    I see a negative comment about smoke being child like, but this hobby is the child coming out. Smell is the greatest memory jogger there is and I love the memory of steam engines, diesel fumes and creosote.Let the smoke begin. I still love my S gauge American Flyer Hudson from 1951 when I received it for Christmas and still have it and it smokes.

    Just like the prototype, we can now have particulate matter in our lungs when playing trains.

    I'll buy one when BLI has a simulated turbo charger explosion. Otherwise, that amount of smoke would be great if the model was an Alco.

      Get smoke fluid and give it a light black dye.

    I was watching the smoke coming out and noticed that when you was changing from one speed step to the next it looked like gear shifting when someone uses a clutch vehicle. Just watch it in your video. I think it is cool looking like that.

    I like that it has the smoke unit, it's just i won't get one because of the sound. Doesn't sound anywhere NEAR to a GE FDL power plant. Heck, it sounds like they reused the sound files that their old Blue LIne GE u-boats came with.

    Only a few of the locomotives I’ve been on working for UP actually have flashing ditch lights. These are the old SP units that have that. Otherwise very prototypical. Cool looking engine I’ve had my eyes on buying one once I have the money for my layout

    James,
    Just FYI for your viewers. PTC would not be correct for this locomotive in this particular number. UP 7545 was renumbered to UP 6932 on March 31, 2009. As of 3/2015 the 6932 still did not have PTC installed. You are correct that a UP AC60CW would have PTC, just not in this earlier number series. This particular BLI model is correct for modelers doing Dec 17, 1998 to March 31, 2009. Hope this adds a little something extra.

    Hey James, as usual great review! I've been away from your channel since the Amtrak Acela review. I did see that you were building a new layout (I guess you finally moved, congrats is this new layout larger, smaller than the previous layout or the same size?), so I'll have to back track to get caught up. It's too bad that none of the manufacturers have come up with the prototypical BLACK smoke to offer, perhaps that's down the road. If you remember, I desire to build a NYC subway layout so when MTH finally releases their new HO scale (I have 8 sets of their various O scale subway models) subway sets, I hope that you'll do a review. If you still have a church on your layout, I still have organ music for it to be piped in!

  • @JamesRegiersModels
    @JamesRegiersModels 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Good review. Smoke is a neat idea, though there definitely seem to be some pitfalls. The volume of smoke the model puts out seems a bit excessive, almost like a turbo charger fire (common with GEs, I suppose). It seems too easily blown around by the air conditioning, so it doesn't really quite respond to direction of travel. Gas volume and expansion is difficult to scale effectively, I suppose.
    Of course, I may just be biased after a bad experience with a failing Lionel smoke unit left the basement putrid and uninhabitable for days when I was 8.

    • @jlwii2000
      @jlwii2000  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +JRegier80 Wow really? That had to be nasty to have your basement filled with O scale burnt smoke. Yuck. Thanks for the insight, I agree the AC will blow the smoke around a bit. Even though it's my utility room It is air conditioned and heated.

    • @epiccsx
      @epiccsx 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow, much have been bad! My BLI AC6000 I guess had a failing smoke unit too (lol) because it would put out a burnt smelling smoke and I had to get warranty repairs

    Cool Like it Man Thanks for sharing! Think you can get scented fluid for the smoke units that will work .Had some a wile back that smelled like pine trees..Added a bit more realism to the layout since it had some forest modeled .Wonder if that smoke unit with the fan it has can be purchased separately for other projects??

    • @epiccsx
      @epiccsx 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Probably not, BLI has a limited supply of parts and they say they must be used as a replacement part for a BLI product, but I think Bachmann sells them separately, you can also custom make one

    This video is five years old now, just wondering how locos with smoke turned out? because in the UK the first manufacturer has announced a production model for next year reasonably priced, but no working model to show, I like the idea but skeptical about it, ..... especially as the manufacturer recently had to re-call some DCC water towers which were blowing up in little kid's faces due to Chinese manufacturing with sub-standard electronics

      @derekonxbox 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      In the US its a big thing over here. BLI (Broadway Limited Imports) MTH and Lionel all offer smoking steam and diesel locomotives, and for the steamers, they have the option for "smoking whistle" and the smoke is synchronized to the chuffing rate. Even Bachmann offer some cheap rudimentary smoke especially on their cheap DC steam locomotives. BLI, MTH and Lionel offer the option to switch off the smoke unit if you wish to run w/o it. Granted i've heard some problems with BLI smoke units but I've heard that's more of a DCC problem related with their Paragon 3 decoders then the actual unit itself.

    James I'm going to hit ya up with a Question that some may or may not have asked why has a Manufacture not added lights down along the Steps or under the Frame of HO engines my Dad asked me that on my N scale which is smaller than HO and would be hard to mount but on HO I would think it would be and easier Feet to do) O and on the Lights it begs me to wonder when we are going to see Manufactures come out with the Blue tint style headlights with Cars like Ford going to these expensive headlights and some Truck Companies and Owner operators wonder when U.P. and others will move over to them..

    Hello James I admire your TH-cam channel and videos of the new models and reviews I have noticed that you point out the flashing ditch light on the Union Pacific locomotives and that I'd share with you fact if you hadn't known but when Union Pacific merged in with Southern Pacific and started painting the SP units into UP scheme SP had flashing ditch light but UP would sometime over see the change and leave them be so just suggest if you have a UP with flashing lights like this AC unit that it's a former SP unit in UP coating

  • @nickgrandy3098

    good review...just a heads up, unless they changed something you don't have to move the loco to get the sound feature going...just use the start up sequence on your throttle...as far as the smoke feature is concerned...i think it's way to much smoke for a diesel...I'm sure it's hard to replicate the real thing but when was the last time you saw such a heavy stream coming from a diesel...bli is still my choice for everything included locos...in fact i have a paragon3 es44ac (i think thats model) ns horse head scheme on order for March of 2016...not real interested in the smoke part but the rolling thunder feature, good God it appears to be amazing...can't wait!!...to bad I'll be staring at the receiver kit I'll be getting next month for so long before using it...anyway...been following your vids for a couple years now...keep up the good work...

    Dude LED'S ARE NOT SERIOUS! Mechanical or electrical issues are serious. Blue LED'S ARE KIND OF PROTOTYPICAL A BIT IF THE RR is using Halogen light bulbs IN THESE MODERN LOCOS that has a sort or blue white tone to them since they burn so hot and then reflect off a SILVER mirror.I know you do not like them ,but for accuracy of your review you mention serious when it really is.

    Nice review - appreciate how you brought out @ 8:50-9:00 the power on and start up. Very cool how the number boards go on with track power, and white/yellow-tinge leds vs bluish-tinge of the previous...but not so cool (or prototypical) the herky-jerky start of how the loco has to be "moving" before you hear engine start/idle. Even the Econami DCC system gives you engine start/idle. I'd much rather lose the smoke feature for better fidelity of prototypical performance IMHO. [In My Humble Opinion]

    The manufacturers continue to emphasize weight and how much a road locomotive can pull but that’s not very important when you’re running trains of 50 cars or less and what’s more, how many modelers run trains with one road locomotive? Put the money into proving handrails that don’t look like they’ve been bent up on an engine that’s been wrecked in a derailment. Lose some weight and use metal stanchions and handrails instead.

    I can see the detail so would prefer less talk. Don't really care about detail. Even HO trains are adult toys and the sound and smoke are fun to play with. Realism became fun with American flyer sounds and airchime horns way before any other scale.

    I thought the sturdiness of the bendy handrails was funny. I guess I'm just used to thick wire handrails.

    To bad the smoke lingers for so long, makes it look like a head gasket is going, if it dissipated about an inch up and was more blackish, (haha) I might be sold on something like that. just reminds of more of a toy, JMO though, don't hate on me

      +Dallin Davis yeah thats why I dont bother with smoke it ends up looking really thin and like a lionel train gimmick

      +Dallin Davis Both you and Luke hit it right on the head! That's my issue with smoke, not being black and toyish looking. Blown head gasket hahaha!

      Some brands of smoke fluid have fluid that dissipates faster than others

      +BN Rail Nut Thanks man, I don't know why he's in a foul mood. He is usually an all right guy. I think he's very into BLI AC6000's and wants everything mentioned but I don't have the time or the attention span. The locos can do quite a bit and just what I did cover ran 20 minutes.
