  • AlmaLinux is an exciting new distribution, that aims to carry on CentOS (as we used to know it). In this video, I show of a migration script that can be used to migrate from CentOS8 to AlmaLinux, in place.

    Man, a lot of companies will love this. Although, I don't know anything about servers and this video made little sense to me, I just love how this looked so painless.

    Superb video as always! Thank you. I'll have to check out AlmaLinux at some point since I am a big fan of CentOS 6/7/8 Linux and have taught all three when I was a college professor.

      I'd be curious to hear your thoughts on it, based on your background, once you've had a chance to check it out.

      @@LearnLinuxTV Will do, Jay. I know that you're a PopOS fan but you appear to have a passion for Red Hat and CentOS, now AlmaLinux as well. BTW, I'm enjoying your latest book. I'm about half-way through it. Great stuff!

    Thanks Jay for another great video. I don’t think this script is something RHEL & IBM will be too enthusiastic about. Jumping ship is painless and with Alma linux offering a support tier via Cloud Linux... I would imagine that people will switch in droves... Saw your nice video about Alma Linux. The artwork looks fabulous! Hopefully it will run on my beloved ancient ThinkPad ☺️

    Has anyone recently done this on a production server that is running a LAMP stack, that includes Litespeed?

    Hey @jay Thanks for this tutorial, I'm a linode user, and I'm wondering if you would be able to use this deployment to then install cpanel using the marketplace script. Or would you need to install CentOS install cpanel, then use the migration script to convert the server to AlmaLinux. Now July21 there is still no current alamlinux for cpanel script. You can however choose Alamalinux as a distro. Or would you be able to create a future video of Almalinux and cpanel install on linode/digitalocean, etc. Thanks.

    How do we take a snapshot manually on our own if we don't have access to it from the host provider?

    One thing I haven't figured out yet is... I have a local mirror of AlmaLinux setup but I can't change the dnf config to use it. I move the stock .repo files out of the way and drop in my own .repo file but dnf says it will ignore it. I do NOT get this behavior on Fedora nor CentOS when I replace the stock .repo with my own mirror one. HELP!

    Hello, in the case of deciding to migrate from centOS7 to AlmaLinux, should we first upgrade to centOS8 or is there a direct step ??? Thanks

    hostnamectl doesn't exist on alma?
    It does...that is easier then editing two files.
    'hostnamectl set-hostname '

      That's a bit hard to answer without knowing more about what you like. You should always gravitate toward what you like and the aspect that makes you the most happy. Look at job ads (not on your company network though). Job ads give you a good idea what's out there.

      Some people have been with CentOS for so long and haven't been paying to use a Linux distro. RHEL may be doing a free level right now, but it doesn't have full support from Red Hat and how long is it going to be free???

    • @ashishpatel350
      @ashishpatel350 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sephiroth7818 it's going to be free for a long time. Redhat wants to consolidate their oses. And just push rhel. The free license is meant to replace centos.

    • @madcockney
      @madcockney 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ashishpatel350 That's not quite true. You need to read their terms and conditions. They only allowed the use of RHEL for up to a specific number of instances per user and that was due to the uproar. A lot of companies use CENTOS as did a lot of hardware suppliers to operate things such as blade servers, SANs, NASes, etc. With the experience with CENTOS and what RH tried to do I think many would rather have nothing to do with it now. On top of that AlmaLinux comes from a company that has been supplying their own version to a lot of hosting sites. Look up CloudLinux; that is a good product.
