- PART 2!!!
In this video, we're taking on the challenging task of rebuilding a Ford Transit Connect 1.5 TDCi engine after a catastrophic timing belt failure that resulted in a smashed head. We'll take you through the process step-by-step, from diagnosing the issue to the final reassembly of the engine.
One of the biggest obstacles we encountered during this repair was the fact that 8 out of the 10 head bolts snapped off, requiring us to drill them out. We'll show you how we tackled this difficult problem and provide some tips and tricks for dealing with broken bolts.
Throughout the video, we'll provide insightful commentary on the entire process and highlight key steps that are important to get right. We'll also share some best practices for preventing future timing belt failures and head damage.
If you're a Ford Transit Connect owner or just a car enthusiast looking to learn more about engine repair, this video is a must-watch. Don't forget to use the following #tags when sharing this video on social media: #FordTransitConnect #EngineRepair #BrokenBolts #TimingBeltFailure #HeadRebuild.

Nice video . Much better the way you show it rather than time lapse.👍
Thanks tony! I thought I would try and see what people think 🤔 thanks for watching😊
Got a new subscriber mate !! Awesome vid
Thank you I really appreciate it 👍
Great video I enjoyed seeing the job start to finish very well explained and very interesting thankyou 👍
Thanks Tim I really appreciate it 😁
Great vid !
My belt snapped 2 weeks ago Just did mine myself 2 days graft
On the drive way , 1 x smashed rocker. So I replaced all the rockers and cam + timing belt+ water pump and drive belt
Started straight away just got to put all the plastics together tomorrow and take for test drive 🙏
Cost £600 all in for parts and all tools I needed
Was getting quotes between 1-2k+
Nice work, you got away lucky with no bent valves then, cos that’s when you have to take the head off and it cost goes up to them sorts of prices 👍
Excellent video Ty so much I have an 18 plate and getting belt and tensioner changed today in case this happens , had a mate with 17 plate do exactly what happened in your video, so going to cross my fingers same don’t happen after getting belt and tensioner changed at 79 k
Thank you I really appreciate it! As long as you keep up with the maintenance you should be good 👍 extra oil change mid way through the year is what I suggest also, good luck
great job in first video everyone hates transit now
Let’s hope so ! 😂
Thanks so much for quick response - they have replaced the engine each time - I had to pay for the last one and they want me to pay for this one - the one invoice does say 're-new' engine but I am not sure what this means - but they did issue new VIN numbers each time - I just cannot understand how a timing belt can fail 3 times in 180,000kms - second time they had to replace 6 injectors as well
Yes it does sound a little odd to me, maybe have an independent garage take a look at it for a second opinion? Or think about a new vehicle so you don’t have this issue again ? Sorry if I can’t be more help
Hi interesting video, just had this happen to me , Transit Connect 1.5 tdci , where are you based for repair ?
Hey 👋 my email is in my bio if you want to send me one 👍
Great video just the right length. Show all the stages and explain where your at . My boys focus 1.5 diesel just stopped. The AA guy said maybe belt and oil pump? Was contemplating doing it for him but after watching this I think I’ll give it a miss.
Na defo give it a go you might have no issues and it all go to plan! Good luck 🤞
Just got it back from the garage. Had to pay the bill for him £3745.00
@@MrAutoFixer wish I had they made a right pigs ear blaming turbo, belt, tensioner and after putting it back together with wonky cams it wouldn’t run right. 🙄🤬
Oh wow sounds like you should have sent it my way! I would have sorted it out for ya! Hope you don’t have any more problems going forward! And wow that’s a large bill to swallow !!!!
new subscriber loved the video love the small jobs
Thanks for the sub!
Hi buddy great videos, I wonder if you have ever experienced rocker arms not being bolted down, I had some work done on my Ford transit connect mk2 1.5 tdci ecoblue on a 68 plate, it was becoming extremely noisy, rattling and hesitation.
on inspection a injector needed replacing, but worryingly two rocker arms where found to have been left sitting without any bolts installed, the van had a new engine installed by main dealer, under warranty 15000 miles ago.
I don’t really understand much about engines, but watching your videos are extremely beneficial, and gives me a better understanding of my van, which now sounds sweet again with a new injector and some bolts.
Hey thanks for watching, I can’t say over ever had that experience with the bolts missing, sounds like when the engine was reconditioned they may have forgot them bolts as I would imagine if they had come out and gone inside the engine you would have much of the inside left working lol 😂
Glad it’s is all back on the road and running well hopefully it stays that way for a while 👍
Spot on video very helpful I was just wondering if you could give me the torque settings for head bolts
Hi for my engine my process was
Stage 1: 20nm
Stage 2: 40nm
Stage 3: 260 degrees
Hope that helps 👍
New viewer here as I'm thinking about buying one of these for my courier business. I now feel slightly apprehensive in getting one.
Great video buy the way. It does sound little guy was lucky. Although I suspect the bill was still high
Defo a great little van for a work vehicle, as long as you have good history with it and keep on top of the maintenance I don’t see why it would last, or if you do get one when you have the belt done just have a new modified cam fitted at the same time for peace of mind ? 👍 thanks for watching 😊
MrAutoFixer
Whenever I buy a new van for work I always get the cambelt & water pump changed asap just for peace of mind. Is there problems with the wet belt on transit connects or is it just the transit customs
@leechi001 hey any wet belt engine will be a problem if it’s not been maintained correctly with the right oil etc, as long as it has and you change the belt when it’s recommended or before then you should be good 👍
This happened to mine too at 91,000 what was the difference in price new or recon engine to your super rebuild
I think at the time to have a new engine would have cost about 5k and the rebuild was about half that I don’t know how much they are now? 👍 thanks for watching
@MrAutoFixer that video was brilliant how long did it take to rebuild it looks like mines the same
@richardtaylor3400 if I was on it and had all the parts to hand would take about 3-4 days but still have to wait for the head to be skimmed so I don’t that one over a good week can be done quicker if you don’t have all the head bolts break lol 😂
Excellent videos this has judt happened to me 😢 the garage is picking it up tomorrow - mine is still trying to fire up . Belt is slack though 😮 worse case how much would i be looking at . Same van as that
Worst case rebuild prob about £2500-3000 mate
Brilliant video. Just had this happened to mine. One damaged valve. Just rebuilt it and put it back together, wont start. Not sure if cam timing 180 out or cam lobes have moved. Probably should of replaced cam shaft but it all looked ok.😢
Oh yes you defo need to replace the cam that is the main cause of failure when the lobes spin on the shaft, once you replace that should be all good 👍
@MrAutoFixer Appreciate the reply, I'll put a new cam in and hopefully that works. Another cheeky question. Do you know the cam position when the crank pin is in. As I know It can be 180 degrees out. Should of just given it to you to fix in the first place. 😂
@davidnewman5807 it’s always good to have a go yourself. I think you get that good sense of accomplishment when you fix it and have you watched part one of the video. I think I’ve had some other comments about the timing in that video saying you can pause the video and check all the timing marks and the angle of the cam lobes etc, have a look at that one and let me know if you need anything else. Cheers
@MrAutoFixer Hi, just wanted to say thanks for the advice. Replaced the cam and it started first time. When I compared the old and new cams. 4 of the lobes were in different positions so you was spot on. Really appreciate your help.
@davidnewman5807 excellent 👌 glad I could help, the new cam you fitted should be a modified solid one so you won’t have that problem again 👍
Would you recommend need head bolts when changing head gasket and what size socket is it please
Hey I think those ones were M12 Ribe if I remember right, and yes Change head bolts every time they are undone as they are stretch bolts 👍
@@MrAutoFixer many thanks
@bobfraser565 no worries 👍
I have a vauxhall grand x wet timing belt need one done on that
Yes mate nice and easy 👌
Thank you
You're welcome
Great job! I am just about to replace the timing belt and water pump on my van, which is the exact same model as yours. I typically change the belt and pump every 60k miles, and so far I haven't had any issues. I'm wondering if the problem you experienced was due to the fact that the belt hadn't been replaced until 95k miles, or if it was replaced with some no-name parts.
My Transit Connect, currently has 165k miles on it. I changed the belt and pump for the first time at 50k miles, then at 105k miles and now I'm about to do the third change at 165k miles. To be honest, every time I've changed the belt before, I haven't noticed any problems like what you experienced. I am always using INA kit belt + pump.
Thanks Artur! The problem with my one was the cam itself the lobes had moved on the cam as they are pressed on originally, there was a recall for them but my one wasn’t done, now it’s got a new better cam should be fine now.
Sounds like your doing well with the maintenance on your van and hopefully it goes on for many more miles 😊
Good job mate what year was there van.?
It was a 2017 67 reg 👍
@@MrAutoFixer thanks do you know ? 2011 plate has the same engine do you know as the one in that video you’re just done ?
I wouldn’t know without looking at your engine and/or looking up the reg. this engine is in a lot of vehicles.
As soon as the guy send me the picture I’ll forward it to you thanks dude
That’s what the guy sent me 🤷♂️
I’ve got the same exact van on an 18 plate no problems as of yet, how much am I looking at for a cambelt and water pump change?cheers
Hi 👋 depends on where you get it done but expect around £400 ish
What year was this connect? I’ve been told my 70 plate 1.5 hasn’t got a wet belt. Is this correct?
This one was a 2017 reg
I would double check urs with the dealer and check if it had a wet belt or not 👍
@@MrAutoFixer thank you👍🏻
Hi mate great video, we've just put my wife's van in the stealers as it had similar problems to this, it has a camshaft position malfunction code but is still running, but very noisy like the timing is out, my question is will there be damage or will a new belt tensioner and water pump likely be all it needs ? It's sounding like there is a theme on these vans it's only 6 years old and has 90k on the clock
Hey 👋 sorry to hear your having issues!
It’s the cam lobes that move on the shaft, so if it’s still running then you should defo get away with some new cams and a belt and pump no problem! That’s if that is the issue of course? Let me know how you get on 👍
Thanks mate 👍
@MrAutoFixer only happened on Thursday not been in for diagnostic by the garage yet I got the codes with my reader only code was the camshaft position sensor, replaced it obviously and nothing changed but I'm stumped how this has occurred could it have jumped a tooth on the belt ? Wife said it just happened as she was crawling along at 25 ??
@@smudgenav yes it could have jumped a tooth hopfully it hadn’t done any damage and you can just have the minimum changed to get it back on the road! That’s the dream
😂 defo mate the wife's still gutted cost 300 a week for a hire van !!
Hi, do you know what position the crank should be in when the cam is locked? I made a mistake today of removing the crank pulley which isn’t on a keyway and can’t find where the crank should be anywhere. Have ordered a fluywheel locking tool but can see a mark on the flywheel
If you get cylinder 1 to TDC which should only be a small turn clockwise of the crank if you undone it with a gun, then should be able to fit the locking tool, when you finally get the belt on just make sure you turn it over by hand a few times. 👍
Thank you 🙏 I’ll try that In the morning
@carregtredwell9129 let me know how you get on 👍
Can I just ask - the timing belts on my Ford Transit Connect 1.5 TDCi have gone 3 times at 60 000km intervals - could the timing belt failure damage the turbo or the clutch - the first 2 times Ford suggested I put a new clutch in whilst the engine was out and now the 3rd time I want a bit of info before dealing with Ford - 2nd & 3rd time out of warranty
Hi 👋 thanks for reaching out, I would find it highly unlikely that the cam belt failure would affect the clutch at all and as for the turbo only if a bit of debris had managed to get into it some how but again unlikely, so when the belt goes is it because of the cam lobes spinning each time ? What exactly are Ford replacing when they fix it ?
I'm driving one of these vans for about 30k miles with the battery light on. My boss says is no problem 😂😂just carry on on
Well if that’s what the boss says then your all good lol 😂
Just to let you know, van broke down the other day, loss of power and loud knocking noise. Mechanic says needs new engine. Boss not happy 😂😂
Hahah ooops ! 😂😂😂
I have same model mine has broken down had no power the came up engine malfunction then broke down with engine light on hoping this isn’t my problem lol 119k miles
Hi Lee, best way to check would be to take the top Cambelt cover off and check to see if the belt is ok first, fingers crossed for you it’s nothing too serious!
@@MrAutoFixer thanks mate already sent it to garage on recovery truck the codes I got on reader were all to do with a vacuum leak and Maf sensor so hopefully it’s to do with that P2279,P1102,P0229 we’re codes
Was the timing belt snapped on my van mate garage said needs new cam rockers and belt kit should be fine 450
I used to love Diesel engines, now I hate them.
There not all bad really, but not simple things anymore either! 👍
@@MrAutoFixer I would rather have an inline pump and the ability to adjust phasing and spill timing, with injectors that can be removed without a fight and injector seals that actually seal, as opposed to all the unreliable, unnecessary electronic crap, fitted today. And don't forget the dual mass flywheel, the answer to a problem that didn't exist !
@p.istaker8862 well said ! And yes dual mass flywheel 😂 what an invention! But them simple days are long gone now I’m afraid 😧
Plastic sump, what a piece of junk
You don’t like plastic ???
Is it just me or is Ford's more trouble than they are worth?
Na all cars have their issues, I do love a Ford most days lol 😂
