I would want to be next to you when Tom stepped out of that Tardis as the 4th Doctor. Like you I started with the New series, then started watching the classic series. When I got to the 4th Doctor Tom Baker blew me away. I have seen all the incarnations now and It was Tom Baker's phenomenal portrayal that made me finally say I found the actor who was born to play the Doctor. All the actors have been good but I have never had that reaction to anyone else in the role.

Well, if you hold him to the standard of The Doctor, you may well be disappointed. If you hold him to the standard of mere mortal, perhaps your expectations would be more realistic. He's not that different from the rest of us: fallible, flawed, human.
His appearance on the special was magical. He never stopped being the Doctor.
