- Piya the baby beaver needs a place to call home. Huckleberry the 4 year old beaver could use a companion. Will they be friends? Jessi shares how the introduction between Piya and Huckleberry went.

Her cries while trying to reach for Huckleberry were so sad, just a kid wanting some affection. I hope you're able to find somewhere for her soon!

They found one in Massachusetts - Justin.
Science North Ontario in Sudbury (Canada) lost their 20 year old beaver recently, and had a very large space for him. They may be willing to take Pia if they're still looking for a new beaver!

It's so sad that Huck doesn't accept baby Piya. I was hoping this arrangement would work out. Wishing you guys the best in finding Piya her permanent home soon.
He would have accepted her eventually. My 5-year old male cat was initially agressive towards the little female kitten I brought home, but they're cool with each other now.
@@SilentBudgie Not with the previous stray (with a potential visual impairment) male cat that my aunt has, though. He initially accepted the mom and kitten my mom rescued but then proceeded to become aggressive and territorial with them and every other cat and kitten that has come his way since. It might be the suspected disability that made him feel threatened as the kitten got older. It might be something else. The point is every animal is an individual, so you can't just think because things happened one way for your cat, it will happen that way for another animal.
That's so sad. Poor Pia, she so clearly wanted to be close to Huckleberry :(

Knowing her backstory likely involved the destruction of her lodge and potentially the death of her family, seeing that tiny beaver cry out and reach as soon as she saw another of her kind was one of the saddest things I've ever seen an animal do.

I know how much of a pain it is trying to introduce animals sometimes, and really sucks when they don't want to be friends despite it being good for them to have some companionship. I'm working through this again now with my last old rat and my new youngins

It's been a few days since this video was posted, so I know Jessi might not see this. But I wonder if there was maybe some protective behavior regarding Huckleberry getting his treats with Piya making a ruckus at the 2:47 mark or so. I read some of the comments and Jessi's replies from a couple of days ago. The food issue was most likely minor, if it was involved at all. But I've seen animals that were already buddies get a little hostile over food, a favorite toy, or even just jealous over who's getting attention at any given moment. A shame that it's clearly not going to work out. Add my best wishes for luck in finding Piya a new home where she'll be accepted by another of her kind.

Beavers are soo cute! It's so weird and cool that they are rodents!
I'm glad you walk us through the hard times as well. Life's not always easy but the process is what teaches us.
If Huckleberry hasn't seen another Beaver since he was little it makes sense he is not socialized and probably won't be. I recall another video of Huckleberry not liking Augusto all that much either. So clearly he's bonded to Jesse.
Cats & dogs always act huffy before becoming BFF - but I do know that rats are different, you usually know from the get go & if the chemistry isn't there then it only gets worse with continued exposure.

Awe too bad it didn’t work out, just goes to show that not all animals of the same species can be cohabbed. People stick unrelated pets together all the time and then are surprised when they don’t get along but they really do have their own personalities!

Poor little Piya-how heartbreaking.
I keep pet rats, so also social rodents. I've done 3 intros so far and it's so true that each animal is different. You never know what you're going to get. My first intro went a lot like this one. Thankfully, all the rats involved were bred for tameness and under a pound so it was easy to manage their conflict and keep everyone safe until they settled. I can't imagine trying it with giant rodents like beavers. I really respect them deciding not to push it when it became clear Huck wasn't having it. It is sad though.
That's a shame, but it is what it is.Its a frustrating part of looking after animals but an unavoidable one, that, like you said Jessi, even tho something might be in everyone's best interests, sometimes, one or all of the animals concerned veto the idea, putting you back to the drawing board. Poor lil baby....and poor Huckleberry too....it really would have been great had it worked out, for both of them.Id suspect it's a combination of Huckleberry's lack of beaver socialisation, his acclimatisation to living alone and maybe his sight issues making him a little more defensive? Anyway it was a good try. Hopefully you'll find a good home with other beavers for the baby.
I thought it might be a sight/neurological issue, too. Poor Piya.

2:47 - is Huck hissing?
Yes, he was really uncomfortable being so close to her and was hissing a warning to her not to get closer to him. She completely ignored his communications as she's just a baby and just wanted to be with another beaver so badly.
@@animalwondersmontana I didn't know beavers hissed. This is so heartbreaking. I really hope she gets the family she so desperately craves.
The size difference is ridiculous! I don't think there are beavers where I live and I've never ever see one, but holy cow they get huge!

I am wondering if it would have been easier to introduce them after Piya is grown up? 🤔 I can understand that Huck would be more aggressive toward a grown beaver, but a female beaver in heat must surely be irresistible? 😍 Of course there is still the issue of where to raise her to maturity so this wouldn’t really solve anything, I am just curious 😊

Use a realistic beaver look-a-like to accustom the 4 year old to other beavers? Robot beaver. The videos of robot camera animals are always accepted by the wild ones.

A beaver's best sense is his sense of smell. So Huckleberry would've know her blindfolded, like your dog knows you from your scent.

It's an interesting question of how far you push it. I've seen some pet rat introduction videos that were way more forceful about putting them together.
I would wait a month or two because he was probably thinking this is not my child, and when she is one or two they will get along.

I saw a video were three kids were so happy to get to camp causebit meant beaver tail. Never knew people ate beavers and it was disturbing seeing these kids eating beaver.

Beavers are very family oriented. They find a mate and stay with them for life and their young live with their parents for 2 years!

Oof, Huckleberry is 45lbs and Piya only 4lbs. You're actually right that some animals need some space and time to figure each other out and you have to let them have some skirmishes. In this case we couldn't let Huckleberry bite her or even hit her with his head or tail since he could cause serious injury and beavers are really rough to those they don't like. He did try to do all of those things to her, but we were able to prevent her from getting harmed by using the barrier and intervening when we saw him getting worked up when we did the free contact trials.

A story especially written for Shelia Rogers:
How beavers got their flat tails.
This story takes place many hundred years after paradise closed. At this time beavers lived close to humans and had round plushy tails. When babies cried a beaver came and tickled them under their nose with their soft plushy tails - and the babies smiled and fell asleep, dreaming of their beaver friends.
At this time God kept a hidden little door open for very kind and helpful people. They could visit their dead friends and relatives in paradise through this door sometimes in the afternoons.
One of the Angels observed over the centuries more and more humans entering paradise through that door for a visit. The Angel got upset. They thought: "God did not intend to let people back into paradise. We must do something about this before paradise gets too crowded and people start trouble again."
The Angel spoke with the other Angels and they decided to close and lock the little door that evening for all time.
Now a beaver had overheard the Angels speak. The beaver was very worried. Wouldn't their human friends be very sad if they couldn't visit their dead friends and family any more?
The sun was already setting and the Angels waited for the last humans to return so they could lock the hidden door to paradise forever.
There was no time to call a human friend. So this courageous little beaver stuck their soft plushy tail beneath the door, where the Angels couldn't see it. And when the Angels tried to close the door the beautiful plushy tail of the little beaver got terribly flattened and the beaver started screaming in pain - but the Angels couldn't close the hidden door however hard they tried.
God - wherever they were in their infinite wisdom - heard the screaming of the little beaver and it took God less than a breath to appear before the Angels.
God lifted the little beaver to their heart and held them close so they wouldn't feel pain any longer. Then God listened to the Angels carefully.
God looked for a moment into the future which held millions and millions and even more millions of people. God sighed a little sadly and decided the Angels had a point.
With a touch of God's infinite mind the little door disappeared as if it had never been.
With a look of God's immeasurable mind the Angels became invisible to the human people.
With a breath of God's immortal mercy human people started to visit their dead friends and family in their dreams and forgot the little door to paradise ever existed in the first place.
Finally God turned all their mind towards the little beaver resting at God's heart peacefully. Like a dream the words entered the beavers heart and soul: "You have shown great kindness and friendship towards our human children. We want to leave you with a sign to remember your great courage. We will leave your tail as it is now, flattened from the door to paradise, all plushness gone. - But with that new form of your tail we will give you a new responsibility: travel and live across the world, live on land and in water, build homes like you have seen our human children build them. Protect our human children from flood - for now."
And thus the beaver happened to get a flat hardened tail. Millions and millions and even more millions of years have passed. Most humans and most beavers have forgotten about the courage of one little beaver keeping a hidden door to paradise open with a soft plushy tail.
I know and I remember and now you know and remember, too!

What if they're both afraid of you or Taylor being there and Huckleberry is aggressive because of you but knows that you will beat him in any fight so he takes the aggression tards Paya. I really hope you get this comment.
