I tend to stand up for myself, it's the principle, not the $. For me, personally, I was stepped on most of my life, which is a long story. I'm getting tired of getting stepped on, and I have the patience to stand up for my principles. Though, at some point, for $5 or less, I would just cave. More than $5, I stand up.

The problem with just giving a partial is that this buyer/seller will continue to get away with it. He’s probably done it multiple times because they know they will always win

Just say no. I sold a parts and repair laptop to someone last month and while I was being thorough in my ad and said literally titled my listing with BROKEN in the beginning he combed through my listing to find some small thing that could be taken a different way and then ask for a discount a month later. I take it that he does this as a business practice to pad his bank account every month off of seller's back. I kept playing his game waiting out with slow messages waiting out until after 30 days from delivery which gives the seller a little bit more control. I asked him what about the laptop was wrong and what he was really asking for. He just messaged one word, "discount". Well why didn't he ask Ebay to step in to maybe have it returned to me? The reason is because he wants the laptop and it was a great deal. I'll fight a negative if he gives one. Take their bluff and be ok with a return. Also Ebay will also warn a buyer if they open up too many claims believe it or not. So this is why they fish for a refund and don't open up a case.

A couple months ago I sold a Pair of used Airpods that I bought for $12. I listed it for $80 even though I didn't test them, stated in my listing not tested. It sold and a couple weeks later the buyer says that one airpod won't link to his phone. He asked for a refund. I gave him a partial refund because I only spent $12 and it is easier and quicker for both parties. I made sure that the cost of the item was covered plus original shipping when I calculated the partial refund. Customer happy, seller happy.

99% of the time I won't do partial refund. Always make costumer return the item. Any time a buyer request a partial refund, I always report them because it is against ebay policy for buyers to request a partial refund even if it might be merited. Use the 50% refund tool; and always report the buyer. If the buyer is a seller and they've been reported enough times; I'm sure eBay will ban their selling account.

You’ve given me to much info to work with. Lol original open refund and proceed through natural steps but now the threat of chargeback I’m opening an ic3 for mail fraud because he has pushed me too far. Easier to just give the $10. But it hurts everyone in the long run, too many asking for partial knowing they are getting over.

I don't have a simple answer. It depends on whether the customer has a valid complaint, whether the request is more do-able than wasting my time further if the complaint is facetious, and how reasonable it is money-wise. It also depends on what kind of mood I'm in and whether the customer strikes me as dishonest or obnoxious. It also depends on whether the item is fragile, in which case, a return is usually a non-starter because they won't pack it right and I'll get it back in pieces.

Interesting video big John. For smaller sellers it’s easy to do because you know personally that you went through that product and you know it was brand new when it left. When you have workers all that goes out the window so in my case no doubt about it they get the money back.

Jon, I enjoy yours and anyone else's scammer vids. It educates me on what to watch out for and think about what I would have done. I sell in the Antiques and Collectibles category and had a similar experience with an antique pocket watch. There's a proper way to pack pw's, and I pack them that way. I had just had the watch serviced and I always test right before shipping. The buyer claimed the watch arrived and wasn't running. And their watch guy would charge $50 to fix it. I knew if I had him send it back it would arrive in need of major repair. So I paid the blackmail and went on down the road.

I made a sale of $30 buyer told me my items wasn't as beautiful as my pictures he wanted a partial refund of $10. I said no if your not happy send it back and I'll refund your money. Buyer said he didn't have time to send them back and I did not commit to giving him $10. Who can guess what I got?? negative feedback. Wahoo!!
so now having the deal with getting it removed done spent 30 minutes on the phone probably had to spend another 30 minutes because still having got it resolved yet and don't know if I ever will. All in all 10 bucks would have made all this go away with no negative feedback. But when you know the buyer's in the wrong he's just fishing as you described, its nothing but a slap in the face and I feel the need to fight back its in my nature to do so the same as yours. I hate to say we're fighting a losing battle my friend but I'm in it to the end.. peace out

The only time I would option 1 is if I know I did miss something and it was my mistake. Happened once and I was happy to refund $5 because it was my fault. I will always tell someone to return the item for a full refund if it's the same item and in the same condition. I will never do a partial If I did everything correctly. Just like you, I would make a video everytime someone tried to scam or or did scam. It's content for my channel but I also don't want to groom bad buyers into knowing how to circumvent the ebay system. I agree with what you did and I would do the same as you.

    After a relatively quiet
period, the 1st week in March was one return after another. Some were doesn't fit but most were defective scams. All of these items were in the $80-$120 range.
I required all to be returned to be inspected. 3 were clearly scammers. All 3 sent back broken or different items. Another was a false defective that was prefect. Another from an honest buyer that did not protect the item and was broken during return.
There are still 4 remaining returns unshipped. Another just showed up that I haven't looked at yet.
The bad ones were reported including an affidavit. Also some 50% maximum partial refunds for damages incurred.
I think the scams were premeditated from the beginning. These scammers know ebay is soft on buyers so they take advantage.
I require all items to be returned for authentication
by my own eyes in person.
Each item usually has a unique hidden mark or similar identifier.
I believe many of these wanna be scammers are just throwing these defective and not as described returns out there to see if they stick. Almost half of my returns this year were never returned and no refund issued. These are $100 plus or minus out of the buyers pocket.
If I had a legitimate return, I would sure as hell return it for a refund.

I NEVER give a partial refund. I have them return it and I pay for the shipping, no excuse. That is extortion and I would report them to eBay. I know eBay is a buyer platform but sellers need a way to give negative feedback on buyers and you can accept the sale or not based on their feedback. eBay will never allow this, but it really needs to happen to keep sellers from being screwed. At some point eBay has to pony up and demonstrate they actually work for the seller! I will lose money to get my item back because I know the condition of them.

Sounds like a "product switch" to me. Since you are having the item returned, inspect it and see if it has been switched and tell the community the buyer's name. eBay sellers can all work together by blocking further sales to this individual. I don't want to deal with this person if he is scamming sellers.

Great job, I can't stand people like this, and they need to be handled. I am currently taking one to small claims court for sending me back a different item for $849.95. Ebay automatically refunded them when the return arrived because they filed a SNAD. My appeals were denied more than 3 times and ebay wouldn't change their decision. I also offer free returns so I paid for their return shipping too.

might be an outlier but i recently got a rice cooker with a janky on/off button as in it wouldnt stay down in cook mode, took it up with the seller they offered 50% off the buy price came to $10 or around it. I was happy as it wasnt a dealbreaker as i just weighed it down and they didnt have to deal with the hassle of an unhappy customer then opening a return paying for a label etc.
Guess it just comes down to the $ amount if its worth the fight. Tbh in your case maybe a partial would have been the better option just down to the $ to time/effort ratio. But i totally understand why you decided to fight it, as it could/does breed a buyer abuse mentality if that makes sense, where if a shakedown works once why not try it again.

SCAM!! I would casually remind him (and eBay) that you have sold x-amount of these in the past, all thoroughly examined and described, also referring to photos of item that you presented. No partial refund, have him send it back and as long as you as the seller are satisfied that it is the same item with all parts enclosed than a refund would be send. However, eBay needs to be aware of what the guy's trying to pull. They should be aware that you, as a reputable seller, would never pull a switch or sell anything less than as described and photographed. It's never a waste of time when your integrity is being challenged. Stand your ground and stand up to the 'threat' as your reputation as an honest seller is on the line. He might continue to try scams on others, but report him and block.

Make sure you block the buyer first. I've successfully called the buyer's bluff before by telling him to return the item if he's not happy. He never returned it so I knew nothing was wrong with it. I think the partial refund comes from Amazon sellers often from China that want please their customer at any cost even on a $8 bluetooth mouse. Once they gave me a full refund without asking for it.

  • @Thetimecapsuletx

Tell him to mail it back and if it’s the same one that you sent and go-pro’ed the packing of each piece, you will refund him. Otherwise, the go-pro video will be sent to eBay and no refund.
I think if you accept returns, the return mailing fee will be on his nickel. That makes it even better.

1st. I rarely do patial refunds unless i can confirm it was my mistake. I say send it back. I eat the cost. I make my challenges after the return. You have a savvy thief. You can file for seller protection and get your money back...That is winning. $10 was the cheapest way out but sometimes you just want them to work for it. We just had a buyer send back the wrong pair of sunglasses. They said oops, will get correct pair out. Ebay showed the item returned and did an utomated return after days... Even with a conversation with the buyer and Ebay rep that we were working out the correct return they refunded it. We filed for seller protection and were made whole.

The day you get it back I would open an IC3 case and connect it to the INAD through customer service before you refund him his 50% if you're going to not fight the INAD case That way when he does a charge back, eBay has the police report of fraud being committed with the credit card by the holder. That they can use as evidence in the charge back case. I have heard of charge backs that have not only resulted in the sellers favor, but resulted in the credit card account getting cancelled due to a police report in evidence.

I am not a regular seller. However, a friend of mine is and I have my own small business. I stopped the video to comment before you describe what you end up doing. I would issue the partial refund and block the buyer from making purchases in the future knowing that he was being deceptive and trying to get one over on you. After that I would look at it as done and over with and try not to think or worry about it anymore beyond that point even though I won't lie that would probably bother me for a day or so in the back of my head. I was looking through the comments before posting the comment and also agree that I would attempt to report the customer to Ebay. I would tell them I issued the partial refund because my reputation means more than the $10 they are requesting but that you have a detailed process of inspecting items and taking pictures before selling each item you list and that this buyer is not being truthful and attempting to get items for less than their fair value through gaming the system knowing most sellers don't want their reputation damaged by something like this.

I live my life based on principle. So in this case, since this buyer has already received the item, if they do a chargeback then you should be able to fight it as they did the chargeback while still having the item in hand. What if this was a $190 item and they were asking for $100 back? IT'S NOT THE AMOUNT, IT'S THE PRINCIPLE. Let them do their chargeback as everything is recorded in the ebay messages where this scammer admitted that they have the item in hand and they are trying to scam you out of more than 50% of what you sold it for while having the item in hand. Plus, if they do ship it back then they are losing out on $$$ out of their pockets for shipping back the item and therefore it's more cost effective for the buyer just to keep the item and have it as Lesson Learned.

I was sure that my description was complete and accurate as I had sold hundreds of these hardware items, instead of showing any photos to back up his claim or file for a return he decided to chide me with an email exclaiming what a big baby I was for fighting his arguments with these options instead of refunding him ,sight unseen on case, he then posted the same comment in his feedback! I called ebay and they sided with me plus removed the feedback, maybe the best morale builder is winning even the small cases.

On one occasion I even cut and paste their message to me back to them. Best way to get even with these buying scumbags is by giving them a taste of their own medicine.

I have sympathy for you, but so many sellers poorly pack items and inflate the condition of items. As a result, buyers complain and can’t be asked to send items back. The comments on here make me reluctant to buy things on eBay. For every scammer, there are ten good buyers dissatisfied about receiving a poorly packed item. Sellers need to improve packaging and not ship in an envelope with no bubble wrap. You experienced sellers need to complain about poor sellers as well scammer buyers. As a buyer of books and video games, I now expect crappy packaging from most eBay sellers. As a result, I have stopped buying on eBay.

Give them the refund and kill with kindness. If they have one iota of decency they should feel like a piece of trash.
It really isn’t worth the time.
Also depends on how much Money we’re talking about.
    Refund then block.

red flag for sure sounds like he had the same clipper as well. sounds illegitimate, I'd just stop messaging him personally. Deal with whatever he throws at me.
