Dominic Alston thats honestly fantastic information! thank you for your insight. Please tell me where he specified that he was talking about house music.
this is the greatest thing I have ever seen in my entire life. this is your legacy. Remember that. The Internet is forever. And this was useful information in the 1970’s.
orrr you could just beatmatch by putting the tune in, speeding up or slowing down the track using the side of the cdjs platter wheel and adjust the pitch accordingly depending on whether you had to speed it up or slow it down. Instead of taking like 4 mins to go through the whole pitch range lol
This guy definitely used to play vinyl from the way he "throws" the track in instead of finding the first beat and cueing it up instead like most DJs do nowadays.
I see lot of people use controllers and heavily reliant on the sync button, but when their tracks won't sync, if the computer has trouble processing it, then there puzzled, its why you should always rely on your good old fashioned ear, its makes you a better DJ and its much more of a buzz mixing that way, even with CDJ's, you don't gain completely accurate ear for mixing as using vinyl is the the most fundamental method way of mixing
yeah man. I dj only at home after retiring from the mobile scene, and I met this "club dj wannabe" that she went to a bar with 1200's and she didn't know what to do, but the club owner insisted on using their equipment. she ended up walking out of the club and people got pissed off.
I don't do that spin on the jog-wheel to sync, simply hit cue button on every four count. Don't follow the CDj's BPM counters they are never accurate, the jog-wheel goes clockwise when trying to sync if turn back the jog-wheel your track needs to slow down if you have to move it up your track is going too slow, your tracks are ready to be mixed perfectly once your sync track can be beatmatched at least at a 32 count beat. real DJ's beatmatch by ear, anyone can mix with a computer. The mixing itself is another skill knowing how to work with Mids Highs Lows and Gain.
the bpm counters are usually accurate when you scan through recordbox first. but yea on CDJ 900s you needed to beatmatch by ears. These didn't even have a synch
I normally post only positive comments, but I don't think this video explained the process, nor was the end result sounding very good. Perhaps a re-shoot with better explanation and a more clear result. This video seemed almost as if you were trying to figure it out yourself as you are trying to teach how to do it.
Vinyl is much less accurate, cause due to air friction or something, the bpm of a song in a serato vinyl constantly changes by 0.1. which actually is a lot.
***** What Is wrong with using the sync button! So narrow minded. It's the same principle as telling an F1 driver he's not allowed to use flappy paddle gearbox. I use the sync button to instantaneously get my tracks in sync so I can remix 4 tracks together with ease, where as manual beat-matching would not allow for this. Where some more modern DJ's lack skill in the art of beat-matching they use that time to make up for it in more creative ways, and often this translates to the crowd better!
CDJs are very fun. I also have a Pioneer DDJ-T1 controller and thats fun too. Very similar to CDJs. But there's nothing like going back to your roots and loading a record onto the platter, setting the pitch, licking your finger tips, back spinning, twisting the center...
It's pretty easy to beatmatch when the CD decks tell you the bpm and and keep the grooves locked unlike records. So all the CD DJs talking shit about Traktor and the sync button should really STFU. Try riding the pitch while mixing on vinyl, completely different ballgame.
I own and use a Denon DN-MC6000 with traktor.... But I still fucking agree so hard. I always go to my neighbrs and mix on his Techs. nothing is better.
Since when does beat matching distinguishes good Dj's apart from bad ones. Haha bad example since in the past it would be very much that. He has CDj's which display the tempo on the LCD screen, and this is correct 95% of the time and almost 100% of the time for house with a regular 4/4 Beat. This eliminates the need for using your ears for this, you can even use a sync button to get them in time near to 100% of the time. Instead of wasting time beat matching, use your time to be creative and mash up, scratch and live remix not to beat match. What separates good and bad Dj's these days is their creativity. ( I know this vid is made 4 years ago but still with his expensive decks he's lying if he says he beat matches, or he's and idiot or I'm mistaken that his decks have sync function)
Hallelujah ! someone is speaking the truth right here ! cause yeah , beatmashing is pretty cool when your only job as a dj is to switch from deck A to deck B and the track running is an 8 min long generic house track, but THEN when playing hip hop with 3 decks at once, have fun syncing the acapella while scratching and adding effects...
The second you press sync is the second you stop you cease to be a DJ and start being an Ipod with legs. Real Djs do all that while beatmatching. It's the foundation you have to learn before those tricks are learnt otherwise everyone in the world would be a DJ because it takes five minutes with all the tech out today
Depending on your equipment, you can beat match as many songs or loops as you have decks available. For instance, Traktor 2 allows four track decks or up to 16 sample decks which can all be beat matched/ synced
Sam Taiwo ***** Yeah haha that thing is a 2000 right he has a fucking sync button, i mean yeah u should lear whats on the video, but everyone syncs is not cheating
Still there is a costly display which displays the BPM's, you can just move the pitch control to match the decks BPM's. Also this guy is teaching beginners how to essentially mix, it is most like they will using vdj's with a sync function as vdjs are cheap. Don't also give me, ohh you need to be able to beatmatch for oldschool songs with real drummers, because this DJ plays straight house!
Um, if the left song is playing at 128 BPM, why would you go through the whole pitch range ? Just put the right deck to 128 BPM aswell, beatmatch a bit, and done! Jesus, no 9:35 long vid. needed for something simple as that !
I taught myself to beat match using an old pitch adjustable tape player. Years ago. You can match things up within a few seconds with practice. Then need to leave them playing for longer to get them closer. Pretty much all of the big names adjust the EQ to kill the bass on one of the tracks. That tends to hide slightly out of sync tracks. Swap the bass EQ over at some point in the cross over.
Glad to see an up and coming DJ. I actually just found these guys, and their advice is pretty sound. Just hit up their site and vids and you'll get a good basic understanding. Everything past that, though, is just actually doing it.
here's how i see it: anyone who wants to play out and consider themself a dj needs to put in the time to learn how to beatmatch, 1 because if you don't you are a human jukebox 2 you may find yourself in a situation where you don't have your trusty sync button and you will be in a world of trouble 3 the guy in this video is right about one thing, it does feel good when you finally get it
i like how you show beginners overpitching, i think it is an awesome technique, it is how i learned to beatmatch. i think what you do here is awesome, i really really like and ejoy it, even though i don´t require help no more :) i mix with vinyl, i like how you don´t use the cue button because people might have turntables and there u got no cue right... i think this is about the best video about beatmatching out there. gratz, i will share this vid so you get recognized!
DUDE!!! ive just spent about 30 mins trying to that very song because couldn't spell Francois Dubois and there's a lot of songs called blood. was just stumbling around the comment section to see if any one had put the name of the artist and song in there. when i found your comment i thought you were spaming a link to one of your videos or something but went there out of curiosity. but when i saw the the title... I SHIT BRICKS i know this is probably 3 months too late but THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!
I have the sync button on my mixtrack pro, but i usually don't use it. I just like having it there just in case i don't have enough time to beatmatch the 2 songs together. When you are DJing a house party and everyone is hyped up on soda, you definitely don't want the music to stop.
some newer models of the pioneer cdj actually show the bpm of the songs so you can easily adjust the bpm of the song, then use this kind of method for more fine tuning. Or if you're using serato scratch live or traktor scratch, the bpm will be displayed on your interface on the laptop :) (for those that don't know). Great video
Thanks for the tutorial ! just bought a 'Numark Mixtrack Pro' and I want to recommend that mixer to anyone who's starting 'djing' btw; Sorry for bad english
Some tracks the way they are produced naturally slightly fade off 4:4 point as they progress, if you don't know how to adjust that as it goes you'll have times where you totally bomb. Plus you'll mess up the next track as well and so on and so forth. Not enough people have trained ears and if you learn to beatmatch you're training your ears which is an extremely significant and important DJing skill.
A controller is an all in one unit, two decks and a mixing section, 2 to four channels on the mixing section also, so you wouldn't need a mixer if you had a DJ controller.
A sync button probably means different things on different pieces of equipment or in different software programs. On most software programs it means "auto-sync". I think what you are describing as sync is more often called "cue".
when you talk, it reminds me why people learn music terminology. cool songs you used doe. Anyone that can incorporate Kenny G gets some props. one love
Start with Vinyl if you can use those ears! dont rely to much on the beat counters tempo etc thats how you will really understand whats going on, i’ve got my first big club night in a few years after starting off with vinyl now CDJ-2000s my friend asked me if i was bricking it, my response Vinyl boys dont brick it, i’m excited i’ll maybe make a few mistakes so what i dont own a pair of 2000s but i’ll rely on hearing and understanding of timing and that is the ultimate skill wish me luck!!
You acctually dont need to stop it every time. If you use your jog wheel to slow the track down, or touch the plattern if you use vinyls, at the same time as you turn your pitch down you can beatmatch faster. Wich can come in handy if the track your playing just have 30 sec left and you need to beatmatch fast. Practise and enjoy
@6196Ruben ,i agree with u in that point, now dayz anyone can dj just cuz they have that beat matching machine, when i started djing in 93,i started off on some belt drive shitty eq,and moved up and up till i finally got 12s,but there are alot of djs these days that really dont no how to beat match, they have the setup on there serato or whatever that really all u have to do is throw the next track in and out just at the right time, but ur right anyone can dj these days cuz all the new technolgy.
you are absolutely right. You must have the ear and the heart , mind and soul to feel the music , Then thats where and when the beatmatching comes in. You have the library of music , tear this shit up . . you are in control , and you know this ! later. i got some mixes and not even done with the library yet. but ill take some of these beats and make a mix. later
You're bringing in Health and Safety into the argument. Being a dentist is not the same as being a deejay. Becoming a true deejay is having the skills and putting in a lot of time and dedication. Being a doctor is the same, but new technology helps both the patient and dentist so that it is done PROPERLY. The Sync button is referred to as 'cheating' due to the lack of effort, and also a bitter lack of passion of the occupation. Personally, I think that it defies the whole meaning of 'Deejay'...
I started out with with Virtual DJ, the software is easy usually free when you buy a Hercules mixer. I dont know if you shop at Guitar Center because I know they carry tHercules mixer. You wont have to spend a lot. I have been using my Hercules Mixer for years but this year I am upgrading to the NUMARK NS7. Goodluck!
Ofcourse it can be both! That shouldn't be a problem. Only the thing that you have to keep in thoughed is that the song will get an end so cut/fade the sample/loop at the right time for the new song coming in! Otherwise you would get an awefull silence.
@Kammenz for a first set is numark mixtrack pro for $250, i had it for the frist one, and it was really easy to use. You get the hang of it really fast.
This is true. I learned on vinyl, now a controller user, and beatmatching is an important skill. However, even on CDJs it's braindead easy because they have BMP displays. It's not very hard to move your pitch slider until the numbers are the same and wait until the end of the 16th bar to start the next track. I really feel the focus on beatmatching is completely overblown. It took me 2-3 months of practice to do it on vinyl. There is so much more to mixing than just beatmatching.
Sometimes even the sync functions of the dj software fail, because the beatgrid may have been set off beat by the software (this sometimes happens!) or the bpm has been analyzed falsely. What you need then are exactly the skills of setting a good cue point and pitch bending properly, which are explained here. Back then I also started with vinyl and CDs just like here. Thats why I understand very well whats happening when I use Traktor Pro or Serato for mixing.
"138bpm Kick me in the face Rave techno trance stuff?"
Thats a the bpm for a rave at a retirement home…
Not if it is house music you tool. That is far too fast for house.
Dominic Alston thats honestly fantastic information! thank you for your insight. Please tell me where he specified that he was talking about house music.
The fact that this DJ video is teaching with playing HOUSE MUSIC. And please tell where he specified any faster types
of music?
gotta have hhhoouussee music all fucking night long. This age bracket knows shit about that
Some people shouldn't teach if they can't even do it right.
this is the greatest thing I have ever seen in my entire life.
this is your legacy. Remember that. The Internet is forever. And this was useful information in the 1970’s.
You, my good sir, are awesome.

Instead of taking like 4 mins to go through the whole pitch range lol
Why insist on restarting the song? By the time you have it synced the other song has already stopped playing.
I've heard more than a few DJs who could use this practice. Great basic video thats easy to watch and understand. Thanks!
This guy definitely used to play vinyl from the way he "throws" the track in instead of finding the first beat and cueing it up instead like most DJs do nowadays.

Beat Fed back in the day I relied on two turntables 2000 watts of house music and my left ear...I did great
dj decimator what a waste all these jocks should be using tt but it's the digital age I still have tt but I do have my digital denon mx4000

your right there is a hell of a lot more to it, track selection, how to build a set, read a crowd etc etc etc :)
wow this is terrible lol
+jphelpz you just saved me 10 min. love you even more now
jphelpz it is pretty cringy 😬
This guy moved to Nashville after his DJ career never took off and tried to become a country artist

That's very useful! Thanks!
Air friction doesn't matter. It is Serato's problem.
why not just say look at the bpm and put them to the same bpm
+Matt Griffin ikr lol
that s what fake djs do
You're a good teacher !!! thanks :)
That was really a nice exercise! I learned something-
I do this on my iPhone with Djay2
Explain?
no I don't. and even if I did its still mixing. if I was at a party I am still providing music. HATER

it's about respect for the earlier times of dj'ing. choose for yourself if you want to learn to beatmatch or not.
Amen, I'm a producer and an ameteur DJ and I caught that instantly.

@HowToDjFastdotcom when it comes to beatmatching, does it have to be 2 song or can it be 1 song and 1 sample/loop ??
