  • We recovered this broken down old Caterpillar D2 Bulldozer in a New Zealand forest a while ago. There was water in the engine oil so we stripped it down to investigate, suspected blown head gasket.
    We discovered multiple issues...

    This is one of those awkward moments when you have to admit to yourself you are getting more excited watching this than a 100 million dollar film.
    When you wish you were there, with a few mates,a few beers, and a BBQ,putting the world to rights and exercising your minds and hands.
    The awkward moment is admitting that the age you got to now, you get more excitement out of watching a liner "pop" out, than the bare body of some starlet, or the villain spraying the room with bullets.
    Am i getting old or is this just the best therapy? Thanks, and on the edge of my seat waiting!

    When I was in the military, back right after the Three Wise Men came through, I ran a diesel generator repair shop and we were brought in an ancient Cat that had to be fixed by Monday. I pointed out that we repaired diesel generators and this thing was a dozer. The Commander pointed out that he did not have a dozer repair shop but he did have me. By the time he left he had convinced me that if that dozer wasn’t fixed by 0800 hours on Monday I would be working on it as it was being delivered by a C-130. We got it done 0445 hours Sunday. What you guys are doing in the middle of no where is unbelievable. My hats off to you.

    Can't wait for Part 3. You guys are certainly putting in the work on this one. But a good old piece of heavy equipment is almost always worth it. Good thing I wasn't paying really close attention when that liner came out of I probably would have needed to check my pants, lol. Also I love seeing assemblies that utilize castle nuts, cotter pins, safety wire, etc. Safety measures that help to ensure that in the event of a failure that damage is as minimal as can be.

    Hello Marty. We do a lot of cylinder heads. We have a tool that goes in the stand drill for extracting the valves. You can expect anything with something that age. There's still some oil about it.

    Good catch any old Cat is a fun project, can get deep in the pocket . I really hope you got new or good used valves and had the seats done on #2 cyl. The state of that seat needs to be replaced. Will not seal!! you will have skip or missing cyl. It is a lot easier to jack the back of the tractor up about 14 in or so, block under the tracks at the sprocket. Then jack the front up level. Good luck.

    Well you have done good so far even if cat mechanics are in convulsions right now from methods you have used to get this far. I certainly am not going to fault your methods. I know how and had tools to do all this but from the many years removed from working (crippled in injury fifteen years ago) don't have a good working memory of some of these type liners. So working the field many years ago and without proper tools available (doing same as you) I have installed new liners with the piston and rings inside the liner and shoved the better one (not new) but when I did it, I made sure that the piston was lined up with the crank so to just draw it down over the shaft so cap could go on. I have replaced bearings by removing the covers on the side and replacing them the hardest way possible from other engines that were parts cause we needed the machine, we were dirt poor, we didn't have a choice. and I mean eat beans poor for weeks till I found game to go with beans. The three of ate twelve deer, a few birds an over two hundred pounds of beans. Hungry, no problem, build fire and boiled beans for hours and grind or chunk up game. A few wild onions in the spring added flavor but...... I said but didn't I? Well that was next as it was a natural tonic an I crapped behind every tree on the island. On top a few stumps to get even with the crows that circled our food we had and stole from us so just giving them a taste of their own medicine!! Use some vaseline to lube the rubber seals so they go all the way in. On the Cummins engines we heated the oil to almost boiling to get pistons apart and back together (heated the pistons in the oil that was very dangerous as it could of blown us to hell and back but no backing down and no going home, and we got the cat running and made our first float for town. Yeah that was the early sixties and we were poor and the game not doing much better but at least they had tree boughs to eat. I tried some wild stuff in woods but turpentine just isn't on the menu as a must try. Took that one off my bucket list!! Going to town in our least dirty clothes that were rags by then wasn't so bad for us as we got acclimated to the smell but the pilot flew with frost on his eyelids and fresh air vents open. We all walked in to the "Outfitters" in ketchikan and took our clothes off and donned fresh bath robes and then picked out new stuff to be sent to the hotel foolish enough to rent to us. The guests in other rooms complained of a foul odor coming in the rooms but we were in tubs by then!! That hotel told us if we left, they wouldn't charge us for that room but I just smiled and said menu please.... every word true

      @@c1d2e So I would "b" zero to keep numbers in the row. I had someone take oral notes and cassette tapes once. I found that magistrates don't take to well being woke up after midnite cause drinking courage doesn't bide well with the hellcat I married and trying to tell in a nice way that everything has a reason... so out on my tail and headed to a hotel when my method of using Ray Charles brail to go from where b was, as I had made it from a to b and now headed for c when using the speed bumps on the side of the road didn't bide well to that trooper who decided to run interference so he being the new sheriff in town when he polished his patrol car up an was way too serious. After he had used his bullhorn in my ear for how long I couldn't tell you, but I just got tired of it and told our little " Barney Fiffe to hold it down" and then he got brave and smacked me in the chops with his flashlight and told me "we were going to jail" an I ask him for separation papers. I told it wasn't "we" that had this little plan he was so proud of. I'll be staying at the crowbar hotel and he would be back taking us criminals in and saving his girl from being killed by me. So I reached in my pocket and threw a wad of money in front of him and said, "go get a date with a real girl instead of Raggedy Ann"!! So he added it to the charge of driving while "Heavily influenced " he wrote Bribery! I kept my mouth shut by then, as I wasn't going to get out before kids graduate from college. More time than I wanted to invest. So when he marched me back to holding he screamed to get in, in his bullhorn again and so, I shoved it in his face and thats how I met the judge! Well that guy did write a book which was never published. I never got a dime but time to talk to counsel. Helped do the time is all. I kinda thought he was a friend. Turns out he was in it for money only and some were published in reader's digest but I never saw anything. When you get old, well that is what you get. Full of tails of the southeast an old. The D2 was a very well made machine, I restored a 1938 5J model 25 years ago that had broken down beside the coast 20 years before. I had to move it a few years ago but could not get the donkey engine to start, my solution was to connect the front pto on a tractor to the rear pto on the D2 & used the clutch to engage for starting, worked a treat 👌

    Aaaah, such an treat and refreshment to watch people talking with a normal accent.
    I predict the engine will be running like shit considering the valve seats and valve seat face condition. Lapping won’t do if perfection is the aim.
    No lapping in the world can fix that.

    • @nathansihlis4866
      @nathansihlis4866 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree. Apparently it runs ok now but I doubt it will be good in the long run. These old low RPM, low compression, low hp engines arent fussy but that cylinder is going to have a severely hampered lifespan.
