I love the realization of "we use stuff but dont know how it works" because thats a fundamental part of computer science. I use code all the time that I dont understand at all.
real
No, you could not be more wrong if you worked at it.
The field of computer science is very specifically concerned with the nature of computation and how it works. Gödel undecidability is a good example of this exercise.
That you "use code all the time" doesn't require that you have any grasp of computational linguistics. When we design a programming language, there may be a technological motivation to produces the kind of product that you might use, say, for writing simulations. That's the motivation, properly, of SOFTWARE ENGINEERING.
The motivation in COMPUTER SCIENCE to design a programming language is very different. We're looking to establish the limits of expressive power, for example at a fundamental level which grammars are sufficient for which classes of computation, for example parallelization or theorem proving or quantum computing. The goal is not to dream up mechanisms which we don't understand but to proceed through mathematical formalism a treatment of the computation that we do understand.
The one notable exception - and indeed the grounds for longstanding objection by computer science formalists - is neural networks. As with genetic algorithms but much more dramatically, we understand the mechanism but not what it's doing. That's a qualitative departure from traditional forms of computation, and it's not even clear that it can be called computer science.
@@starfishsystems You dont code, do you?
@@starfishsystems It is quite literally functionally impossible for a person coding a website to know how it works down to the physical processor and computer parts.

Fun story about anesthetics. I had a hernia surgery a few months ago and obviously, I was put under. Surgery went fine, no problems.
I come home from hospital and notice that every time I start to fall asleep, something jolts me awake. Not 'oh I'm falling', more 'oh no you don't, wake the fuck up'. This happened less frequently as nights went on and after a week or three, it never happened again.
I theorise that it was a part of me that wasn't put under, a sub-subconsciousness, fearing the consciousness and subconsciousness would both go under like during the surgery and wake 'me' up to prevent it. Eventually 'it' realised it won't happen again and let 'me' sleep peacefully.
So I can totally see how we have no idea how anesthetics work. Who knows what we are and are not 'knocking out'? What if that sub-subconsciousness is awake during it in some sense and it's terrified?
I wonder if others have the same experience. I can't find it. But then I can also hear my subconsciousness processing things in the background of my mind (different from thinking), like a dream without the time dilation, so maybe I'm just more.... Likely to experience things like that? Who knows.
Fun stuff to think about while high too.
I'm not sure if that's horrifying or intriguing.
@@AstroDas360 Both
I mean we actually kind of do know how they work. They work by inhibiting certain neurotransmitters in your brain so there's that
I had something similar happen after having my gallbladder removed. When I would try going to sleep and was right at that point where you go from being awake to asleep, my body would almost jolt itself awake. I would wake up almost panicking with this nagging feeling that I just stopped myself from never waking up again.
@@williethekid5656maybe because anesthesia does in fact, contrary to what OP’s comment says, completely “shut” you down, and you’ve managed to trick the brain that it died. The human brain is fascinating in the way that even if it knows it’s being tricked, or if even it knows the truth behind something, it still falls for it.

The mystery at the bottom of physics is "Why is there physics?" or more accurately "why does anything exist? why does it follow rules? And why these rules?"
Maybe humanity will discovery these answers, maybe it won't, but those are the questions that everything else in physics just has to politely skirt around.
I love that reply 😊
Humans are not smart enough to answer it. The answer could be right in our faces yet we will deny it. Because we ourselves are part of the equation. And for something or some consciousness to exist beyond us is to crazy for us to accept.
I think questions like those may be impossible to answer or there might not be an answer, maybe this is just the way the universe is and there is no explanation behind it.
@@OmniversalInsect maybe. Or maybe the explanation is unknowable for entities from inside the universe. Or maybe we will eventually work it out. We are too early in the study of the universe to be sure of anything like that yet.
@OmniversalInsect we are basically fish in a fishbowl. We don't know how or why we are here, and we can't see outside the bowl. Yet there is a whole reality outside the bowl we can't see. High dimensions. Existence is eternal, infinite. Which hurts my brain. Like how can something go on forever? And how large is the scale of dimensions? What's outside of the dimensions? Your metaphor regarding the iceberg reminded me instantly of this particular poem:
THE CONVERGENCE OF THE TWAIN
(Lines on the loss of the "Titanic")
by Thomas Hardy
I
In a solitude of the sea
Deep from human vanity,
And the Pride of Life that planned her, stilly couches she.
II
Steel chambers, late the pyres
Of her salamandrine fires,
Cold currents thrid, and turn to rhythmic tidal lyres.
in
III
Over the mirrors meant
To glass the opulent
The sea-worm crawls-grotesque, slimed, dumb, indifferent.
IV
Jewels in joy designed
To ravish the sensuous mind
Lie lightless, all their sparkles bleared and black and blind.
V
Dim moon-eyed fishes near
Gaze at the gilded gear
And query : "What does this vaingloriousness down here?” . . .
VI
Well: while was fashioning
This creature of cleaving wing,
The Immanent Will that stirs and urges everything
VII
Prepared a sinister mate
For her-so gaily great
A Shape of Ice, for the time far and dissociate.
VIII
And as the smart ship grew
In stature, grace, and hue,
In shadowy silent distance grew the Iceberg too
IX
Alien they seemed to be:
No mortal eye could see
The intimate welding of their later history,
X
Or sign that they were bent
By paths coincident
On being anon twin halves of one august event,
XI
Till the Spinner of the Years
Said "Now!" And each one hears,
And consummation comes, and jars two hemispheres.
This is the best motivational video ever. Yes, I do love Science and Mathematics (The understandable parts.)
That anestesia part...
What if we feel everything but just forget it
Some people don't forget it.
what if they invented a teleportation device that killed you, but made an exact copy of you with your memories at a different location? Are you still dead? Are you even "you" anymore? Who is the new "you", are they seperate?
That's only semi-related, but my dad asked me this when I was 9 and I'm still freaked out by it
@@a-bird-lover As someone who has thought about that a lot, I would say yes, you are still you. And that would be true even if the original was still alive. There wouldn't be an "original" you and a "fake" you, there would be two of you.
@@FirstRisingSouI They're all pretty rhetorical questions, if you have an answer it's not going to be everyone's answer
@@a-bird-lover Considering that a person's "self" is a conceptual construct rather than something fundamental to reality, I agree.
The only possible answer to the "Why" questions is "Go to bed".
Every Parent knows that.
oh shut up and eat your bun
Doesn't matter what time of day either
Go to bed
Well I’m sure it can get quite tiresome constantly fielding questions from your kid, I wouldn’t know but I like to think that when my future kids ask me why that I’ll answer in a similar way this video did, which will probably be way over their stupid little heads and get them to shut up about it all the same.
i'll be honest, my Alexa would make a better parent!
Yea that worked so well with us, that's why were here watching this video, don't do that, tell them we can not possibly know and the fact we exist at all is a miracle
I love your books! 🖤 I hope you write more
Dude, if you ever potter over to nz I want to buy you a pint! Your writing is awesome, but your narration and editing is stellar.

That last bit made me tear up. Thank you
My dude, my feed suggested this vid as I climbed into my Buick to take my freshly purchased groceries & myself home for a meal (if indeed you call it such) & as my first taste of your labors echoed to a closed I was overwhelmed by the desire to give you a standing ovation as all the others in my head were already doing so & I didn’t want to let on that I had no idea 🤷♂️ what you had said much less meant. Jumping to my feet I realized that the traffic light changed to a deep red color(the officer tells me that generally indicates one should stop) & I realized I could no longer reach the steering wheel much less the brake. Long story medium i have inclosed the vet bill for the endah🎉ngered armadillo & auto repairs. I don’t think it’s fair for you to pay the lawyer fee. Great job by the way!
"There's a mystery in plain sight called everything". Truly awesome.
Brilliant quote!
We are the universe looking at itself.
“Full disclosure: The ‘physics is deeply logical’ idea is just a pet theory I’ve shoehorned in here alongside clever people’s theories to make it look legitimate. But isn’t there something charming about the idea that the universe is purely geometrical down there at the very bottom?
I think so. Then again, plenty of things are charming and still useless. Otters for example.
Excuse me. Let’s continue.”
took me seven tries but i got it paused lmao
Thank you
I did it to
For future reference, you can use comma and period to go forward and back 1 frame at a time respectively! :D
@@rinzlerxv1649 woah that's helpful. Also can you do that on phone?
@@shkhrvarshney Not from what I can tell sadly :( but you can set the number of seconds the double tap will skip which I found useful.
I love your ability to zoom out and retrospect our existence. Feels fking good man ❤
