    Some tips to make the process easier:
    1: In the video he makes many extra steps that makes it seem way harder than it is, what you would might want to do instead is clicking on the "click to copy" link in the AUR, type "git clone" and the the URL you've copied, cd into that directory and then makepkg -si (The "i" flag already installs it).
    2: There are many alternatives to Yay, that are built in different languages. I would recommend Paru (Built on Rust) or Pikaur (Built in Python), as they have the same syntax and flags as pacman.

    Yes, just a few lessons here and it is crystal clear to me I will use Ubuntu-s-Server and Archlinux for my machines, I am sold! So defintely going to try your linode sponsor. Actually that is were all android superusers end up and why I ended up here... to contribute.

    I really enjoyed this one. AUR has been confusing to me forever. One of the main reasons I avoided Archlinux. I recently installed Manjaro and this video is helpful for that as well. I have about a 50% failure rate trying to install Archlinux.

    Could you make a video about maintaining AUR packages?

  • @calebdillmuth1926
    @calebdillmuth1926 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I would not recommend using yay anymore. It's not being maintained, and the main developer went away and made another AUR helper called paru. It uses the same syntax as yay and it's being maintained.

      Actually, I can confirm that yay is now being maintained by EndeavourOS's team and is now available alongside paru in the EndeavourOS repo.

    Can you please supplement this with a quick video on setting up GPG? Getting errors through yay when trying to import keys for brave, Dropbox and others.

    • @wojteksowinski248
      @wojteksowinski248 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know this is a pretty old comment but if you're still having problems with GPG, I suggest using paru instead of yay. Since I switched, I have yet to come across any problems with importing keys. Also, paru has some nice extra features like the option to review a package in vifm. I've also heard some good things about aura but I haven't used it.

      @@wojteksowinski248 actually your timing is perfect. Is the install process similar? Will browse the wiki when my new machine arrives. Is it just a fork of yay or something new?

      @@citywitt3202 The install process is basically the same. It started off as a rewrite of yay in rust when one of the maintainers of yay left the project.

      Oh my god, that's my 3rd aur helper that stopped active development... Luckily paru is very similar to yay after enabling the reverse list and when adding the alias yay='paru' i still can use the name i'm used to ;)

      @peterjansen4826 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ikrakoy1902 Great! For me the last year Arch has been incredibly stable, to the point of being boring. Nothing breaks anymore. :p The main rules: update regularly, read the output when you use pacman (or when you use pamac but I recommend to update with pacman) and go easy with the AUR (for example the mesa-drivers break twice a year because of a dependency problem due to some software updating earlier than other).
      I also recommend to use the linux-tkg kernel (from the guy who makes Glorious Eggroll Proton). There is a simple config-file for it which lets you get better performance, partially thanks to patches and partially because you can configure it for latency or throughput. Most of the config-file is easy to understand, there is no risk involved.

      @@peterjansen4826 How often do you (or did you) update?

    • @peterjansen4826
      @peterjansen4826 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@michaelhenry3234 It depends, you don't have to update often, if you do it once in 2-3 weeks you will be fine. More important is which commands you use, where many Arch-users make a mess of how they use pacman: they neglect to sync and update the repositories-databases. When you install a program: -Syy, when you update -Syyu. As long as you do that the chance of the repository-database breaking and getting locked is incredibly small, it still can happen but you need much more bad luck for it to happen.

    Thank you again for a very informative video. I was of the understanding that yay was deprecated and being replaced by paru. You covered yay but didn't mention paru. Was this intentional? Both do essentially the same thing. However, when something is deprecated I try to move to its replacement as soon as possible. Take care.

    Hey Jay, love your videos. They're so useful.
    This one though was a little tough to follow. There was little context setting, I don't know what a package is, what pacman is, what you mean by dependencies etc. I also was a bit lost when you ran makepkg; what did it do? I just accepted it needed to be done but didn't know why.
    Again, your videos are incredible. I just felt obliged to share where I struggled here. Thanks Jay and merry christmas
