I think it was Pinhão, vale do Douro, where I ate at a nice restaurant with a beautiful view to the river and hills. 100% of the clientele was American. The food was expensive but mediocre. That’s the thing, when foreigners create bubbles, things become more expensive and the quality decreases. It didn’t feel I was in Portugal for a moment. I live in Covilhã and I enjoy a Serra da Estrela so much and the food is marvelous. There are lots of tourists which is good but not a bubble. I walked 3 miles from my hotel in Penhas Douradas to another hotel where I had lunch. I found friendly goats that came to greet me with bells and all. And two dogs that wanted to take me home. The food at the hotel was excellent and the view to the Serra magnificent. That was after my trip to the Vale do Douro. In contrast, I loved the Serra better for all the reasons I explained.

Simply amazing backdrop to the wonderful information in this video. The environment looks like something out of a travel magazine for the rich & famous and the food had me drooling. Being able to visit these areas in Portugal, as well as other areas in Europe, easily from Madeira is quite a blessing. Great planning to take advantage of the "off season" benefits.
