    Black flies leave in July, but with a little wind there is no problem. The black fly season mid May thru the end of June.

    Great video of the beautiful place I call home! My hubby works in the castle on Whiteface & I run an Airbnb in Au Sable Forks. I've traveled all around the world and still think this is the most beautiful place on earth. =)

    There bigger in MD but only in June. But I have to say that is quite the infestation. Scary almost. Ours go away around by July thank goodness.

    Whiteface is beautiful at the top. My buddy and a few friends climbed Esther mountain first and then made our way to Whiteface. Theres a base camp spot where they both connect. It's an all day climb but worth every black fly.

    The black flies are around a few weeks a year. Usually in May.. Also called May flies. They come out later in higher elevations. If you have never been bit by them, you can get sick and very swollen from there bites. Nice video !!

    I was moose hunting in northern Ontario a few years ago and the Black Flies and No-See-Ums were vicious! We were told they’d go away when it got cold. Well in was 15°F and snowing and they were still swarming under my hat brim. I think they were wearing tiny parkas. 🤣

  • @crystalrivera6048
    @crystalrivera6048 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    We call them no see ums. They can be wicked.
    after a few days of 90 degree days they usually die off. July is much better usually.

    You can spend years exploring the Adirondack’s. By RV, snowshoes, canoe, cycle, hiking, climbing fire towers, on and on and in every season. And distracting yourself with great dining, sporting events and lodging, history and culture. To prove the point, where.else can you visit Americas most iconic colonial star fort, Ticonderoga, dine at the awesome 19th century Sagamore Resort on Lake George, see the NY Ballet inSaratoga Springs, ski Gore Mountain and still only checked out the little far eastern park neighborhood of it 6 million acres.

    I grew up in Albany NY so the Adirondacks were our escape in summer as a child. I made sure my children knew the beauty and majesty of these beautiful mountains. The black flies have a season you need to avoid!! Lake George although falling to people not protecting its beauty remains drinking water safe and the water is so cold I wouldn’t jump in until late July! Have fun you are making me homesick!! If you can try and visit in early October it is amazingly ablaze with color! Black mountain is an easy but long hike to the top.

      Pamela, I was in Lake GEORGE swimming with 1 year grandson and the temperature of the water was very mild. As far as people not protecting the Lake nothing is further from the truth. There are numerous organizations that are dedicated to preservation and assure the Lake remains pristine.

    Difficult to appreciate all the rules assigned to dogs
    Family members ... excluded- harsh
    Seemingly fools impact the majority of reasonable pet owners
    And my experience witnessed many oddities assigned to humans in parks that far exceed any assumed antics of dogs

  • @heberbelles916
    @heberbelles916 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    The black fly's are the worst from Mothers day to Fathers day. If you want to avoid them next time ,visit the area after July 15. I spent the summer 2 miles from fish creek campground at a children's church Youth camp volunteering in maintenance. we tore down an old cabin and built a new one. The camp allowed me to live in my class A RV and gave me full hook ups and also fed me 3 meals a day. one of the best 4 months i ever had.

  • @krash66
    @krash66 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I grew up in the area, and I will tell you what I tell everyone else. Go in August. The mosquitos and Black Flies are worst in the spring and early summer. Also, 25% Deet insect repellent just won't cut it. There are 3000+ plus lakes in the Adirondacks and almost every one of them has a swamp at one end, so bugs are a big deal. Get some 95%+ Deet to fend off the bugs and you'll thank me later. LOL. And make sure your pets are protected, because ticks are everywhere, and Lime Disease is widespread. Speaking from experience, Lime Disease is very serious for pets, so make sure your pet has very good flea and tick protection., and check them for ticks often The price you pay to visit one of the most beautiful wilderness areas on earth (IMHO). Also, go to Upstate NY in August because all the fresh vegetables are ready and they are second to none.

  • @maur2far

    Mike it isn’t the dog poop that keeps our dogs out of some sites. It is the confined boardwalks or staircases where someone who is afraid of dogs would not want to encounter a dog coming in the opposite direction or walking behind them. The trails are open enough where you can step aside and give each other a wide berth. FYI.

  • @drop830
    @drop830 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Black flies are so bad in up state NY this time of year. We Have has a mild summer so far and the rivers and lakes have a lot of water. You can use bug spray but the reason people wear the head nets is because black fles will actually burrow into your hair on your head to get to your scalp to bite you. Unless you want to put bug repellent on in your hair i would suggest the head net

    Repellants don’t usually work so well on black flies. Long sleeves, long pants. Tuck the pants into your socks, wear a head net. Some people also wear gloves. They also make full coats with all of that integrated. The flies move up the mountains as it gets warmer because they can’t deal with the heat. Eventually they just die off in July. It’s bad this year.

    What a terrific video. My favorite subject matter ....the lush, green northeast. Once you got through the swams of black flies, they seemed to.let up and you could begin enjoying the beautiful Adirondacks.🌲🌳🌿🍃 Were any of the DEET Insect repellents effective against them?
    Do any of the Adirondack campsites that you have visited have cabins for rent? Price range?
    Enjoy seeing Bo having an enjoyable time walking in the woods.
    Love your channel👌

      We didn't check cabins. But the KOA we stayed at iLake Placid/Whiteface Mountain was one of the nicest KOAs we've ever stayed at and that had quite a few cabins. We used it as a base to explore different parts of the High Peaks area.

      For whatever reason the bugs this season seem to have been especially heavy. I had 31 bites over a 2 week period gardening - and I was dressing for it!

    Question: Are service dogs allowed?

    • @RVLifestyle
      @RVLifestyle  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ALL dogs are allowed on hiking trails of the park. Private businesses are cracking down on service dogs. Most we see now prohibit emotional support animals because it is so abused.

      RV Lifestyle it’s a shame that people abuse such privileges.
