I'm taking my first dive this coming weekend into airbrushing, and it's thanks to you and your videos. You've got a lot of knowledge and the down to Earth commentary has made it all easy to digest.
STY - Styrene NYL - Nylon REZ - Resin I've got some Ammo in Sand, Green and think they do a red brown for Armour primer. One thing I hope to try are metallics over the gloss black - most probably AK extreme.
I was initially put off by this primer because of bad exeriences trying to hand brush the black unthinned. Then I discovered that some thinning made a huge difference. I now use a Paasche H Series airbrush with them with no problems, thinning with the Vallejo Flow Improver. Immediately after use and a wipe of the cup I drop the cup and needle assembly into warm soapy water for cleanup. Your videos are so very instructive I recommend them to my friends who are getting into airbrushing.
I spray it with a .3 needle in my Eclipse HP-CS at 30 PSI with no thinning. Works just fine. Also worth a mention is that you can spray any paint you want over it. Thanks for the video!
The way I’ve been dealing with the white is to spray gray first then put a thin coat of white over the top of it. I was initially trying to do zenithal highlighting with just the primers but I think it’s a better plan to prime black and use a white paint or ink instead of white primer.
Paul from NB Canada again. Thanks for the in depth review. ONE thing to mention is that some of them CAN turn into a Jelly like goo in transit. I ordered a 12 pack of primers on sale and Badger had to send out 3 new bottles as even the guy on the phone said to simply toss them out. BUT what DID work, worked out well.
Love your videos!! One comment I would add what Temp you set your dehydrator. Even though you probably said the temp in other videos. For me it is OK to repeat. Because going back to find the particular video when you state the Temp is very difficult to locate.
As a newcomer to the scale modeling hobby and a new miniature painter I just want to say your videos are VERY well done with a plethora of information. The how to videos helped me immensely.
A few things that you may not know yet, Idk, but 1) (I learned this from Gilbert Mondragon) warming them up with a candle warmer works marvelously to improve the flow and mixing/shaking/stirring capabilities; 2) (I learned this one by asking Ken Schlotfeldt at Badger) you can mix acrylic inks into these (don't go overboard) and make nearly endless variations of primers with them; and 3) mixing these primers with one another works AMAZINGLY.
I couldn't get the black to spray out of the bottle with a .5 needle to save my life. I still like mission models primer. It sticks to resin like crazy and Tru-Color sticks to Mission models so staying with Mission Models for now.
I know this is an old video , have you ever tried the vallejo surface primers . I love the stynelrez primers but thinking about giving the vallejo a try to see which one I like the best .
Pretty cool the colored primers. I have question, concerning color modulation. If using as a base color, say that olive green, can you mix with a little of the white or yellow, or the matt black. Im just wondering if these colored primers can be mixed with their line of others colors?
This is why I watch all of your videos! I have watched probably 10 videos on this stuff and everybody loves it , but till now I have only seen the black and gray sprayed. Thanks for going to such detail.
I appreciate what you have taught me about airbrushing. It has given me the confidence to get back in the hobby. What is is a god stand to hold aircraft models?
Great video. I’ve used these primers for years, mainly black & gray. I agree that a 0.7 on my Badger lays it down nice without thinning. I might have to try some of the other colors now.
I just received my first 2oz bottle of Gloss Black, and I could not get a true gloss finish that was useful with chromes. Both tests I ran used a .7 needle and 20psi, on glossy white spoons. I applied 5 coats to the first spoon, drying in between with a modeling heat gun, and when I realized that the gloss was only semi-, I tried again on another spoon, with only 2 light coats to get full coverage. Yes, it was less shiny than the first, but both were still not high gloss, like my Alclad Gloss Black produces without breaking a sweat.
Some batches require thinner to get a nice Gloss. I have troubles with one of my bottles. Thin it about 70/30 paint to thinner. You'll get a nice shiney finish
Thanks for this review Rex . It's very timely as I've just got hold of some Stynylrez primer and yet to use it. Really appreciate the tips on how to thin it and needle size.
I spray Stynylrez using a .3mm needle @20 PSI. Never thinned and never had an issue with a decent airbrush. Tip dry is prevalent with it if your air pressure is too high and every one of my cheap airbrushes seems to suffer from it since they move way more air than they do paint.
I really like Stynylrez primer! I've read that Stynylrez stands for the three basic materials it's designed for" STYrene, NYLon, and RE(Z)in. I guess they used a Z instead of an S so people would pronounce it right! Love your channel, I've learned a lot from you!
I have not used another primer since these came out a few years ago. They just work for me, and save me some money in spray cans. I haven't tried the colors, but do use the black, grey, white and gloss blacks.
Stynelrez Black and White are my go to primers; I really need to get into the habit of color priming my models with reds and blues so I'm happy that they make a full range to pick from - thanks for the giveaway!
I enjoy your videos and their very informative. I have just started using Stynelrez and I have to say it's the best primer I've used. I have found that you can indeed use it straight out of the bottle and at 25-30psi it goes on great and auto-levels great. Also, I have found when using it straight a little goes a long way!!!
I've been using these for a few months now and find them a very good product, across the board. My only gripe is they stick so well, they are tough to get out of the airbrush if left too long - and by too long, I mean a very shot time. But, they are great primers.
@@mattterrell4304 call me stupid for asking, but is super hot water safe for the airbrush? I try to like this product but it dries sooo fast its just unworkable for me :|
I need to try those primers. I bought a Patriot 105 after watching your review. As an old guy getting back into the hobby, your videos have been a great help. I bought some of the Patriot Extreme parts to put on my 105, tall trigger and the finger rest. Such an improvement in control and comfort. It truly is a great airbrush.
Hi Rex. Thank you for another great review. One thing that I would add is that if you end up with dried Stynylrez in your airbrush the best cleaner I found is Denatured Alcohol (Fuel). I use the Kleen Strip brand in the blue can from Walmart. Also I bought that vortex mixer in this video based on your review and it is one of the best things that I have added to my workbench in years. Having a consistent paint mix has made a huge difference in my ability to spray acrylics. Thanks again and keep up the good work.
Fantastic Fantastic video, Thank you very much for and awesome review of the primers !!!! Please keep em coming, everyone keep yourselves and love ones safe and healthy.
I am not sure where I am messing up, but I bought a few of these some time back, but when I use them, trying to clean them out of my gun is a massif pain, as it is like trying to pull gummy syrup out of the tip etc. I have experienced this before when using other water based acrylics as well. I have tried thinning with 91% alcohol, Windex, wiper washer fluid, etc. I was hoping this was a good alternative to seal plastic before using lacquers, but I am not sure it is worth the massive cleanup effort. What I am missing? How are you and others working around that.
Does anyone have any recommendations on what I should do for a white acrylic water based primer? I need white specifically for a project, but it looks like this one has some issues 🤷🏻♀️
I got the white, black, and grey a couple of months back. These primers helped me realize that my old airbrush was crap and I needed a better one. It would dry really easily on the needle mid project and I'd have the disassemble and clean out. even with thinning. I went off and got an eclipse, and after a little thinning no issues.
Another great one! Please don't pick me for that figure. Looking forward for another air brush give away. Charles I must agree with you brother. Me too soon I'm hoping.
Great video, thanks very much. I have had challenges with the white primer and I haven't used any of the other colors. I will give it another try and see how it goes. This time I'll thin it and use some flow improver, along with a bigger needle. After watching this, I may try some of the other colors as well. Thanks again, have a great day. -David
I have just started useing stynylrez primers. I have the black, white, gray , and the red brown. They work well on photo etch and are really durable. I have an very old 1970's badger air brush that uses the old bottle siphon with a 5mm needle. It came with a 3.5 mm needle originally. I have been thinking about getting a newer badger like the 105 or the extreme but don't know if it is worth it to spend the extra money for the flow valve on the extreme model. I thinking the 105 package with the 3 different needles would be the better choice that way have the variety of sizes needles for different paints like stynylrez primers and other regular paints. Like the variety of different color primers that stynylrez offers. I didn't know that they offered so many. It was a good video review to see all the other colors and how they spray. Thanks for sharing and be safe. Look forward to you next video. 👍🚂🚢⛵
There was a bad batch that hit the market. I got a sample bottle from a show, used it loved it. Bought a bottle of black a few months later. Total nightmare. Stuff gummed up in the cup and brush and turned into latex. Took me a hour to break down the brush and clean it all out. The sample bottle, a red oxide, still shoots wonderful.
Oh yeah, it actually made the news in the hobby world. They posted on their Facebook page they knew about it. During the pandemic they had to use alternative ingredients and that's where the trouble started. I thought they were sending out replacements? You should write to them
That Badger sold out quick! I have a Procon 289 (.3mm) but it would be nice to have something with .5 and .7 for such a good price. Maybe I can catch it next time. Thanks for the video!
I've tried a few primers for gunpla bits (vallejo, vallejo mecha, and stynylrez) and stynylrez is definitely the best. I still haven't been able to get it on totally smooth because it runs away from me pretty much no matter what, but I'm sure I just have to practice. I probably just have a heavy trigger finger. I thin it a little bit with vallejo airbrush thinner and use a 0.4mm needle at about 25psi. The regular vallejo primer is totally useless for everything and the mecha grey and mecha black are pretty good.
It's a great primer. I do thin mine slightly too. Back off the the air pressure a little and go with a few light coats. You don't have to wait long between them just a minute or so between coats. It will look rough but it will dry perfectly
@@barbatosrex9473 Thanks for the tips! I finally got it right on my new 1/72 X-Wing model and it turns out I was being too fiddly with thinning. All I did this time was mix 20 drops of Stynylrez Grey with 3 or 4 drops Liquitex flow improver, shot it at between 20 and 25psi with a 0.4 needle and boom, perfect! Also very very thin coats like you suggested.
If we're talking about water based acrylic primers, I would have to take a look at them. But probably my all time favorite acrylic, solvent based primer is Aqueous surfacer. That stuff's better than even some lacquer primers.
Great video. I'm not a big fan of the white, but really like the gray and black. I've found that after time (4 months), straining it through 190 micron mesh really helps, as it seems to really settle and clump, even though caps are tights and all that stuff. I like that it lays down thick unlike Vallejo which is really thin. Take care and have a great day
Hmm, I'd be curious to try some of these. I only recently got into airbrushing and I started with acrylics. I'm trying to make my way towards doing some candy styles, so I've recently been trying alclads and lacquers.

Maybe this will make since. I've seen a lot of AFV modelers use the aka red primer but, then again I've seen them use Black base with White highlights and then they will spray on the top coat. Which primer color is the best to use or is it a matter of opinion?
Another great video - just what I needed, as I'm trying to figure out how to apply primer right now. I think I'm gonna splash out on a Procon 0.5mm like yours.
Great video. I have had problems in the past with Stynelrez gumming up my airbrush. I'm not sure what I was doing wrong. Now that I have seen your video, I'm hoping to try their product again.

Golden makes an airbrush medium that is awesome! A lot of airbrush thinners are alcohol based, which kinda exacerbates tip dry. The medium helps.

UMP primer as well as Ammo One Shot are the same as Stylenrez.
I bought a bottle of UMP primer which apparently is the same stuff. I don't have a decent airbrush or a spraybooth to use it or the paints I own.
Great video for introducing primer. I always wanted to find one
Definitely a nice set of primers. I find some primers to be very course and require a lot of work to get smooth
Have been waiting for a detailed Stynlrez review. Thanks
Maybe this will make since. I've seen a lot of AFV modelers use the aka red primer but, then again I've seen them use Black base with White highlights and then they will spray on the top coat. Which primer color is the best to use or is it a matter of opinion?
Appreciate this test! I have been trying to decide if I should purchase Stynylrez for a while now. Now I know I def need to buy these.
New to airbrush, you made it seem so easy.
Amazing! Can see all kinds of possibilities with my model cars!
OMG!!! Thank you for helping with your videos!!! They are a great help!!
Thanks for the video, might have to try some of these out.
