Agreed. Tom Baker is 'my' Doctor but pertwee is definatly my 2nd favourite. Mainly because Tom is actually mad in real life as well as on screen. Both were/are amazing.
The two only performances anyone has ever heard of 🤣 except a drunken sailor in a single episode of Black Adder. His Sherlock Holmes wasn't among the best. Completely love the man though, and his wicked sense of humour.
The truth when Tom relays that many unhappy couples stay together simply because they can’t afford to separate. Then, they are relegated to spend the remainder of their lives refining how they torture each other - chills.
Well Knox, I think that for a lot of us Americans Tom Baker is Dr Who, since we were acquainted with Dr Who 4 first. And IMHO, he was the best Dr for what I have seen, having just the right touch of humor. I remember my little daughter crying when he died (regenerated).
@@jimnewcombe7584No, I don't think so. Tom Baker was the Doctor when the show first came to the United States. So no doubt that is why he mentioned being American in his statement.
KnoxvilleGuy2: I urge you to check out the Big Finish Audios. Tom has recently joined Doctors 5-8 in playing the role in full-blooded audio dramas. And he's jolly good in them. Similarly Big Finishes anniversary release 'Light at the End' features Tom, Peter, Colin, Sylvester, and Paul in a multi-Doctor extravaganza. He comes over well, and is clearly engaged with Who again; he plays the Doctor regularly! I don't doubt he has terrible off days though;it took years for him to work with Big Finish
I think if they do an anniversary it might include christopher ecc and definately david tennant, as well as one of the surviving previous doctors, probably Peter Davison as he's the only one who hasn't aged beyond the point where he can't play himself (and he's repriesed the role in the past in 'Time Crash', so..)
Most of the companions are still alive, including two of the first three: William Russell and Carole Ann Ford. I'm hoping they'll both be in the 50th anniversary special.
Yes - born Jan so 100% age forty when filming the role. Oh well - close enough considering it's a common mistake most people make trying to think what age they were when such and such happened. Maybe he got given the role while still just about 39?
Yes of course, he stated that he felt it was too soon after his leaving to come back. However years later he said it was a decision he regreted now. But in the case of the 50th, look up the interview of Tom Baker "Will Tom Baker appear in Doctor Who's 50th Anniversary"
It looks like they may have to come up with a story line that allows more than 13 doctors -- they already had a doctor "between regenerations" in the Trial of a Time Lord -- the Valeyard.
Both McCoy (with a wig perhaps) and Paul McGann could reprise their roles as well. McGann seemingly hasn't even aged a day since his appearance as the doctor. I remember McCoy bringing up the idea of the past doctors and companions doing cameos instead of reprising their earlier roles. That would be fun to see as well.
Maybe he just had a bunch of " off days " when this acquaintance - & some other people - met him. When DW made its debut in the U.S., Tom Baker made a heckuva impression.
@notaphaser they don't all have to make it. in the five doctors they got a William Hartnel lookalike to play the first doctor. though I must admit I never saw the five doctors so I don't know if he was a worthy replacement
Actually, Hartnell's role has been re-cast once before: Richard Hurndall portrayed the 1st Doctor in the 20th anniversary episode, "The Five Doctors." Sadly, they would now have to re-cast Doctors 1-3. So long as the new actors bear resemblance to their predecessors (as Hurndall did to Hartnell), it could definitely be done. For instance, actor Martin Jarvis looks rather like Jon Pertwee, and I think he would make a great 3rd Doctor should the role be revived.
I think they'll just do "The Three Doctors: Part 2" with Eccelston, Tennant and Smith. I'd love to see some classic Doctors, but I don't think it will happen.
well sadly it'd probably be the 7 doctors, as the first doctor has been dead for many years, and I doubt they'd want to cast someone to play Mr Hartnell's role for him.
I actually think he doesn't watch the show any more, and likely hasn't seen much of the new series. Just n educated guess (I get this impression from various interviews he's done).
Hasn't Tom Baker always refused to get on stage with another Dr in a Dr Who program? In the 5 Doctors to get him in, they apparently had to use an unreleased clip from the unreleased Shada & claim he got stuck in the Time Vortex
Tom said he did not want to do the Five Doctors because it was too soon after he left the series. Jon Pertwee said Tom did not want to do it because he (Tom) had to be center of the story when it honestly Peter’s story. Back then Pertwee and Baker could not even be at the same convention because of this personality conflict.
Nah, I would like to see Matt Smith and Tom Baker as the Doctors in one special, that would be brilliant and they could have the line: "Why do you wear a bow tie?" "I love bow ties, bow ties are cool! What about you and that very long scarf of yours? Where did you get it from?!"
Honestly, I'm kind of glad the Doctor Who movie of the 90's didn't catch on in America much like the US Red Dwarf pilot, can you imagine how much they would have butchered it?
Americans are Never this honest in an interview! there is even a talk show host that will make people eat disgusting foods rather than say a negative thing in front of a camera. There were several times in his book I wanted to hug him and several times I wanted to give him a good smack upside the head. But indeed, I do adore him.
I love his sense of humour.
Agreed. Tom Baker is 'my' Doctor but pertwee is definatly my 2nd favourite. Mainly because Tom is actually mad in real life as well as on screen. Both were/are amazing.
Such an effortless performance, every interview is riveting
Great interview, best one I've seen so far
Always the best Doctor!
Err, Troughton.
Tom Baker is the best doctor.
🤣
Love his voice SO much.
I love this man.
Love Tom Baker!
Tom Baker, please come back in the 50th Anniversary!
you got your wish :)
you bet he was!..only Doctor that was unique in all believable ways!!
He's awesome.
It doesn’t matter what Tom Baker does he’s great at what he. Does whether it’s the golden voyage of Sinbad. Or Doctor Who he was great in both
The two only performances anyone has ever heard of 🤣 except a drunken sailor in a single episode of Black Adder.
Where does the Doctor end and Tom Baker start? I've seen a few interviews with him now and it seems he was just playing himself all those years.
Well Knox,
I think that for a lot of us Americans Tom Baker is Dr Who, since we were acquainted with Dr Who 4 first. And IMHO, he was the best Dr for what I have seen, having just the right touch of humor. I remember my little daughter crying when he died (regenerated).
Surely that depends what generation or decade you were born into, rather than being American.
@@jimnewcombe7584No, I don't think so. Tom Baker was the Doctor when the show first came to the United States. So no doubt that is why he mentioned being American in his statement.
I remember recording this on video and when I played it back it was black and white! obviously something went wrong.
Thank you!!
ruthlessly honest is Tom
what a fantastic man
This is a fantastic interview. from the 1990s?
He was on about the TV movie (American co production) so it would be around 1999-2000
@@thomcaffrey4167 No, the TV Movie came out in 1996, it was only set in 1999.
@@thecelticdruid.6681 Ahhh ok
He was so cute back in the day
Fantasic book!
brilliant interview
This is what you call an interview

Sadly Russell died a few weeks ago.
Actually Tom was born in 1934, so when he took the role of the Doctor in 1974, he would have been at least 39 !
Yes - born Jan so 100% age forty when filming the role.

I think there should be the 3 doctors, with the obvious 3, that would be EPIC!
Tom Baker now lookslike Jon Pertwee Doctor 3 LOL
Maybe he just had a bunch of " off days " when this acquaintance - & some other people - met him. When DW made its debut in the U.S., Tom Baker made a heckuva impression.
well here we are they made it!
basically everyone who followed is doing him to some extent
and that's exactly the way it ought to be
hello, folks. I am not a native English speaker. Big fan of Tom though. what did he say at 6:40 (about his mother words before her death)?
"I just want to out live that old goat in the next room" ?
ngNudraconis Yes
Tom baker was good I met him once god he is tall
I remember seeing him in a Robin hood movie as the Sherrif. I was shocked!lol.
@notaphaser they don't all have to make it. in the five doctors they got a William Hartnel lookalike to play the first doctor. though I must admit I never saw the five doctors so I don't know if he was a worthy replacement
It's not nonsense, it's not rubbish, it's not not not not!
Very rarely i say legend
You heard wrong. Seemed nice when I met him.

Sean Pertwee is the very picture of his father, now. He could reprise the 3rd Doctor in a cameo appearance.
He was 40 when he got the role of the Doctor. Not 37.
Bit late to correct them!
I think they'll just do "The Three Doctors: Part 2" with Eccelston, Tennant and Smith. I'd love to see some classic Doctors, but I don't think it will happen.
It wasn't even that, sadly. Eccleston is the new Tom.
He sounds the same and all he has to do is wear his hat....he needs to come back!
I have a question for you all, what episode is that in which they played of Doctor Who?
"We've heard the last of it I'm afraid"........I'm afraid we haven't
My favorite Doctors :
1. Tom Baker
2. Jon Pertwee
3. Patrick Troughton
4. Peter Davison
Peter Davison so rarely makes the list: good to see he's getting a look-in!
aparently he is the same off set he is awesomely crazy
Don' t you mean Eric Idle, instead? This face hit me first in my mind, when I saw him.
well sadly it'd probably be the 7 doctors, as the first doctor has been dead for many years, and I doubt they'd want to cast someone to play Mr Hartnell's role for him.

Weird, must be in 1996. Shame about the TV movie, Paul McGann is such a fantastic Doctor in the Big Finish stuff.
"all he had to do was speak complete rubbish with conviction..." But enough of your career, Richard, how's Tom Baker getting on?
Nah, I would like to see Matt Smith and Tom Baker as the Doctors in one special, that would be brilliant and they could have the line: "Why do you wear a bow tie?" "I love bow ties, bow ties are cool! What about you and that very long scarf of yours? Where did you get it from?!"
Amusing reading this years later.
Honestly, I'm kind of glad the Doctor Who movie of the 90's didn't catch on in America much like the US Red Dwarf pilot, can you imagine how much they would have butchered it?
No way Tom Baker is much better looking than Prince Charles LOL
The interviewer looks like he Grahm Chapman from Monty Python.
Didn't even remember his own son. Tragic.
I'd say he looks a bit like Bill Clinton instead. XD
I’m assuming this interview was from 1996-2000? They mentioned the crappy ‘96 tv movie 😂😂
The book was published in 97, so I'm guessing that's the year!
Cool... It appears that Tom Baker is more rational than I suspected. ;O)
Katalyzt
Tom Baker was cool..
I want to be an orphan.
OMG Tom Baker looks like a smiling Bill Clinton. No offence to Tom Baker. His voice is still classic. Blessings FLETCHER
I've always thought Tom Baker was someone who is deeply religious and hides behind the jokes.
hmmm
Well, he is known to be eccentric, both in the good & bad ways.
A Labourer pmsl
HOW BLEEPED UP IS THAT !

Dude you're not Batman!
Yeah Bill Clinton too
What is cheap about the Bible?
Such a dry, dry sense of humour. Lol
"I still read my Bible because I love cheap lurid melodrama."
Smith is terrible. Just my Opinion.
Amazing interview
