Ive Been watching many of your videos and find them very informative and thought out. Because of you I am starting to debate on getting back into the hobby that i have loved for so many years since i was a kid.I had a nice collection before I Became a teenager in the late 80's, a hobby i financed myself workin many odd jobs when I was a teen. im trying to catch up on all the changes that have impacted the hobby over the last 30 years, like a crash course of sorts. My only dilema is space constraints and family obligation at this point, so yeah thats where im at. so keep up the good work man and maybe one day i make that jump back in to the hobby once more. theres is nothing like model railroading and i hope this hobby never dies. thanks
Jason Bourne you sound a lot like me - collecting since a teenager myself. I have collected basically my whole life only to put them in tub storage bins with the plan of building that nice layout I have never had. I am running to catch up on today’s technology with the hobby. I have a suggestion for you to kick around. Space being a big player with many of us wanting a layout. I am planning a ceiling layout. There are some good videos on TH-cam showing their particular ceiling layout. It’s a pretty cool idea that looks good if built correctly. It offers a way to run your trains having some fun along the way. I am a HO guy and my collection basically is HO. However, I am putting together a O Gauge setup for the ceiling layout. Easier to see mainly being a larger scale. Just a idea that I got from TH-cam by just running up on a few videos. I have a 20’ X 18’ bonus room where my ceiling layout will be installed. The 80’ of O Realtrax stings the wallet a bit but hopefully it will be worth it. Some use HO for their ceiling layouts so that’s definitely a option that will save a lot of money compared to a O setup.
I just got the Prlx C&O unit with the LED lights and the windows look pretty dark just like it came. You can’t even see through the cab they must have taken your advice lol. I haven’t taken the roof off yet maybe there is black paper in there🤔. Great review!
Great video. I think we all love these locos you displayed today! Personally, I'm very disappointed in Athearn for the fact that they have not made the leap as far as pulling power, lighting, and details. Don't get me wrong they're very detailed, but I think it's been too long that they continue to have issues with handrails, stanctions, couplers, truck issues, ect. If they're charging anything over 175 for what they continue to put out I will not be purchasing Athearn locomotives. Companies, such as Intermountain and scale trains, have set a bar that Athearn needs to meet in order to be relevant in modern locomotive realm. Unfortunately for Athearn I think quite a few people in this Hobby would agree..
I missed out on the bar code NS Sd70ace,but renumbering another unit shouldn't be a problem. Also scrap window tint from a auto detailing shop can help too.
Great review, nicely detailed locomotives, but after making two buys with backlit numberboards, LEDs, stellar sound and 60 car pulling power I have to admit I'm disappointed with this run. I hope when the SD60Es and GEVOs come out they will show improvements.
You hit on one thing I had trouble with....it's WAY too loud out of the box. I had trouble programming it at all, like changing the address to the road number (I had to program it using "programming on the main" with my Digitrax system), but once I reset CV 125 to a value of 130 from the factory setting of 255, it sounded a lot more realistic. These should sound like you're standing somewhere away from the locomotive, not like you have your head in the engine compartment!
wow James you are getting a awesome colletion of SD-70ACE's. what is your facination of these loco's? Is it because you have seen all of the in person. I do like the fact you can just pop the roof and add figures to the inside.
Did you know they also have the NS logo that's on the conductor side. The Norfolk Southern under the horsehead logo is moved up to far on that side. The real unit has this also.
Can't believe they still didn't get rid of the silver half dollar in the roof and put a nice grate with a fan in there like MTH and WALTHERS a real BUMMER!
how did you become able to review locomotives,ive always wanted to do at least some rolling stock reviews but i would like to know how you came to be able to do this
And that's not talking about all the Broadway limited steam ,the five sets of bp-60 / bh-50 ( centapedes for non Pennsy fans) 2 sets of aba and abb sharks , any athearn power would get laughed right off of the 1.85% climb up horse shoe curve
Everything I have has more pulling power than these, I model the Pennsy, 1 Atlas H-24-66 trainmaster can do 4x as much ,,in my mind ,athearn is the modern day Tyco of this century, I have a 3 unit f-3 aba set from MTH could out due 10 of these snowflakes
I always enjoy your reviews, but sometimes, like this one, they remind me of why I have no desire to switch to DCC. Who actually enjoys all that noise pollution?

wmg33 add 128 to the bell selection in cv122. Example; if you select bell 20, set cv 122 to a value of 148.

the only non trash SD70 variant EMD has made so far. The rest are trash. (in real life)
