  • WILL IT START!? 1950s Caterpillar Dozer BARN FIND!
There has been a 1950's Caterpillar D6 cable dozer tucked back in the barn for YEARs and today we give it some attention to see if we can get not one, but TWO engines going. The pony motor needs to start so we can get this piece of American Engineering up and running and hopefully some day soon - push some dirt with it!

A couple more points on the benefit of a pony motor. You correctly said that it heats the inlet manifold with the exhaust, but that is just to help the engine to fire in the cold. The pony also shares the water with the main engine so it will heat the main block after a time. The pony can have a two speed gear and the low gear can be used when the block is so cold that the oil is too thick for normal starting, perhaps in the Arctic. When warm then change to high gear.
The other very important thing is that these main engines should only start when full oil pressure is reached after it has been turning over for some time on decompression. This is why they last so long when treated correctly!

When I was a kid my job early in the morning was to start the dozers to prepare for the day's work building roads. The d6 did finishing work and chokered out the logs and the d7 prepared the ground pushing out the big rocks and tree stumps. The d7 was a much harsher ride bucking over big rocks and such but as easy as the 6 to start.

That was nice of Steve to help you get it going, he seemed to really enjoy it also. Good to see a young guy get some old iron rolling. Used to drive one of those when it was -30 with what they call an Heater Houser that would contain the hot air off the engine and blow back towards you to help keep you from freezing. It was by no means warm but at least you didn't turn into a popsicle.

@@iowANFarmer Moving snow on mountain roads for logging. Back in the days this country had a logging industry. Thanks to the tree huggers we no longer have that and lost all control of being able to control some of these wild fires. Because the fuel load had built up so heavy. When we logged, we controlled the fuel load by harvesting trees and kept our forests much healthier than they are today!

FOR SAFETY ON YOUR CATERPILLAR. Always before you get off of it make sure it is in neutral and pull or engage the clutch. When I was 11 I just about died when I started it because it was in gear. I threw the decompression switch and it started and engaged the clutch and I went for a ride.

As a CAT employee for 25 years, this vid put a smile on my face... and the best part was the "mouse clean-out" .. funny stuff..

Pretty cool. One of your funniest videos especially when you opened the air cleaner. The first dozer I ran was an old cable D9 one thing to keep in mind is when lifting the blade be careful not to lift to high because if you put to much pressure on the blade stops you can break the cable. Great job and have fun.

I didn’t read through all the comments but one thing I didn’t see you check is coolant. The pony motor uses the same coolant as the big motor so if it’s low you could overheat the pony
