  • In this video I borrowed my friend's Leica Q for a weekend and shot digital after many years of only shooting on film. What is my verdict - will I stick to film or convert to the dark side of digital photography?

    What a fun video, I like how you didn't take it too serious and had fun with it. Your experiences mirror mine, I take a lot more pictures when shooting digital but at the end of the day I think I have the same number of good ones. I enjoy the analog experience more, so that's what I do when shooting for fun. If I know I'll have difficult shooting circumstances, then I'll use my digital.
    Keep up the good work!

    I think shooting film has given me an appreciation for digital. I shoot film for the look and enjoyment of the process, but I wouldn't give up the autofocus, metering, convenience, and (free) price of shooting with my DSLR. It's a strange spot for us born in the 90s, where we only had film as kids, but then digital when we were young enough to master it.

      I mean even as a child of the 00s, I grew up with tape based camcorders and 35mm film cameras (including my dad's SLR which I did shoot a lot of colour film on for of course no cost to me lol, of which around 0 photos were even good) but when I went back to film I had not shot it in about a decade, though I definitely am not returning to video 8 camcorders...

    Wieder echt gute shots. 👌 Nachdem Ulysses Aoki eine Reperaturrechnung von über 3300$ für seine Q-P bekommen hat ist mir jegliche Lust an kauf einer digitalen Leica vergangen. Wenn eine Q kaputt geht kannst du die gleich in die Tonne kloppen und dir eine neu gebrauchte holen. ist günstiger als die Reparatur zu bezahlen bei Leica. 😅

    I can really relate to your experience. I recently got a Fuji XPro3 and have been shooting a lot on it instead of my regular Pentax K1000 set up. It's true I tend to be more sloppy with composition and get a bit trigger happy. I used to shoot maybe a roll on a walk when I shot a lot and ended up with more usable pictures. Now I'm shooting up to a thousand and get only two or three thar I'm happy with, it's been an very weird transition for sure.

    • @KarinMajoka
      @KarinMajoka  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This sums it up pretty well actually! I also feel like my "hit rate" is higher on film, even though I shoot less. Also, I really really hated to go through all of the digital files to see which ones I want to keep. Only having 36 images makes the selection process way easier.

    Just watched your great video. I thought your summation was right on track. One thing that has kept me from getting the Q or SL digitalis is that they are TTL cameras as opposed to my digital and analog Leica M cameras which are range finders. It really does make a difference in composition and you do not have that "sloppy" ness you mentioned. The Q and does have the advantage of macro, autofocus and fast image turn-over time for workflow but from what you said at the end I'd recommend a digital M. They are expensive (even used), I had to save 4 years for mine (M-D Type 262, the one without a screen in the back) but feels very much like my M2 and I LOVE to shoot with it. Since I loss my access to a darkroom it has been go to.

    I do both as well. Digital with a D750, which is great for family, digital panorama and everything which is astro photography related, analogue with the Xpan, Mamiya 6 and many others. All cameras have their purpose and it would not be very smart to not use advantages.

    Damn, could've joined you, lots of nice spots in Hamburg. :) I don't really think the Q suits you, despite the focal lenght and somewhat boring digital colors I think the Q is more of a statement than a tool, but I'm biased and only buying used gear anyway since I know it will be obsolete in 5-10 years and I'm no dentist. :)
    If you want to try another digital camera, I'd also suggest a Fuji - maybe even used and with a manual focus lens, which you can get for about a tenth of the Leica's price. You'll feel right at home with the dials, probably even more so than with the Leica, and maybe you'd prefer those film simulations over digital cleanliness?

    Nice one Karin! I'm working sincerely to use film like I do digital. Honestly, most of my time is spent on editing on the comp, which is the same process either way. The time difference is not exponential. Both take me impossibly long! The results are so different though. I'm still not sure which results I prefer. Dear Karin, nice and entertaining video. Actually I am always out with two set, one digital one analog. Digitally I prefere a medium format Fuji GFX 50R and I love to combine it with an old Minolta vintage lense. Since those old lenses do not have autofocus it comes really close to the analog feel. As to shooting digital, I never surrendered my film cameras when digital came about in the 2000's and have just ended up shooting both. Digital for when 'you just need to get the shot', film for when you want to 'think about the composition and concentrate on basics'......a combination of both works for me.

  • @carltanner9065
    @carltanner9065 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think that digital can make you lazy and just spray and pray when it comes to taking pics. You can rattle off so many photos in such a short time and you end up with thousands of rubbish pics you never look at again. All just to get that one shot. That's one of the reasons I went back to film. I can take my time and get the shot I want, get it right and not have to deal with heaps of waste. What I've found that in going back to film, it's rubbed off onto my digital pics. I don't rattle off heaps of shots and I take my time to get the shot I want. I end up using my digital cameras like my film ones. Means I don't have to wade through masses of files and waste too much time sitting at a computer sorting through them all. And, whilst digital images can look good, they don't have the feel of a film pic. At least, that's what I believe.

    • @KarinMajoka
      @KarinMajoka  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That point of having a lot of "data garbage" was also my biggest issue when shooting digital. It was just no fun at all to look through all of the files, especially since I think my "hit rate" was about the same as when shooting less images on film. I think adjusting your shooting style to shoot more like film and be more selective is a good approach - however, when it's so easy to snap away it might be tricky to not use it.

      I am trying to not spend too much time in the dangerous territory, because I might end up with a digital camera afterwards for real haha. But the Fuji X100 systems have indeed been interesting, so maybe I will try it out one day. :)

    I must admit to preferring digital for color and also for shooting indoors. I once made the mistake of thinking I could shoot a small concert on a Yashica Mat. The results were not pretty, even with Delta 3200. Have you considered old lenses on a digital body? You could use you Leica glass.

    • @KarinMajoka
      @KarinMajoka  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I shot a concert on film once as well and it was pretty challenging - so I see why digital might come in handy in those super low light situations. I actually have a Sony A7II with some adapters for vintage lenses, but somehow I never use. 🤔

    I don't know if it's the camera (Leica are not known for their snappy AF...) but unfortunately almost all of your pictures are blurry.

    • @KarinMajoka
      @KarinMajoka  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Almost all of them? I count four blurry images in total. And that was most likely a user error by me and not the camera's fault since you have to keep in mind that I used this camera for the first time. I think it's more than normal to have a couple of blurry or out of focus shots in a session regardless of the camera brand or medium used. I wanted to keep it realistic and leave them in - also the rest of the images is tack sharp and I feel like you can zoom in forever and still have a crisp image. So please don't exaggerate :)

    • @gibcoprobe66
      @gibcoprobe66 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@KarinMajoka Karin, I'm a big fan of your channel and your work so I'm not trolling. But I have to keep it real, the pictures are blurry my dear and simply not your best work. But if you find them crisp, that's what matters, isn't? But I know I'm not exaggerating. Each timeI saw a shot, I was quite surprised...

    Was für eine hässliche Kamera, grässlich! Eine Fuji x100F ist um Welten hübscher, kann vieles besser, ist mehr Analog-Kamera-Like und mit ihrem Zentralverschluss dann auf jeden Fall die fotografisch interessantere Kamera, als das super hässliche Ding von Leica, Sorry!
    Oder vielleicht allgemeiner eine Fuji X Kamera mit Adapter und deine M-Objektive verwenden. Allein das manuelle fokussieren bremst einen schon zum bewussten sehen und fotografieren ein. Zusammen mit den X-Trans-Sensoren und außergewöhnlich gutem Auto-ISO Verhalten wäre so eine Wahl vielleicht eine gute Ergänzung?

    • @KarinMajoka

      Geschmäcker unterscheiden sich bekanntlich ja - ich finde die Q um ehrlich zu sein nämlich ganz ästhetisch 😉 und sie hat übrigens auch einen Zentralverschluss.

    I think the 100 comments here already covered this a lot, but I'll add my voice to the crowd anyway.
    Whenever I shoot digital, I take too many photos. It's so easy to take the same photo from 5 angles, and each one twice just incase, and then you need to look through 100s when you get home. In all honesty I love the efficiently and security of digital, but I just don't find it as fun or rewarding compared to checking your negatives and realising you got the shots you wanted.
    (also the PQA intro ended up being really funny anyway 😆)
