    My BMW i3 wouldnt lose that much in 2 weeks - so why can't Tesla achive the same trick that BMW manage to do - I don't know why,especially i am always told by Tesla fanboys that they are the ones supposedly years ahead of legacy car makers.

    I wish this could be tested on all cars because I think this is one of the things that keeps people who can't charge at home from buying an EV. But if I can calculate that, with my driving, I would have to charge once or twice a month and not have to worry about battery drain while the car is parked then EVs feels much more accessible as it's not as big of an issue to just go somehwere to eat once a month while charging the car up.

    I just parked my M3 in Orlando for 10 days while in Shanghai and only lost 10 miles. I was worried about “vampire drain” but the moderate Florida winter didn’t hurt at all. I also made a point to not check the app and wake it up. I also didn’t use sentry mode.

    Vampire drain might be worse in the summer than winter trying to keep battery cool and overheat protection. Very awesome that it slept without draining for that long. Tesla really has improved on it from last year at this time. I got ceramic only on mine now and a light snow slid off so nicely like that.
    Other than more frequent snow I find so many common things between drivers here and there. So frustrating.

      My Volvo v70 uses about 0,6 l/hr idling with a 70 litre tank. This means it can idle for about 4,8 days. If the model 3 heater runs at an average of 1kw(which i think is a low estimate) it will run out in 75 hours or about 3.1 days.

    • @kardy12
      @kardy12 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Audun Skilbrei
      That sounds like a fairly low estimate. Given that a typical fossil engine uses around 0.6 litres of fuel per hour per litre of engine displacement, and a v70 typically comes with either a 2.0 or a 2.5L engine, that would suggest it should use between 1.2 and 1.5L of fuel per hour while idling.
      In turn, that suggests it should be able to run between 46 and 58 hours before a 70L tank is empty.
      And that is for an engine idling with no load - anything that increases the electrical load (e.g AC, fans to push hot air into the cabin, lights) will increase idle rpm, which in turn increases fuel consumption.

    • @audunskilbrei8279
      @audunskilbrei8279 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kardy12 It's not an estimate. It's the actual consumption of my(1.6litre) volvo v70. Or should I say the value given by the cars consumption meter. The meter in the volvo rather handily switches from l/100km to l/hour when the car is standing still. And that figure is with the AC running. If I turn the AC of it typically goes down to around 0,4-0,5. And since the objective of this test it to keep the car warm the AC certainly could be turned off. As for the fan and the lights. Come on. The power of such a fan is probably only around 50 watts max. Lights? LED lights consume negligible amounts of power. Most of them could be turned off anyway. And 1kw to run the tesla heater is a very low estimate if we're being honest. The volvo would easily win this contest.

    • @audunskilbrei8279
      @audunskilbrei8279 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I should also mention that the volvo is a diesel. Your figures may be more correct when applied to a petrol engine.

    Question, how well do these batteries last in extremely cold weather, -20c to -40c? I live around 30 to 40km from work, so its around 80k back and forth. Would it last back and forth, without plugging in at work, and would it charge each time I get home for the next work day with just a normal wall charge? This of course is only for winter conditions, I know it would be just fine in summer and warmer months. Electric is looking really nice, but there are always concerns!

    That's 120kWh/year. That's not so negligible. And you always loose energy at that rate - if you are at home and the car is sitting in front of your house, or you are at the other end of the world. In range that's around 700km.

      It’s pretty negligible considering it’s effectively 1.7 charges over an entire year. Contrast that with wasting 80% of the energy of a tank as wasted heat every time you refuel a fossil car.

      SCfan84
      Err, a coal power plant typically has a thermal efficiency of around 40% while a natural gas plant has around 50-60%. Both fare far better than a fossil engine at around 20%.
      And that’s not even taking into account the fact that fossil fuels account for a diminishing portion of electricity generation in most developed countries - less than 50% in the U.K for example, and in Norway (relevant for Bjørn’s case) 99% of electricity generation comes from hydro.

    • @SCfan84
      @SCfan84 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kardy12 well comparing like to like. If you pick a high number of the range for power stations (60%) then you have to pick a high number of the range for gas engines right (40%)? But then even if you start talking about transmission efficiency at 85% and charging efficiency of 90% then even the best case numbers start looking somewhat similar (0.85x0.9x0.6)=0.4ish. Granted the thermal efficiency of an engine rarely reaches this number as an average case except in hybrids like a prius.
      I'm not against electric cars, I actually own a smartfortwo and Ioniq plug in and I ride an ebike most of the time. But the improvements are more likely to more like 20-40% than orders of magnitude with current power generation mix. In the winter if you want heat I think even running a hybrid might be more efficient carbon wise.

      The snow would be a problem though... unless they build in a heater, since for a long duration storage you don't need to heat it all the time, only keep the glass a bit above zero while it actively snows, and then you can stop heating.

    10% vampire drain in 3 weeks is not a problem? I parked my Smart for 6 months and lost maybe 5%, if that, it was almost nothing. I would reconsider buying a Tesla unless I could store it without losing basically anything except natural battery losses, unless there is a way to trickle charge with a solar panel somehow. This is quite surprising. I wonder what my i3 will lose, will have to check the forums.

    I will definitely get the solar panel for my Cybertruck. Then you could leave the battery with a low charge when you leave and have it full when you get back 😉

      @@RadioactiveSaddam as he said, " It snowed melted and snowed again". In-between it was free, and not to mention that as soon as a little bit of the dark panel is free, the sun will warm it up and melt the snow from the rest of it. Which is normally the case when the snow gets heavy and it slides down the car a little bit.

    Well, it can obviously regen more, since 8 kW would go straight into heat to heat up the batterypack further, the rest is just the inefficiency of AC to DC conversion.
