    Great video and wonderful pics!
    I’ve been going through basically all of the available q2 vids on YT because I’m thinking about picking up a used q2 and this was one of the best by far.
    One thing - the manual focus is by wire (electronic) and not true mechanical, though I hear that it’s fabulously executed.
    Again, wonderful work. 💥

    Another great video Nick. There are many talented photographers in the world, but you are that rare beast that seems to be master of multiple photographic genres eg street, landscape, events, travel. I purchased a Q2 just prior to the global lockdowns and I can sincerely say I have never loved a camera so much. Obviously the most important element to produce a good photograph is the the photographer; however this camera seems to be the first camera I have used, which manages to make me look like a better photographer. I look forward to attending one of your courses in the near future.

    Great review from a user pov. Q2 owner here. In fact, I got mine from Leica Australia. Loving it. Regarding the 42MP sensor, one of the surprise is the huge file size. Coming from a RX1rii, a compressed raw option (with a new fw update?) will be awesome. If well implemented, that will alleviate some of the issues with speed between shots and post-process. 😬

    • @LeicaCameraAustralia
      @LeicaCameraAustralia  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You should be able to get a dozen or so shots at full shooting speed in raw before the buffer fills. Not bad for a 47MP capture! You might also be limited by your card speed - you really need a 300Mb/s card for these kinds of data rates. Having a fast card clears the buffer a lot quicker.

    • @cpchow6675
      @cpchow6675 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LeicaCameraAustralia i am already using a 300mb/s card. In fact, when I was purchasing the Q2, the card recommended by the salesperson was not a 300mb/s one. :)
      The fundamental issue is with the large file size, so having an option (and sharing how other camera makers are doing it) in the software to reduce the size should help. Of course, this is a wishlist item from one of your many users, Leica may have other priorities.

  •  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Bo. Most of those images are only very lightly post-processed in Lightroom. Probably less than 30 secs on each one. Default profile, an exposure tweak if necessary, black and white points set correctly, maybe a bit of Vibrance. Not much more than that. Keep it simple I say!

    Love your video. I've a Q too, but I prefer my M240 with the Lux 50 mm. Only when a wide angle lens is needed, I pull out the Q. It's great for landscapes and point'n'shoot. I can highly recommand the Q or Q2 instead of the Lux 28 mm for the M. It's cheaper (new) and you get an extra body almost for free. I shot some video clips with the Q and both image and sound were OK. Not only that, but I love my Leica set up, and it's on a daily use. Keep on rolling.

    Thanks for this helpful review Nick. The set of images also illustrate well that it’s the person behind the camera that makes the image. I’ve seen way too many poorly composed shots from people using very expensive cameras. Having said all of that do you think it’s still worth getting the Q if ones budget cant quite reach a Q2?

    • @LeicaCameraAustralia
      @LeicaCameraAustralia  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The Q is still a superb camera; the Q2 has a higher res sensor but in all other respects it's an incremental improvement on the original Q rather than a whole new ball game.

    If you are also working for Leica Camera Aust., you are doing a good job selling this camera. Today is May 2022, I found a few Q2(4 units) selling their NEAR new Q2 on Gumtree, I don't know(I can guess a few) the real reasons why they are selling theirs. I don't think the reason is that this camera did not meet their expectation.
    A few users of Q and Q2 said they preferred their Q instead over Q2. I don't mind owning one but my skill level has reached that level yet so as to spend this large sum of money on a single camera even though I can afford one.

    Nick, probably not browsing your old posts much these days, but wondering if you set the shutter and ISO at Auto when you have it set at 1.7? I just got my Q2 now in '22 and very much looking forward to more confidence at that aperture. I have the M11 with summilux 35mm and more cautious about the 1.4 until I get more used to them. Yes, I could use the visoflex but not why I got my first rangefinder.

    most of your videos and I like all of them. Very inspiring and well balanced between technical explanations and sample images. I just came back from Qatar and my only camera was the Q, wich didn't disappointed me. Unfortunately the skyline pictures at sunset didn't turn out good. Almost every image was unsharp. I was impressed about your skyline image. Wich aperture did you take? I guess I just did not use my Q the right way while shooting the skyline. A recommendation from your side would be appreciated. Keep up your good work👌 Thank you in advance. Sunny greetings from Germany, Sven

  • @findermanimages
    @findermanimages 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I am considering the Q2 and this video certainly goes some way to convince me I'm doing the right thing. My only question is this, most of the great shots in this video seem to have been taken with the Q and not the Q2, or at least that's how it came across. If this is true then would it not make more (financial) sense to simply source a Q? The Q2 clearly has more resolution but it didn't seem to affect the quality of images coming out of the Q in any way at all 🤷‍♀

    • @LeicaCameraAustralia
      @LeicaCameraAustralia  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is an astute observation. If you bought a good used Q you would be very happy with it, I have no doubt. However, the Q2 does offer some extra benefits beyond the the original Q. The ability to view and crop to 75mm (equivalent) is useful, as is the full weather sealing and the improved AF and shooting rates. If 24MP is all you need then, yes, the Q would be fine for you. But the Q2 is better ;-)

    Thank you. Great photos.
    Awesome sense of color.
    One question, if I can ask:
    There are all photos made with Q?
    No any photos taken with Q2 right?
    Why am I asking: I am intending to buy a Q2 or older but good Q.
    And this is not question pf price, but all about color.
    As I see: the older Q produce better color, better mood.
    I understand that shooting raw, photographer can get almost any any color and mood, but it is not really is.
    The originally taken DNG means base of future color. I can get what I love from my m9 leica DNG in a two seconds, but if the same image was taken with Sony?)))) one hour is needed))))
    Hope you understand right.
    As I see, the Q2 images are great too, but much more “digital” than the good old Q.
    Your opinion is important. Tell please about your color experience between Q and Q2 in comparison. Thank you.

    • @LeicaCameraAustralia
      @LeicaCameraAustralia  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In the video, all images towards the end, in Antarctica, were shot on the Q2.
      As you say, shooting raw means you can (mostly) have any colour you like. Futhermore, I do not see any significant difference between the two cameras unless you shoot exactly the same pictures and do a pixel-peepy side by side comparison. Other variables are more likely to be important. It is very possible to overthink colour subtleties. I ask; is it a good photo? If you buy either a Q or a Q2 you will not be disappointed.

    Hi, great review and pictures! Quick question regarding the Q and Q2. I am in between both and would buy second hand, and the price difference is there.... Is there a difference in color science (due to sensor) between Q and Q2? I friend of mine had both and preferred the Q colors - being more "Leica look"... thanks for your feedback.

    • @LeicaCameraAustralia
      @LeicaCameraAustralia  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Rainer. I guess that depends on whether you shoot raw or jpeg. If the former, you can always make one look like the other, if jpeg then yes, different colour science and internal processing. I'm not convinced of the real value of comparisons like this though - colour is very subjective. The Q2 is better in many other ways than pure resolution - weather sealing, more responsive AF etc.

      Hi Mohamed. I have used the Q and Q2 in low light with no qualms whatsoever. The f1.7 lens means that you rarely need to use as high an ISO as cameras with slower lenses and the high ISO performance is totally fine. I have shot cities at night out of helicopters using f1.7 and ISO3200, and then have made prints up to A2 with superb results. • @LeicaCameraAustralia
      @LeicaCameraAustralia  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 75mm setting only applies to jpegs in which case you get a 7MP image (approx. 3000x2000px). This would print well at A3 and A3+ but possibly not at A2, depending on the subject matter. However, if you shoot raw you always capture the full image data, the crop is merely applied in Lightroom so you can "uncrop" it.

      Getting the Q2 would get you a 28mm lens as well as a spare camera body. Shooting with two bodies does have some advantages, plus you have a spare in case of accidents. However, the 28mm Summilux-M is utterly gorgeous so I'll have to simply recommend you get both ;-)

    How do you edit Leica Q2 DNG's with the Leica color profiles in Lightroom (Natural, Monochrome, Monochrome HC, etc)? I'm running v9.3 and they don't show up

    • @LeicaCameraAustralia
      @LeicaCameraAustralia  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Bruce. The only profiles that show up in LR9.3 appear to be the Adobe generic ones (Landscape, Natural etc). If you are referring to the Film Styles (Monochrome HC etc) in the Q2 then they only apply to Jpegs, not raw file. Since I very rarely shoot Jpegs, this has never been an issue for me, but if you want to 'emulate' the Jpeg film styles for your DNG files you'd have to set up your own Presets. If you Browse under the Profiles in LR you might find a look that is to your liking. Sorry I can't be more definitive.

As I am a Q2 user I was well impressed with this video that I just had to subscribe, this being my first time on this site. Love the way you narrate over your images instead of playing music as most u/tubers do, very refreshingly different. Noticed you keep the native hood on. Whilst I like it, I find it awkward to use a polariser as my stubby fingers get caught on the edge of the hood. Had a thought of getting a circular one to replace it. This would help me use existing 58 and 62mm filters instead of buying a new set and these don't fit under this hood. Cant find the exact size thread the hood uses, some say 60mm other say 62mm, any ideas which is correct? Thanks for your video and look forward to see more of your post

      Hi Victor. Glad you liked the video. Regarding the hood ring size - it's an external thread, not internal like 99% of filters, and may not be in any 'standard size'. You might be able to get an adapter ring milled in a specialist machine shop.

    47mb. wouldn't that take up tremendous storage? is it possible to take it with a compressed mb?

    • @LeicaCameraAustralia
      @LeicaCameraAustralia  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The M11 offers different size raw image capture, but the Q2 does not. Storage is cheap, and so 47MP is not as problematic as people think. Jpegs out of camera are still very manageable.

    My practice is photographing strangers on the street so, headshots, torso upwards and full-length. I’m happy to move up close to my subjects, how close do I have to get without lens distortion? Plus, what size is a raw file cropped to say 50mm equivalent on the Q2. What is the minimum RAM needed to process the files? Apologies for so many questions!

    • @LeicaCameraAustralia
      @LeicaCameraAustralia  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The photo that makes up the thumbnail of this video is shot at 28mm. You can see for yourself how little the lens distorts.
      The raw file is always the full uncropped resolution, the Jpeg is the image that gets cropped and with a 50mm crop you get a 15MP capture.
      Minimum ram required? Most computers these days come with 8GB or more, that would be fine as long as you have no other apps running. Recommended would be 16GB or more.

    I am more into Landscapes and macro as my primary interest. I shoot Sony Full frame. For the need to have a second body as compact do you advice Q/Q2? I don’t earn out of this as it’s my hobby but I don’t want to compromise on image quality. Do want more megapixel (current camera is Sony A7iii) .. pls advice as I can afford it but do I need one? Not sure pls suggest

      The Q2 is great for landscapes with the 47MP sensor, and if you want to do panoramas the crop mode means you can make up stitched images out of 50mm focal length images. It also has a really cool macro mode where you can shift the entire lens into a new macro mode - the whole lens ring distance information even changes, it's very slick.

    • @LeicaCameraAustralia
      @LeicaCameraAustralia  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well, that depends... But probably not wide open. You only need the smaller apertures if you have fairly close objects in the frame that need to be sharp. A view from a high lookout, for example, would be fine at even f2.8 because everything is a very long way away. I suggest practicing with different f stops and see what difference it makes in different situations.

      The shutter speeds go up high enough to use f1.7 in bright light. Just set the shutter speed dial to A and use ISO100.

    Hi.
    I would like to ask you a question about the problem happened to me. I purchase Q2 and it was fantastic very beautiful and clear photos I take it. but since one week it fell down from my hand it’s not that far distant just about 30 cm from my head to the ground actually I was sitting on a sofa. after that I feel the photos become noisy even with 100 ISO still the image not look like before! Ethan autofocusing was not before ! can you help me what do you think happened to the camera I try to rest to factory settings I try everything but still I’m not satisfied with the photos coming from the camera. I am thinking to take it physically to his shop but unfortunately it’s so far from my place. Because I purchased it online. can you help me? do you have any idea about what was happened and how can solve it ? Even there is no single scratch or damage happened to the camera I check it carefully nothing happened because the space is just 30 cm I was sitting on the sofa and fell down from my hand to the ground yes this what was happened
    thank you.

    • @LeicaCameraAustralia
      @LeicaCameraAustralia  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      All I can suggest is to shoot an image as similar as possible to something you have shot before and see if they are indeed different. Then your only option is to take the camera to be examined. Sometimes cameras can survive really bad drops, sometimes even small drops can cause some sort of internal mis-alignment. Just bad luck.

    No it's not mechanicaly connected it's a fly by wire connection. Meaning bunch of wires a separate chip plastic gears motor and over all less reliable lens then a truly mechanical one made of metal. Don't get me wrong it's the best fly by wire system I have used but it is still electronic.

    • @LeicaCameraAustralia
      @LeicaCameraAustralia  ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s most definitely mechanical. 100% guarantee. The clues are the hard stops at min and max focus and the need for a decoupling catch. Plus I confirmed all this with the Q line product manager in April when I was in Wetzlar.

      @@LeicaCameraAustralia Leica can say what ever they want but there is a ton of videos them assembling expensive true made in Germany build by hand 10000 dollar lenses of which they produce a few every year as they have 60 people working there and lenses are polished by hands. But they never show how Leica q lenses are made. And they are not idiots putting a 6000 dollar lens on a 6000 dollar camera. Also I am not sure how can you have a automatic focusing lens with ois which is obviously packed with motors and electronics and not a fly by wire system if they can do that why not do it to their more expensive Leica m lenses which are made in Germany. Don't get me wrong it's a good lens and focusing by hand feels miles ahead of Fuji and Sony. But so many questions and not a single video on TH-cam of manufacturing process. Only of their m series which is mostly (aside from electronics) are truly made in Germany.
      Besides I have no problem with m being so expensive I get it. But all other models are build and made in Asia and Portugal with minimal input from Leica itself. They are made not by hand but by machines, just like most of other Japanese cameras. I own leica q and love it. I got it for 1800 $ in excellent condition of eBay. That's a fair price for a great camera. But almost 7000 dollars for a brand new leica q for a few more megapixels? Which is a glorified Panasonic camera makes no sense.

      My camera does focus manually, as expected, when I do what you suggest with the grey card WB setting. One thing to check, does your lens make a very different noise when manually focussing compared to autofocus? On my Q3 I can clearly hear the focus motors operating when in AF, but in MF all I can hear is the OIS working plus a slight sliding/friction sound of the lens mechanism moving, much like on an M lens (if you listen very carefully). The sounds of AF and MF are very different on my camera.
