnight to give them time to impregnate the oil. Doing this will prevent premature wear or even failure of the friction plates if you put them in dry. :)
