    Not going to lie, I hope her introduction to Huckleberry goes well, then they can be Huckleberry Pya (Pie)

    I've said it before, and I'll say it again: I appreciate that you tell us both the joys and trials of animal rescue. Some channels only want to show a soft focus on rescue, which gives an incomplete picture for people who are interested in going into rescue work, or who just think that a pet beaver (for instance) would be the best thing ever. Thank you!

  • @42by10
    @42by10 2 ปีที่แล้ว +46

    Much love to the people who found little Pya and recognized she needed help, and then doing everything they could to ensure she got it. Including recognizing that it would be better to release her to what they assumed was her wild family, videoing and then double checking with Animal Wonders to make sure it was the correct family, AND THEN getting Pya out of there when it was apparent she wasn't a part of that particular family. A lot of thought and care went into the safety of this little beaver the moment she was found!
    And it goes without saying; much love to Animal Wonders for getting Pya to the point she is now!

      Hear hear! There's not many people who would go to all the trouble of chasing down an available wildlife carer on a Friday night, then try to reunite her with a nearby beaver family _AND_ stay to check she was OK... let alone fish little Pya back out of the river when she wasn't OK & care for her until the experts arrived. Hikers - you are absolute legends!! 😎👍

    It’s so frustrating the limitations about crossing state lines. There’s a beaver rescue/rehab lady in New York who would have been willing to take a second one at the time of her first rescue but they couldn’t bring any across state lines and none in the state. I’m sure it’s the same now. It’s so much better when they’re raised with fellow kits…

    Jessi I want you to know that I recently started working at Petsmart in pet care and your videos have helped me educate people SO MUCH. I always make sure the animals at my store are pampered and cared for, and that anyone who comes in looking for a pet knows how to properly give them a healthy and happy life. I can refuse sale of an animal for any reason, and have quite a few times if I believe it's the wrong home for them (i spend so much time with them I get super protective!!). Thank you for being an educational ambassador for ALL animals and the people who love them ❤

Videos like this helps us understand the challenges of rescuing wildlife, and also shows how resilient you and your staff are, taking care of animals in need. I love that every photo of her on the scales she's in the same position, holding her treat with those adorable little paws & happily nom-nomming away - just ever-so-slightly bigger & healthier! Thanks for sharing her warts-&-all story of rescue & recovery to now... hopefully her human carers can take a breath & AWM can stand down from Animal Emergency Level 5 for a bit 🤎🐾
    _Edit: is the high number of orphaned kits this year unusual? (eg. an environmental issue) Or is there a seasonal rise in rescues every year?_

    In the intergalactic ranking of the most beautiful and cutest baby animals (I am the only one entitled to vote), the first is the baby prairie dog. There, this little beaver is easily positioned in 3rd place, because the second place is still the baby prairie dog (another one pup obviously, i'm not cheater).

    If you found her yourself and then happened upon the other beaver family, would you have done the same, or is there a safer way to find out if they were her family?

    • @animalwondersmontana
      @animalwondersmontana  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Comparing the size of the babies is a good first step. Also, just knowing that she was too small be even be able to get out of her lodge is a great indicator that she was displaced from her family, and if you don't see an adult beaver close to her then the likelihood that the parents were trapped is high. There is also the slight chance that a baby would be removed from the lodge at this young age if the parents think they are doing poorly. Sometimes I wonder if this is what happened with Huckleberry, but that's not something we'll ever know.

    To try to keep OSHA off your backs, including the vet....I know you can't always hold wild patients with the lead gloves, but the human hands directly in the x-ray beam are a huge no-no. Even inside the gloves, hands shouldn't be directly in the beam, the gloves are only meant to protect against scattered radiation outside the main beam. But, draping an empty glove over your hands will at least provide some protection. Ideally, you should be collumating the beam so that it covers only the part of the patient you need to see, in this case the chest, and your hands are safely out of the way. X-ray machines are made with dials to adjust the width and length of the beam, so you only irradiate the area you actually need to. A third person could be trained to collumate pretty quickly, put gloves over hands, and either step out of the room or duck behind one of the holders (and the lead apron they are presumably wearing) so you can quick take the image. I love all that you do, including your vet, and would hate to see any of you get in trouble!
    (And until then, cropping the image to only show the chest would at least avoid the OSHA problem...but the rules are there for very good reasons!)

    If you introduce Piya and Huckleberry, and they end up bonding, what will you do if you get a call back from a rehab center or zoo, saying they now have space? It's probably too late for her to be released, but do you think you would give her up to someplace else with more room, and save your space for a possible future beaver with a health condition?

    • @animalwondersmontana
      @animalwondersmontana  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      We'll do whatever is best for her ❤ A larger amount of space would for sure be good. Release is less and less likely the more she's habituated to humans and gets comfortable in front of more and more humans.
