Oh, also, Alclad is excellent for 3D printed (SLA/DLP, i.e. methacrylate resin) models as well. You can go nuts with layers (up to 4-5) and even the imperfections (seams, support marks, layer misalignments) out really well. Sticks to it pretty good too, after a 24 hour cure.
After some years with no plastic modelling at all, I know now that a lot more tools and products are available. Im of course outdated. This video was a great help to get me back on track. Very well explained and clear input. Thanks mate!
Your welcome and welcome back to the plastic crack lol.
huh. I've been using Mr. Finishing Surfacer 1500 Gray and it's always been anything but smooth. Usually have to go over it with a ultrafine grit cloth. I haven't done it myself, but Stnylrez can supposedly be used with lacquers as well. It's supposed to be good for everything once fully cured.
⭐️ well made and useful overview ⭐️ thanks for taking the time 👍
I agree 100% stynlrez is best acrylic primer for sure, ammo mig one shot is basically it rebranded
Is the AMMO stuff true though? I heard it's low quality and poor coverage with chipping.
I use Duplicolor primer in a bucket of hot water, makes it into a fine mist, never had any issues with it.
I have used the Badger primmer and I have to thin it to use it. I thin it 50/50. It works well then. I have heard that some people warm it up and use it...they say it is more fluid that way. It does not make any difference for me. Still pretty thick. I thin just about everything really. Makes clean up very easy. Great videos Dave...thanks for sharing.
What you use to thin badger?
@@mcirving My home made thinner...
The consensus is the Stynlrez is the best. So much so that UK companies re-brand it. Why no one carries it in my city in northern Alberta Canada is beyond me. Fantastic "Tip Tuesday" Dave!!!!!
Thanks for info, ya there has to be someone distributing there.
Stynylrez is hardly the best. It's good, sure...but it isn't anywhere near as durable as Alclad.
@@FighterDoken How does it compare to Mr. Primer 1000? Thanks.
@@hgbarnes1584 Alclad and Mr. Primer are both lacquer based...Stynylrez and Vallejo surface primer aren't. Lacquer-based primers chemically bond to the plastic parts and are much more durable. Stynylrez and VSP just sit on the surface. Masking tape could peel them off.
@@FighterDoken Yes know that and thank you. I'm asking how does Alclad primer compare to Mr. Hobby, in your opinion. I'm using Mr. Primer 1000, but if it's worth investigating Alclad then I will.
You know Stynylrez is a pretty good acrylic primer, perhaps one of the best. Before priming always wash the parts while on the sprue in hot soapy water to insure there is no mold release. Being cheap I use acrylic paint and floor polish and it works almost as good as a primer. Never had a problem. For non acrylic paint I just decant spray can (non gloss) grey paint for plastic.
I always wash parts after trimmed and cleaning because you get Sanding dust and body oil on parts but ya that's a great primer unless painting with lacquer.
Just a heads up for anyone interested, Mr resin primer surfacer has been discontinued. Your best bet for a resin primer is Mr Primer surfacer 1000.
Thanks.
I Brush Stynylrez on the mini...works great. It's so great, it even adheres to Reaper Miniatures shtty plastic Bones minis.
11:56 I was just looking at it on Amazon and it has several warnings in the description saying not to buy it if the package may sit outside in the cold.
@Dave's World
What about those spray can primers from Tamiya and Mr. Hobby?
Thanks Dave. A great video and one on a subject that is often quite contentious. I've come to the conclusion that some primers are impacted by the environment they are used or stored in and by simple factors like how people spray the stuff. Also not all primers in the same range are equal. I use Vallejo primer for most projects and have several of the colours. Black is by far the easiest and most forgiving of how you spray it, while gray requires you to be far more careful in how you apply it as does Gloss Black. Other colours fall somewhere in-between. Honestly there are so many variables with primer!
Keep up the great videos.
Dan
Thank you very much and you are right, lot of variables that you learn with time.
I wanted to try Stynylrez but had a terrible experience with it. It was chunky when I got it, and no amount of shaking and stirring got rid of it. i tried straining it, but it was still clogging my airbrush. I was even trying to shoot it out of a Badger 150 with the Heavy tip which is like .78 or something crazy, and was getting a ton of dry tip and clogs. I contacted Badger and initially it looked like they would send a replacement bottle, but after weeks of waiting they never even responded asking for my address. I ended up throwing the bottle away.
It turns out if that primer freezes at all on the way to you, it will turn into mud. So it's best not to order Stynylrez during the winter months, while it can freeze in the trucks on the way to you.
I've wanted a good acrylic primer for a long time. But I've learned to love and stick to Mr. Surfacer primer thinned 50/50 with lacquer thinner. I've never had it fail to adhere to plastic or rubber surfaces.
It says on the back of the STYNYLREZ label NOT TO THIN this product. I have used it extensively at the recommended pressure of 20-25psi with no issues! After using Stynylrez for the first time I through away all my other primers.
A little idea for resin to help primers and paints stick better is use wesley's bleach white i think thats how its spelled it will pull all the mold release off the parts and not hurt the resin
A really great video! In it you mentioned that you'd do another one explaining how to prepare home-made thinner for the acrylic primers. I could not find it, is it out yet or a pending project? Thanks
I never did as didn't seem to have interest
thanks for the video, what would you recommend to use with a brush painting ?
The Vallejo does perfect for hand brushing.
Mr. Primer Surfacer is actually a multipurpose primer (for resin, metal, plastic etc) and it can only be thinned with levelling thinner.. if you use normal hobby thinner it will clog in your airbrush. It’s written on the cap. 😁😁
How does one "add gloss to it" with the Mr. Surfacer Black? Would that simply be adding in some of the clear gloss topcoat?
I like vallejo primer but it cant be sanded witch I find annoying. While One shot primer (Stynylrez) can get sanded and are much more dureble than the latex vallejo stuff. But my favourite primer I think is the new white alcohol based mr aqueous surfacer 1000. Wery smooth perfect for anime model figurines. Revell has a pre dilluted laqcuer based primer called Aqua color primer, the name make it sound like its water based but its not. I have ordered it and hope it is good since its pre thinned for airbrush.
Who says Vallejo can't be sanded?, It can be sanded just fine.
@@STARSHADOWWOODWORKS Some guy on a hobby forum I dont remember where said so. But then I know that its not true, btw how long to wait until sanding is it 12, 24 or 48 hours?
Lol it all depends on the kind of primer and sanding, to be safe I give least couple hours. But if like a laquer and see blemish etc I'll sand as soon as dry to touch.
Great video Dave 👍 I just started using the stynelrez UK equivalent (UMP primer) so far so good
Sweet, glad you guys have equivalent
I have had issues getting Stynylrez adhereing to styrene. How are you prepping your models?
Thanks for the video! I have a question regarding the Vallejo primer, can you prime with that and then paint with lacquer on top of it or would that not be recommended? Should U use lacquer primer to paint with lacquer? Thanks!
Thanks for watching. You need to use Laquer based primer if laying down Laquer paint otherwise will eat primer and cause issues either peeling, orange peeling etc.
Dave's World thank you for the quick response!! Really appreciate it !
No problem. Have great weekend.
watched the video twice to get all the info in my head. im doing my basket right now, i want really good results and im airbrush only guy. please help me make it easy, surfacer 1000, 1200 of 1500? please, cant wait for your reply. i am doing planes only, no cars and tanks yet...though i have a humvee kit waiting to be done :D
have you tried SMS. I use only mr surfacer but getting hard to find without waiting a month. so was thinking about trying SMS or if you know another of the like. Mr surfacer is the best I've tried
I haven't tried yet but have heard great things about sms paints.
thanks for the response
think I'm gonna order some and if I do ill let ya know what I think
mr surfacer is getting hard to get during these times so something has to give haha
@@walterwilmoth8390 lol I hear ya, you can check with USA gundam for the surface and sms. Think carry both.
Excellent video, I was wondering do you have issues with vallejo primer forming a skin of paint meaning that it can peel off? Having problems with sanding of seams once a model has been coated.
I haven't had that issue unless model wasn't washed beforehand. Or it's a really smooth surface.
Hey Dave, Thanks for the nice video!
I was quite impresed by the Stynylrez Primer and how scratch resistent it is.
Currently I am using Vallejo Gray Surface Primer and have some issues with scratch resistency.
I know that I can't compare it to a rattle can primer but yours look way more durable than mine.
I wonder if I did something wrong?
Flat surfaces are fine, edges peel very very easy.
Thanks!
Think really has to do with washing before hand and how smooth surface is. I'd to smooth there's nothing to bite to.
vallejo jumps off my plastic if I sneak up on it while it isn't looking lol
stynlrez is the way to go if you only want to use acrylic
Thnx., this was very helpfull
Glad I could help
Interesting I've been using printer from a can for my resin 3D prints but it's Citadel or Army Painter, specifically made for models. I'm very much considering getting an airbrush though.
How about ABS gundam frame parts? Ex: the MG delta plus has ALOT..
I am back and i will use MR FINISHING SURFACER 1500 high diluted as primer with mr color thinner. is this a good idea and what to do if not ? (i had MR FINISHIN SURFACER 1200 and i was not happy)
I have seen somewhere written MR COLOR THINNER 400 used as primer and if this is true than this is the thinnest coat of primer - what do you say ?
ALL OF THIS BECAUSE IS HARD TO HAVE IN EASTERN EUROPE THE MOST APPRECIATED STINYLLREZ
TY IN ADVANCE SIR
I usually only use Mr surfacer 1k thinned well and gives nice smooth surface. And ya using any lacquer thinner works well. Stynelrez works fine if doing acrylic but not sure will hold up under lacquer.
Mr surfacer goes lowest number is the thickest, higher number is finer. 1000 thinned about 40/60 with lacquer thinner is perfect. Use the mr hobby self levelling thinner for god like results. One mist coat, 2 wet coats - perfect.
I hate badgers white primer. What good white primers are there? Do they all suffer from the same problem?
which primer do you recommend for scale model cars using tamiya paints
Wonderful video!! Please a question : For Mr Surfacer you mention that you thin it at a ratio 10-20%, is that right? Because at most reviews they mention that they dillute it 1/1 or 60thinner/40primer.
Yes I thin more than most with leveling thinner to 1 extend use and gives great surface that rarely has to be sanded smooth after.
Mr surfacer dilluted 60/40 is the most capable/cost efficiency and smooth primer of all !!!
Someone suggested I use the Stynylrez paint to prime the rubber parts of action figures I'm custom painting. Would anyone suggest using this or anything else on rubber?
Any acrylic paint with a Polyurethane such as floor wax, Createx 4030, and my favorite Minwax polycrylic has the adhesion of any of those acrylic primers. So you don't really need a dedicated primer...........
Can i use stynerez to spray laquare paint over?
In theory you can as long as make sure fully cured and light coat of laquer paint.
want to change the color of the kit original from a dark blue to a light grey...what color primer/surfacer should i use?
Best bet the grey.
@@STARSHADOWWOODWORKS thank you Dave!
So I could hypothetically hand paint/prime with Mr surfacer 1500? If so do I need to thin it down or can it go straight from the brush to the plastic part?
If hand brushing I would use right from bottle. Yes theoretically you could hand brush tho fumes might be to much lol
@@STARSHADOWWOODWORKS Very true lol, I have a respirator that I planned on using regardless, but I'm too poor for an airbrush so that's why I asked if it could be done. Thank you very much for the reply and quick response.
You have issues with the liquid tamiya surface primer? I've found it to be extremely durable.
Ya the spray just never works out for me. I know people that only use it tho.
I found out the hard way that Mr. Surfacer REALLY doesn't like water. Had a hell of a time cleaning it out of my airbrush, but that was my fault. Thinned with leveling thinner, it works great.
Ya Mr surfacer is a lacquer primer, acts like oil and water and gets nasty. I always have a container of mineral spirit or cheap lacquer thinner from hardware store for cleaning airbrush out.... Also side note.... Lacquer thinner is great for cleaning acrylics out of airbrush as eats it right up.
i just ordered a testors paint primer spray can for my plastic model kit of bob lazar's ufo. plus some clear coat lacquers, one semi gloss and one clear, not matt. my plan is to primer the clear plastic and paint it then the semi gloss lacquer spray on top of that and on top of the decals. is that the proper method?
Sounds right... What kind of paint are you using?
@@STARSHADOWWOODWORKS i'm trying out Testors primer and enamel paint, i got another ufo that i've seen others give weathering scorch marks like its re entered earth atmos, wanna try that on that one so i bought tamiya flat black. i know i don't want oil paints, they apply on too thick, so i'm trying out testors and tamiya acrylics.
@@STARSHADOWWOODWORKS keep in mind, i'm returning to model kit building after a decades from being a kid doing amature work :P so i'm learning almost from scratch here.
@@lifetimesofjcm8582 OK just asking as would hate to see your hard work ruined if putting lacquer top coat on like acrylic paint and cause rippling etc.
Good luck and good to see back in the hobby.
@@STARSHADOWWOODWORKS well the lacquers i got are also testors, i i aim to use the semi gloss to give the hull a smooth polished metal look, and to help lock in the decals. then any weather with acrylics on top of that, and then a protective layer of the regular clear coat lacquer on the weathering to help protect that. will that be ok?
sorry but i don't understand because i don't know enough: i spray primer and go for next step - to spay the paint ?
TY SIR
Yes sir, the reason. For primer be it model or a actual car is its properties bite and adhere to the surface and give your paint a micro texture to attach to, if didn't use primer either paint would run or once dried would crack and flake off.
mr.surfacer primer is more glossy than regular mr. surfacer 1000 and has a different smell
Seems like the “Mr.” products are very expensive. That said is that because the “Mr.” products are so much better than any other? I’m not being pesky, just asking because I’m relatively NEW compared to most of your guys. Not looking for cheap, efficient is my go too. Thank you
Can i use laquer based primer and subsequently use acrylic paint on a laquer primed miniature?
Yes, lacquer base primer you can use any kind of paint over.
Acrylic based primer you can only use acrylic based paint over otherwise will get eaten through.
Greatly appreciate your response. is there a difference between 1000, 1200, 1500?
1000 is going to give a very nice surface that's smooth and don't have to post sand like using say krylon, the higher will give almost glass surface when dry.
Made to fill any imperfections, swirl or scratches in the piece after Sanding but there is drawback.
With the high 1500 you have to do light coats paint and let dry before another because so smooth paint will bead up and run, but lacquer paint drys fast, acrylic will be where you have too really watch.
Hope helps.
Thanks. I'm new to miniatures painting and recently finished a bottle of vallejo surface primer that my friend gave to me. Unfortunately, acrylic primers are expensive at my area and i've managed to source Mrsurfacer 1000/1200/1500 spray cans for really cheap. Which would be the best spray can primer to buy for miniatures where im using citadel paint afterwards? Really appreciate your insights.
No problem, ya I actually got a lot of Mr surfacer from hobby town when they have a good sale lol
I guess enamels are toxic?...im trying new primers and I've been using acrylics for a long time so i was willing to try enamels
Lol if your in California everything is toxic including the air lol
There will be odors using enamel but not as bad as laquers
Dave's World so if i use lacquers i need to put the mask on and get some fans
@@davideleo2062 yes, would not hurt to do same with enamel if Airbrushing. But if hand brushing you don't need
Dave's World thanks, you just got a sub
I tried Stynylrez primer recent and the paint drips like a MF. The bottle probably sit too long in the store which made the paint particles to precipitate and harden at the bottom.
I would return. They had lot of batches that were frozen in transit and ruined.
Do have to thin the alclad primer??
They say no, but sometimes I feel I need to.
@@STARSHADOWWOODWORKS ohhh ok thank you for replying
Don’t use Vallejo primer on resin. Just... don’t. Learned that the hard way. It’s rubbery even when cured, cannot be sanded, and if you scratch it, it’ll peel off like a glove. That’s on top of the other issues (constant clogging on the needle, crappy texture).
I've never had those issues....bad batch, perhaps?
Would it work on reaper ???
It needs 24 hours to dry. If you try sanding before that then that’s the result
Really? Games workshop want you to bring a bulldozer to an armor battle? Really? (shakes my head in dismay) What's next having really tall tanks with war banners plastered all over it so the enemy can see it well?
Good vid though. Informative.
Lol the tall tanks with banners are warmachine minis lol. Thanks you and have a good day.
Stynylrez Absolutely garbage I bought the 4 ounce bottle it peeled contacted badger their customer service is terrible threw it in the garbage for model car building the worst is their customer service is absolutely garbage .
I'm sorry, I know early this year they had a lot that got frozen and messed with makeup as I even got a bottle that did that. I've had better luck with this than that vallejo but either one need to make sure surface roughed up and not just smooth plastic. Ultimately if looking for one on plastic that will never flake just try the Mr surfacer primer... Lacquer works every time.
Thanks for your feed back and yes I feel you about their CS, I got reamed for doing honest review on ab and not singing highest praise... Wasn't even a free ab, I paid for it lol
I tried the Alclad primer and micro filler and it lifted off when I was masking the model I was working on, no idea what I did wrong if anything. After the fact, I tested it on some spoons, 8 spoons, 6 were fine, primer didn't budge, 2 of them, the primer lifted right off with masking tape. I've looked online and can't find any answers to why I'm having this porblem.
