A First Look At Alma Linux

  • Alma Linux is a community Linux distribution designed to be binary-compatible with Red Hat Enterprise Linux. In other words, Alma Linux is what CentOS used to be. Although I'm not a server admin or anything, people have request that I look at Alma, so I'm going to run through a quick installation and first look inside a virtual machine.

    Fun fact: "Alma" is the Spanish word for "soul" (I believe the distro was developed mostly in Spain) and it is called such because, as a community-maintained distro, they believe the community (as illustrated by their logo) is the "soul" of Linux.

    The full iso allows you to install a Workstation from the start, including office, internet applications etc.
    If you do so, flatpak will be installed by default, giving you access to flathub (which repo you have to add manually).
    After you did so, and added the epel and rpm-fusion repos, you have a workstation which has support up till 2032.
    It is what I actually recommend to my clients whom's home pc I manage (I do use extension to give it more of a desktop feel),
    unless the need specific software which isn't available in the mentioned sources.

    Having been an admin and developer in the Enterprise for Linux using (RHEL, AIX (IBM UNIX), HPUX, and Solaris) throughout and developing on Linux using RHEL and Ubuntu (initially), I can tell you if you wanted to study for your Red Hat certifications it was recommended to install CentOS because as it was told to me, "CentOS is bug for bug the same as RHEL". Looks like AlmaLinux may be a good replacement in that space. BTW: I too have issue with anaconda, you'd think a company with the resources of RH would do a bit better with their installer, though it is miles ahead of the earlier text based installers for RH. 🙂 Great Video as always!

    The complete distro would install a graphical environment. But by far the most used version of CentOS and now Alma or Rocky is of course the minimal install since that is more adequate for say VM's with their lower footprint. Also it is much better to have installed only the needed software then the entire stack and for the most part servers do not need the graphical interface they're used to run web apps and other software, you do not need or want to have lot's of software on a server ...the minimal the better.
    Also for the most part that's the main reason that the wiki is small ... it is not about installing everything on the planet just the basic Server-Side apps ... Webserver, databases, php, Java and the like ... all Server side tools. Also of importance about the information of those OS's ... if anyone has some doubts about Alma or Rocky Linux and needs support you can find that information on the previous Centos Forums ... remember that RedHat Entreprise, CentOS, Alma Linux and Rocky Linux should have exactly the same behavior and so those older Forums are very much up to date for Any of those distros.

Now it will boot to a proper desktop and all that’s necessary is to install third party repositories and set up Flatpak. Here you have an LTS version of Fedora and you’re good to go! While its still a server distro, anyone who can find their way around Fedora will feel right at home on Alma Linux.

      @Fashinqu A. I actually did this a few months ago and the process of getting the keys to authenticate is a huge pain. I burned through 3 of my keys before I even got one of the servers to actually post. So yes they do give you some for free and 16 is more than enough for me but it's the principal that they are gate keeping the OS from non payers.

      DT only looks at DEs, (and I guess installers and other stuff nessesary to get to that step). What do you realistically expect him to review? From his perspective the difference between these distributions is the wallpaper. They both use default gnome, with dnf and yum, and the anaconda installer.

    As far as I know, Centos is not dead, rather than being a copy of RedHat Enterprise Linux, it is now a community project on which Red Hat Enterprise Linux is based on. I think Centos stream 8 is based on Fedora 28, Centos stream 9 on Fedora 34... Fedora current version being 36. I was expecting a very stable version with Centos stream 9, but sound is not working (I think because pipewire not working... aplay -D sysdefault piano2.wav works), and packages in rpm fusion seems not presents.

      CentOS and Scientific Linux were open source rebuilds of RHEL. Not everything RH is open source, so you didn’t exactly get everything, but they were great for use by hospitals, universities, etc. Sadly, Cent folded, and that’s why Rocky and Alma sprang up. They’re for serious enterprise stuff, without having to pay for RH support. Fedora is it’s own community, with support from RH. It’s its own enthusiast distro, but is the beta playground for RHEL. You could run it on a server, but I wouldn’t. Ubuntu started as an enthusiast distro mostly for desktops, then grew into the server space, especially in Africa and Europe. And that’s not half as complicated as the history of Unix (I supported SunOS/Solaris and HP-UX). Damn....
      So think Rawhide -> Fedora -> RHEL -> Cent/Alma/Rocky.
