Hello, this lesson is intended to teach the fundamentals of Beat-matching, the foundation of becoming a DJ.
I do not claim ownership to any tracks used in this video. Each song belongs to the artist who composed it
EDIT: Correction to info in the video! not every song has an 8 beat count. It depends on the time signature of the song. Please study basic music theory to gain a better understanding.

your correct. but from a basic stand point 2 measures is a better increment to mix in. other wise you will have things ariving at the wrong times. you also could have 3/4 time measures and 6/4 time measures. but the best time to mix in is 2 measures of 4/4
Thank you sir! Almost 7 years later your vid is still very useful.
bars are beats. its a slang name for it, used espicially used in the hiphop compunity. bpm and tempo tie closely together. the tempo of the song determines the bpm. you are correct, i simply changed the name bars to beats.
hey, to record go to the recording tab, then select where you want to save the file and what you want to call it. next get ready to start. press record when you are ready. continue until your finnished, then press the record button again to save the audio track
You sir, have taught me so well. I got into the tutorial so deeply and I am now improving! Thanks for the tutorial man! :)
its not the same as a volume. but its still a volume param. its like a combo of a volume fader and a limiter. it makes the maximum volume a track can play at as well as adjusts its volume. ive seen many djs use just the gain pot in there mixes. i use them both.
hope you keep up with the series! i release new tutorials all the time. glad the video helped you out. good luck djin!
Dude I've been trying to find a normal person talking about what I need to know not random shit. Thank you mate legend
Cheers!
typically, you want to keep in the "traditional" genre of controllers when your first starting out. ie. 2 platters a mixer and a few knobs. some good controllers like this are the ion "discover dj" the numark "idj" series or their "mixtrack" (i use this as a section of my setup). some things you may want to avoid when your starting out is clip launching controllers like the novation "launch pad" or the djtechtools "midifighter".you have to know the basic understanding of djing before using those
Thank you so much. You really explained the looping & the beat system very well. Good job.
Man, I like your style of teaching. Good job, kept simple, kept informative, well demonstrated. You've done good by your fellow artists and I appreciate it. It's helping me out a lot. Semper Fi - Lost Pr3acher
Cheers man! this is the oldest video of all time haha.
keep up with the series. i update it all the time!
Wow this is probably the best beginner tutorial for Mixing. Thank you so much bro, I'm completely new to mixing with Virtual DJ and this video helped me a lot.
a trick : you can watch movies at KaldroStream. I've been using them for watching lots of of movies these days.
@Ephraim Jake Definitely, I have been watching on kaldroStream for years myself =)
you see. thats the thing. gain is the amount of volume a certain track has in the mix. it sets the bar for the maximum sound that can come out of a single track.. but its still technically a volume parameter
this is the best and clear tutorial about beat matching that i find here in YT , very helpful , thanks man!
Julian, you know what? Yours the best tut ever! very in-depth and well explained in a dime all of the buttons, their functions and whatnots. kewl
Dude thanks, I've checked so much tutorials to use this thing but their also confusing your tutorials are great its simple to understand! subbed!
Glad I could be of help
try some basic house beats, like deadmau5, nero, wolfgang gartner, david guetta, tiesto, even some pop music would work. use what you have. it tends to work the best. for getting music, i either buy it from itunes, or get it online from various sites
thanks for this tutorial, i just started using vdj and pretty much enjoying it thus far.
You teaching skills are outstanding.. Thank you by the size of a tyrannosaurus
Stumbled upon this video and now I'm really excited to give it a try. Definately going to view more of your video's!
That's right koostaboosh I my exact words before I saw your comment, 'AMAZING TUTORIAL', very clear, concise and easy to understand.
+Christopher Degale Thank you!!
i am sooo thankful.. it was so difficult to find some beats but than I find your video and it was stunning
thank you for taking your time...to show us. thank you... now i need to see how u take bass or the voice out
I am a visual learner and in 15 mins you taught me skills and i feel like a pro.. Thank you for explaining it in that manner !! Now as a beginner which mixer controllers are the best and which one to stay away from???
I used to use Virtualldj allthough I moved on to Ableton after year or so. Still a great software to dj with.
Hey you know what gotta say I will watch this a few times. I love that you explained each tool on the controller and broke down the beats etc...other video I've watched I'm literally just watching them do it and not explain. Thanks;)
jackie Ferguson thank you!
for the most part. different genres have different "lights". i dont recomend going by the visual light or wav form though, you really want to use your ear and mix the beats by yourself
you usually tend not to mix in 7/4. for jazz tempos that have no set rythem you cannot use traktor, and have to do it manually in say, ableton live. 3/4 signatures are mixed the same as 4/4. boogie is a genre not a rythem type.
Thanks for the tutorial- just starting out with this, you make it look easy!
Wow Julian! Thanks a lot for this man. I learned so much about the structure of songs (8 count beats etc) and ofcourse djpro as well. Please keep up the phenomenal work
hey no problem! if you need any other support just ask!
I am literally brand new to all this, and this really helped me out, man.
No. you have to buy music on itunes or download music ofline.
try buying a usb sound card off of amazon. they go for around 5 to 20 dollars. get any controller that looks good to you. i recomend a cheaper one, to make sure you actually want to stick with djing.
I am from Los Angeles, and there's a guys here who does axcellent mixes called Raz Klinghoffer, you should check out his mixes their really good
wow. best tutorial i've seen so far!
still confused about the bars' subject but i'll run this tutorial few more times and hope i'll understand.
you're a great mixer and teacher! keep it comin'!
hope to see more tutorials from you soon! ;)

Thank you so much for this! I really want to try doing my own mixes but I never understood this program. You explained it really well!

how do you mix? it becomes second nature after awhile, but just learning this is pretty much how you do it
I can't stop saying thank you.. I really appreciate your video.. hope you can help me more... thanks DJ Julian Gray..
I like the way you explain thing with the DJ , so i will try it for myself .
Sick video bro and your a champion for sharing it all with us. Since watching ur tutorial ive learnt how to slowly mix. The basics that you explained really helped me become alot better. Cheers mate your an inspiration
you use your own. glad your interested!
Good video. You explained it very well. Better than the big name pros. They totally miss the 32 count phrase etc...keep it up....love Deadmau5 too.
hey, its the same as most other types of music. you just have to find songs with similar beats!
AMAZING TUTORIAL! Probably the best and most helpful one I've found
+koostababoosh Thanks Man! really apreciate it! Im planning on doing an updated remake! Subscribe for more!

They have been using it incorrectly for years & now I have it down packed thanks to you.
Thanks
CNO-OUT.
yeah i realized that aswell. i have a stronger knowledge now then i did back then, but i dont teach in vdj anymore so i have no intrest in remaking the video.
It seems this tutorial never gets old... Thank you!!! 👏 ❤️
Thank you!

i think it has pitch lock built in. if im correct

+Andrew To You're welcome!
it was pretty good,i am not a dj,just purchase mix track for fun I am 63 years old Canadian and I love music, you did a good job, good luck for you in future.joe
Love the demo! Can't wait to try it!
+Althea Richardson haha give it a go man!
im not trying to explain advanced music theory, im just trying to make it easy to learn to mix using basic theory. sorry if thats not enough for you.
why do you have them if you dont know how to use them? anyways, headphones are used to preview the second song before you fade it in. i use senheiser earbuds. i cant stand overear.
Thanks a lot! You explained each and every part of the DJ thing! Now I'm not a noob.
thanks. means alot. let me know if you want to learn anything!
That was the best tutorial iv'e seen so far. Thanks man
what do you mean? the sample that says my name? i made that myself in ableton live.
yes i very enjoy it. ive never really got into it before till i saw this tutorial.
Thanks. I surely have a lot of work to do today.
5 years on and your knowledge is relevant. That for the tutorial JG.
haha very old indeed!
thanks Julian you made it look so simple ,good work !!
Hey man cool stuff..!! Thanks for taking your time to educate us..! much appreciated..!
Hey man I'm new to mixing and this helped a lot thanks for taking the time to post this and help us out.
thanks a lot for the tutorial i really enjoy the beats u made in the tutorials i will try to improve on my DJ with this your tutorial
Hey man, this tutorial was so dam helpful to me. I study this in college, it helped me out like, I can't even describe it, so thanks dude, and great video!
Best tutorial I've found! Thanks bro
ok ill check it out
you cant see them in the video?
awesome vid bro..its my first time gettin in the dj scene but i have no idea what to do until now hahaha thanks again bro
i realize that now. the turn of the table has no corelation to the beat. i understand music theory. djs use different terms for things. read my response to magic creeper.
i use vengance sound packs, that i use to produce music. i choose some samples that i like and trigger them right before a drop
because house is simple to learn. and all others genres apply aswell
This video was amazingly helpful and the mix was really sick. I love it. Thank You so much for making this video, and actually walking us through it. :)
Gain is nooooooot the same thing as volume. Gain is the essentially how strong the signal is, where as volume is the actual output that you hear. Turning your gain up or down will change the volume but it also distorts the music. As you turn up your gain, the signal gets stronger and can cause your waveform to clip, meaning at the top/bottom it will flatten out against the ceiling, causing distortion, depending on whether it's hard clipping (where a large portion of the waveform is cut off) or soft clipping (where a small portion is cut off). That's why guitar distortion pedals typically use a gain knob to control the amount of distortion is applied to your signal. It is possible to use the gain knob to get more volume, but you need to watch your signal meter and make sure it doesn't turn red/max out, otherwise your mix will sound awful and if done for long enough, it will ruin your speakers.
OMG,
Im just new in mixing songs but when i watched this video, i feel like im a pro.
it help a lot
nice man!!!!!
hey no problem!
i am so glad you actually know what 4/4 time is unlike most musicians
Really great tutorials...
A beginner!! This is tough, need loads of practice. Thanks
You made it seem so easy... This weekend I'm going to work on one... Will make a video reply so you can critique me... Thanks man.... Very well done and best of luck to you
yes it is, but, you cant use controllers in the free version.
Just to let you know, the gain control sets the input level of your channel or deck. If you are peaking out and distorting the music on your input, you turn down the gain to bring the input level down to a level to stop the distortion. The volume faders raise and lower the overall volume of the track or deck. If you have an improper gain structure your music is going to sound like shit all night. It does not do the same thing as the volume fader.
Thats because it is mixed well. lol :) if you want ill do a video on loops and cues
This is a great tutorial! i want/need to learn more!
9 years late But damn this good juliann👏🏽
