  • Now that cold weather is here, I thought it was time to make a cozy robe inspired by Downton Abbey and the designs of Paul Poiret.

A beautiful robe that I can absolutely. imagine being worn by Cora in Downton Abbey. I especially love the sleeve design. The combination of the blue velvet and the lace is lovely.

What a gorgeous robe! I want to up my robe/loungewear game in 2023, and this is beautiful inspiration. And congrats on your upcoming wedding! This will be a wonderful addition to that day.

    Wonderfull! Fantastic!
I made myself a traditional woman's Kimono for my robe.
    Robes are Lux.
Cats world wide sure do love the cutting out of fabric sewing projects. It's a thing.

You can use a thick towel, in place of a needleboard. The robe is gorgeous! So are your helpers...

I've also heard you can use a piece of scrap velvet in place of a needle-board.

    Beautiful work. Well done.
I hope you had a good holiday and that the new year brings you and yours nothing but joy. Cheers!
Congratulations on your upcoming wedding. The only thing that helped to keep my sanity during the run-up to ours 25 years ago was to try to remember that we're throwing a party for our friends, who just happened to have just shared a major moment in our lives. That. And throwing away the 'wedding planning' books - especially the etiquette ones... Lord, but they are bossy...

This inspired me to look at some Paul Poiret designs and I can understand your desire for the vibe. His designs were so...luxurious but cutting edge. And your robe is superb.

Really elegant robe you stitched up. Velvet is murder to work with, it puckers, difficult to sew/iron but your robe came out ok!

Oh my G-d! I even don't know where to start!!! Congratulations! What an exciting news! Are you planning to do anything else for your wedding? The robe is beautiful, you will be fabulous in it! (And yeah, I'm slightly jealous :D )

Take care of yourself! Organizing a wedding can be super overwhelming, so do what is the best for you :) Congrats again and wishing you the very best!

Love to know your fitting process, do you add extra wide seam allowance then baste it, fit it, before you sew it? Do you add extra seam allowance to be able to take it out later if you need to change the garment if your size changes in the future?

Great question! I did cut it with an extra wide seam allowance (mostly because I thought the fabric would shift around as I cut out the pattern pieces) and then basted closer to the actual 1/4 seam allowance if that makes sense. Highly recommend the pattern (and, of course, the trim)!

Velvet is a pain to sew lol.
