    • @starfishsystems
      @starfishsystems ปีที่แล้ว +16

No, you could not be more wrong if you worked at it.
The field of computer science is very specifically concerned with the nature of computation and how it works. Gödel undecidability is a good example of this exercise.
That you "use code all the time" doesn't require that you have any grasp of computational linguistics. When we design a programming language, there may be a technological motivation to produces the kind of product that you might use, say, for writing simulations. That's the motivation, properly, of SOFTWARE ENGINEERING.
The motivation in COMPUTER SCIENCE to design a programming language is very different. We're looking to establish the limits of expressive power, for example at a fundamental level which grammars are sufficient for which classes of computation, for example parallelization or theorem proving or quantum computing. The goal is not to dream up mechanisms which we don't understand but to proceed through mathematical formalism a treatment of the computation that we do understand.
The one notable exception - and indeed the grounds for longstanding objection by computer science formalists - is neural networks. As with genetic algorithms but much more dramatically, we understand the mechanism but not what it's doing. That's a qualitative departure from traditional forms of computation, and it's not even clear that it can be called computer science.

For anyone wanting to know what the flash at 8:41 is, it reads:
    "Full Disclosure:
The 'physics is deeply logical' idea is just a pet theory I've showhorned in here alongside clever people's theories to make it look legitimate. But isn't there something charming about the idea that the universe is purely geometrical down there at the very bottom?
I think so. Then again, plenty of things are charming and still useless. Otters for example.
    Excuse me. Let's continue."
Then there's a cute picture of an otter. I thought it was gunna be some joke or inside tid-bit. I spent like 5 minutes trying to pause the video right on that one frame, even on .25 speed. Well, if you're insatiably curious like I am, yet don't wanna try to pause for it, here you go.
Edit: Thanks for all the love! I'm glad this was useful to so many people

Fun story about anesthetics. I had a hernia surgery a few months ago and obviously, I was put under. Surgery went fine, no problems.
I come home from hospital and notice that every time I start to fall asleep, something jolts me awake. Not 'oh I'm falling', more 'oh no you don't, wake the fuck up'. This happened less frequently as nights went on and after a week or three, it never happened again.
I theorise that it was a part of me that wasn't put under, a sub-subconsciousness, fearing the consciousness and subconsciousness would both go under like during the surgery and wake 'me' up to prevent it. Eventually 'it' realised it won't happen again and let 'me' sleep peacefully.
So I can totally see how we have no idea how anesthetics work. Who knows what we are and are not 'knocking out'? What if that sub-subconsciousness is awake during it in some sense and it's terrified?
I wonder if others have the same experience. I can't find it. But then I can also hear my subconsciousness processing things in the background of my mind (different from thinking), like a dream without the time dilation, so maybe I'm just more.... Likely to experience things like that? Who knows.
Fun stuff to think about while high too.

In fact it fits me staggeringly well, must have been made to have me in it!' This is such a powerful idea that as the sun rises in the sky and the air heats up and as, gradually, the puddle gets smaller and smaller, frantically hanging on to the notion that everything's going to be alright, because this world was meant to have him in it, was built to have him in it; so the moment he disappears catches him rather by surprise. it's sad we'll never see it though, as it belongs to the realm of noumena. Knowledge isn't possible, we've got a web, or maybe a tangle, of ideas but not a clue in sight. With the Münchhausen trilemma in mind, it's really astonishing that we've managed to get as far as we have.

The mystery at the bottom of physics is "Why is there physics?" or more accurately "why does anything exist? why does it follow rules? And why these rules?"
Maybe humanity will discovery these answers, maybe it won't, but those are the questions that everything else in physics just has to politely skirt around.

    • @lucifer.Morningstar369
      @lucifer.Morningstar369 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

Humans are not smart enough to answer it. The answer could be right in our faces yet we will deny it. Because we ourselves are part of the equation. And for something or some consciousness to exist beyond us is to crazy for us to accept.

Your metaphor regarding the iceberg reminded me instantly of this particular poem:
    THE CONVERGENCE OF THE TWAIN
(Lines on the loss of the "Titanic")
    by Thomas Hardy
    I
In a solitude of the sea
    Deep from human vanity,
And the Pride of Life that planned her, stilly couches she.
    II
    Steel chambers, late the pyres
    Of her salamandrine fires,
Cold currents thrid, and turn to rhythmic tidal lyres.
    in
    III
    Over the mirrors meant
    To glass the opulent
The sea-worm crawls-grotesque, slimed, dumb, indifferent.
    IV
    Jewels in joy designed
    To ravish the sensuous mind
Lie lightless, all their sparkles bleared and black and blind.
    V
    Dim moon-eyed fishes near
    Gaze at the gilded gear
And query : "What does this vaingloriousness down here?” . . .
    VI
    Well: while was fashioning
    This creature of cleaving wing,
The Immanent Will that stirs and urges everything
    VII
    Prepared a sinister mate
    For her-so gaily great
A Shape of Ice, for the time far and dissociate.
    VIII
And as the smart ship grew
    In stature, grace, and hue,
In shadowy silent distance grew the Iceberg too
    IX
    Alien they seemed to be:
    No mortal eye could see
The intimate welding of their later history,
    X
Or sign that they were bent
    By paths coincident
On being anon twin halves of one august event,
    XI
Till the Spinner of the Years
Said "Now!" And each one hears,
And consummation comes, and jars two hemispheres.

True, but that applies to almost every other evidence. It's just how you interpret it. I was religious, not anymore, the same stuff that made me believe in a god are the same things that make me doubt the existence of one now

God is the wrong word I say. I mean all the religious gods are basically just some kind of humanoid rules. God ain't the word for whatever started this if it did at all. The way we are connected and unseperable from atoms the same way it's white this so called God
