Stationed in Germany and just ordered this with M-Sport, Harman Kardon and manual trans, no other options. It was 33G after the absolutely sick Military discount.
I really love this car, quick, looks good inside and out, good mpg, and with the M package perfect set up, balanced, and under $40k with the option packages you would want, BMW really did a great job providing the customer with what they want, modernized old school BMW fun, it's like having the E36 again but with better fuel economy
I would agree that the previous 1 series had a stubby rear, but the 2 series is much better. Maybe even looks better than the 3/4 series bigger brothers.
I love the front end of this car more than the new 3 series design. The tail light are a little too big though, but other than that its a beautiful car! Love that pearl paint too.
This cars dimensions closely compare to the legendary E-46. The rest of the car closely emulates the E-46, except for the looks (not nearly as classic or symmetrically as good looking), that a side, it performs excellently, especially in the M235 version. I drove both extensively. My impressions were equally favorable towards both. The M-sport package in the 228i or the M-235 is a good choice. To the M-235's credit the engine of the 6 did feel smoother and less strained, though some people might prefer the 4 cyl.'s torquey rpm spin. All said, a fine car.
5.74 at a mile high? That is real quick for a 240 bhp car! Two things, one the power is under rated, two, the car really puts the power to the ground very very well. I have driven this around a track at a BMW event. Supreme fun car it is.
and I get flamed for stating (in another of these videos) that 7.8 seconds is absolutely not "surprisingly good" for a 290bhp car and they went on and on and on about it being a mile high. Well, it doesn't seem to stop this 240hp car from hitting 5.74. Bunch of jackasses.
MilkEnvy08 I don't understand this truism. At sea level a turbo compresses a given volume of air per second. It compresses the same amount at a mile above sea level. Therefore, if the rarefied atmosphere results in a loss of power for a given volume of air, then the turbo should suffer a loss of power, and this power loss should be, pro rata, the same as that suffered by a naturally aspirated engine.
But you have to think again Nathan you cannot disqualify a car because is not a manual transmission, now days almost all cars that are coming out are automatic plus some of us prefer automatic over manual. Just a thought.
What's really great, is an automatic gearbox affords me the freedom to do my makeup in-car if I'm running a bit late for coffee with the girls. Who needs to be bothered by that silly "driving" nonsense anyway?

I totally agree with the stubby tail but I prefer it much more than the older E90 rear ends! 0-60 in 5.4 seconds doesn't sound that impressive for a *28 but considering BMW switched from a 3.0 litre-6 down to a 2.0 litre - 4... WOW, beautiful engineering !
I've owned an Rx-8 and a Gt86, I now drive one of these(well a 230i M-sport in manual), its a great package and genuinely fast, however its not a sharp car. Throttle response is average, rev hang, awkward pedals. Super fun and I love the car, but not exactly a machine for the purist.
@@avalanx Thank you Daniel! Would you believe the 230 could be on par with GT86 with proper suspension setup? Or not (e.g. because of steering / body roll / handling)?
@@panosalp the limitations are not so much in handling as they are in terms of the electronic interference with the gearshift and the lack of a limited slip differential. You can't actually shift aggressively in the 230i and on the limit the lack of an LSD is irritatingly noticeable. It certainly is not meant for regular track use.
@@avalanx I was considering one with a manual gearbox, so the shifting could somehow be more bearable. I understand though that even if I get an LSD on top, it is more of a touring car rather than an occasional track-day. Which means GT86 / BRZ makes more sense. Thanks!
I have this car nine months. I have it with the M track package. For me... It is an unsettling enigma of a car. In every day driving, but on GOOD roads, the car jiggles and jitters on any Tarmac that is less than perfect. This in comfort mode which also has a varying degree of looseness in steering; firming up a bit with speed. Put sport on and the steering tightens with good heft; but the ride verges on "jumpy" again on GOOD but not perfect roads. I suppose if you are a racer.. You will enjoy the car on open highways, however, jump it to sport and ANY imperfection on a great road will "jiggle" you for a moment. Comfort mode helps out with heftier steering as you build speed. All in all, for an "everyday" driver, this car never "glues" you to the road. Add to that ( for me at least) the pilot tires never let you forget the road noise in "everyday" cruising. This suspension was tuned for one purpose: the track! If that is not your bag, the ride needs more "absorption" and road hugging for ANY Tarmac that is less than "PERFECT" When is my lease up????
Did you turn off traction control and run it. In this car traction control holds it back by a bit. It also might be to cold up there run better numbers.
Great review and what a great car. Visually appealing as well as a great drive. Only thing that held me back was the price tag. After having test driven this car and the 2016 Camaro SS.... for the same price the Camaro won in every catagory but looks and mpg. Was a hard choice.
Is this car quite easy to drive? I want a fun sports car to enjoy, but it’s also something my girlfriend needs to be able to drive. Can it be driven sensibly or is it incredibly responsive?

This is what the 1-series should have been all along. That's the one that's really stubby and pot bellied. The 2-series actually looks pretty good. If they had done it right the first time there would be plenty of used 1-series cars that would seem like bargains by now. You can already find a nice 228i used for just over $30k. Another year or two and there will be used sub-$30k 228i and 235i all over the place.
My 2003 Honda Accord sedan can get to 60 in 5.9 so I think I'll look for an older more affordable car that's quicker than this BMW. It's ridiculous that it also weighs as much as my big sedan.
You're surprised? Quality engineering, materials, Extremely low road and interior noise. Your accord has a much larger V6 but it's all cheap plastic and not much weight because it's all shitty components
+promodelred when I installed my cold air intake I was amazed by how much useless plastic components were used for the intake. Like 20lbs worth of plastics for the air to go through.
