Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 - Setup & Demo

  • SUBSCRIBE - In this video we look at the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 Second Generation USB audio interface, see what's included, and set it up.
    I am on Windows, so we will install the provided driver, if you are on Mac, there is no driver needed.
    The Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 is a small, but capable USB 2.0 audio interface. It has 2 inputs that accept an XLR or 1/4" input, and 2 balanced 1/4" outputs. The unit is bus powered, meaning it is powered by the computer (no need to plug in to an outlet)
    This is a well made and premium feeling audio interface, even though it's very inexpensive. The brushed aluminum shell looks great and protects the interface from damage.
    It has all the features you need to get recording fast. The two included preamps have 50db of gain (which is a lot for an interface in this price range) and each input has glowing halos that alert you to your input levels. Green = Good, Red = Bad (clipping).
    The 2i2 does not use the Focusrite Control software. If you want that, you need to get the 6i6 or above. But all the controls you need are right on the interface, such as direct monitoring.
    The bottom line is that this interface features a lot for the money. This is an interface I would recommend if you are new to recording or you want something that is small and portable.
    You'll even get a couple included DAWs, and several free plugins. Plus, every couple of months Focusrite features new free plugins for people who own Focusrite audio interfaces. We'll take a look at this in the video as well.

    Great video. I was wondering what you would recommend for me, the solo or 2i2. I am going to be rapping and using an XLR mic. I don’t really need multiple inputs for guitar/multiple mics. However, is the audio quality difference worth the money difference?

    • @BenoniStudio
      @BenoniStudio  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There won't be a difference in audio quality, but you between those two options I would go with the 2i2. That second mic pre-amp will come in handy and the cost difference is slight.

      BenoniStudio would a 2i4 be even better? Since it has MIDI input as well

    • @BenoniStudio
      @BenoniStudio  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends on what you need. Most MIDI gear today can be plugged in via USB. I haven't used MIDI cables in years. My controller or MIDI keyboard get plugged directly into a USB port so no need for the MIDI ports on my interface. But if you have MIDI gear that needs MIDI ports, then I would go for the 2i4 or similar. Check out the PreSonus Studio C series as well. They are pretty nice too. As long as you are laying down the cash you might want to at least consider the 6i6 the new 4i4 or PreSonus 68c

    Hello BenoniStudio, I own a Fractal Audio AX8 which has its own amp/effects modeling. How would I connect the AX8 so I am not using the amp modeling etc which I believe the DAW has (e.g.. ProTools first). I am considering buying the 2i2 or the 6i6 which doesn't seem to be on Focusrite website. Is the AX8 (preset) used as a plugin on the Focusrite? Since the AX8 costs over $1K I would think it has better amp and effects modeling than what comes with the ProTools First? Not sure how and what cables to connect guitar -> AX8 -> Focusrite -> to PC (windows). I also have powered monitor which has XLR. AX8 has both XLR and regular guitar cables.

    • @BenoniStudio
      @BenoniStudio  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You would take the main outs into a line input of your Focusrite. Or SPDIF if it has that.

      @@BenoniStudio Thanks so much for your reply. Sorry to bother you as I am a novice. 1. How would I be able to use the amp modeling in my fractal audio AX8. 2. my mic is a dynamic mic sm58 vs condenser mic. will that work and does the 6i6 have a preamp built in? 3. how do I connect my powered monitor to the foucusrite 6i6? 4. what is the best approach to listen to my friends vocals track and then record a guitar track on top of it? I guess I can't do #3 and #4 at the same time.

    • @BenoniStudio
      @BenoniStudio  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Guitar in to AX8, Main Output to Scarlett Line in. Create a track in your DAW with proper input channels.
      2. 6i6 has 2 mic pre-amps on the front. They will work with ANY XLR mic.
      3. Connect monitors to the rear LINE OUTPUTS using 1/4" TRS cables.
      4. Import the vocal track into your DAW. Play your guitar along with the track.

    If I change my sound on my computer to my USB audio interface as you did in 7:44, would I still be able to hear sounds from my computer playing through my studio monitor speakers? Because I would still like to follow and hear youtube tutorials while being able to hear and play my guitar at the same time.

    • @BenoniStudio
      @BenoniStudio  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, but you have a bit of a misconception. You can have different audio interfaces for the PC and DAW. Meaning you could use the Scarlett as the interface for your DAW and use your integrated sound card for computer sounds. Any computer sounds (TH-cam, browser, etc...) would come out of the computer speakers, and the DAW sounds would come out of the Scarlett. If you switch the PC sound source to the Scarlett, then ALL audio will be routed through the Scarlett. You could do it either way and still listen to TH-cam tutorials.

    • @Lusin333
      @Lusin333 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BenoniStudio Thanks for answering! I haven't used an audio interface with studio monitor speakers ever so I was worried that I would be switching between my the sound coming from my PC and the sounds coming from my DAW. Glad to know that I could have all the audio through my audio interface and studio monitors. Now I can actually go and buy the stuff!

    im a complete noob with this, so...
    1) with my guitar - can I just use the scarlett as an amp? or do I have to record everytime I want to play on my axe?2)If I have a standard tuned guitar, can you get/use software to convert your sound to a different tuning?

    • @BenoniStudio
      @BenoniStudio  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Scarlett is an Audio Interface, not an amp. It takes sound from the inputs (analog) and turns it into data that the computer can understand (digital). The Scarlett itself makes no sound. So, no, you can't use it as an amp.
      What you can do, is use a guitar amp plugin (standalone or in a DAW) and use the Scarlett as your audio interface for input and output. You don't have to actually record, but you will need a plugin of some kind to be your digital amp, unless you just want a dry sound.
      2: There are many plugins that can change pitch, but it's not going to sound natural if you are doing anything complex. Auto-Tune, Melodyne, a basic pitch shift plugin, etc.... But, its better to just tune your guitar.

    I have to say I’m delighted with my Focusrite bundle. Paid about £20 more for the table mic arm and pop filter. The registered number is on the box but the bundle code IS ON THE INSIDE OF THE BOX STUCK TO THE SURFACE OF THE BOX. I have GarageBand so didn’t bother with the free software and as I’ve an iMac I didn’t need the Focusrite drivers anyway. This is a good demo. I would warn folks that using Windows machines, there can be a lot of adjusting the default settings on your computer. Also I am not able to use both channels at the same time, even after increasing the buffer size, and going through all of the trouble shooting doccumentation from Focusrite, this seems to be a problem with the unit needing too much current from the computer's USB port to drive both inputs, the result is if you use two channels, one of the channels will be distorted, even though the input levels are below the clipping level. No help from Focusrite.

    • @konjunto2477

      By using to channel do you mean a mic into the lefinput and a guitar plugged into the right inputat the same time. I am new to this . I just ordered my 2i2 and will receive it around 4/8 due to the skeleton crew work force. Thanks to anyone that can amswer this.

    • @SeadartVSG
      @SeadartVSG 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@konjunto2477 Yes essentially that is correct Since I posted this I have tried a large number of fixes, now the problem seems to be intermittent, (does not happen all the time). I'm not sure what parameter helped fix the problem. I stopped using a mixing box for the vocal mike before going into the 2i2, and I have my guitar pedal board going into the left channel and my vocal reverb/compression pedal going into the right. It seems there is little playroom from having a weak single to a signal that clips. Be sure to follow the set up instructions in the quick start form that comes with the interface, it gets you registered and gives you the correct update.

      You need the ASIO driver for this interface to work correctly (on Windows). Why can't you install the driver?

    Just to get it right: if I'm only recording my voice and want to hear the beat from my daw (through headphones) the only cable going from my laptop to the scarlett is a usb cable. It transfers a signal in and out? Im sorry im a tech noob, but your video was awesome and helpful!

    • @BenoniStudio
      @BenoniStudio  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes. An audio interface includes something called an A/D and D/A (Analog to Digital and Digital to Analog converter)
      If you were to plug a guitar into input 1, the pre-amp amplifies the signal and sends it to the converter where the analog sound is turned into digital information sent through the USB cable and recorded in your DAW.
      But of course we (humans) can't HEAR digital (numbers/0s & 1s) so the sound from the DAW is sent back to the audio interface via the USB cable where it turns that digital information back into analog sound that we can hear through headphones or speakers. The analog signal is essentially electrical impulses (from the interface) that cause speakers to move and create sound waves that then hit our ear drums causing the same vibration of the eardrums based on the frequency of the waveform.
      This eardrum vibration is then converted to electrical impulses by the auditory nerve that our brains can understand as sound, words, music, melody, notes/pitch, etc...
      TL;DR
      Yes, all you need is the USB cable. If you want to hear sound though, you must have headphones or speakers connected to the audio interface.

    I’m a new beginner & I have already have Ableton live installed in my MacBook Pro Mid 2012 MacOS Catalina because it came with my M-audio controller so I wanted to know that if I buy this interface can I just plug it in & set it under in Ableton live 11 & just start recording? Because I don’t care about the free plugins because I know better free VST plugins that I can use with Ableton

    What's your opinion in buying a very lightly used like new Focusrite 2i2 on Facebook? What should I check to make sure everything is working well. Is it worth to buy this if there is a $60-80 reduction on price or to go buy a new one spending that extra money without taking any risk. Can you please explain the possible downside on such a purchase. So I can decide if should spend that extra dollars and buy a brand new one. Thanks. Awaiting your response

    6:45 maybe I'm just confused but why would you want to do this optional step? Will this step make it so that if I connect a synth to the audio interface, connect that audio interface to my computer, and connect the audio interface to external speakers, I can hear EVERYTHING from the speakers - both the synth and whatever I'm playing on my DAW, etc? For context, I only have one set of speakers through which I would like to hear everything.

  • @TheProd94

    Does this help with DAWs? Im having trouble with my FL studio clipping. (I know this is off topic) but i’ve tried literally everything! From reducing CPU to messing with the buffer settings. And it only seems to be clipping when i connect it to speakers, which are the KRK Rokits . Someone please help!!!

    My mac is not downloading the software for whatever reason upon installation. It keeps giving me the run around, making me re-download every time; but never opening the actual software

    • @BenoniStudio
      @BenoniStudio  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't know what software you are referring to. For Mac, you don't need the driver, just plug and play.
      If it's any of the other software it could be hundreds of possible problems. Could be an OS that is not supported, could be an anti-virus that is corrupting the installer, etc.. If it's a specific app, it's best to contact the manufacture directly.

    Hi Bro...Thank you very much for your video. That helps. Recently I bought this 2i2 2nd gen. And today i did setup 2i2 with my lap top and tried to record using micro phone on ableton live 10. For some reason 2i2 is recognising my mic after switching on the phantom power. FYI..I have used quater inch jack cause i dont have XLR to connect the device. My lap top is windows 10. Could you please suggest me how to fix this issue. Except mic rest all is working fine with my 2i2
    I just realized that need XLR for mic not 1/4". Thank you.
