6 day winter canoe, wild camping & bushcraft trip with Polish Lavvu hot tent, Loch Awe, Scotland.

  • We head up to Loch Awe for a week long winter canoe trip. The weather was changeable; wind, rain, snow and -8 on our last night. We had no gas so cooking and coffee was done over fire and our camp consisted of a modified Polish Lavvu poncho tent from 1989.
The Lavvu was modified by ourselves - we added about 14" of waterproof canvas to the bottom of the tent, stitched a zip into the front door, added a flashing kit for the frontier stove and used the 'A' frame from a 6m bell tent door to hold the tent up. We also added guy lines and coated the tent with a litre of Fabsil to waterproof it.
It was a great few days; really hard work at times but a very rewarding trip nevertheless. Scotland is a truly beautiful country and any time spent there is always magic in my experience.
We will be uploading some more videos of this type of camping over the coming weeks/months as we sit out the time until we head off in our 4x4 again. Thanks for watching!

That was an absolute delight - such a fantastic way to spend a week. You are lucky people that you both enjoy that life style!
I once spent 4 weeks at the western end of Loch Awe on a piece of land a family friend owned. There was a caravan and a boat - my 3 kids and I had a fantastic time - the wife was not impressed. So it was Spanish holidays after that hahaha.
Now that I live in southern Catalunya I live the outdoors life all the time.
I wish you well, keep up the good work and keep living life to the full.
    Thanks

Cheers Paul, aye the Highlands can be a bit hit and miss. I think Catalunya is your best bet by far! We lived north of Inverness for a while; there's only so many grey skies a man can take before he moves back south 😂. ATB, Ben.

Another great video, and to be able to find some wilderness, peace and quite in the UK is a bonus - brilliant thinking out of the box. Amazing scenery up in Scotland and walking around the burial ground and the castle must have been moving.
40 minutes for the morning coffee on the stove though? More patience than me - the Ghille would be first thing on. Thanks for taking the time filming and putting this up. Look forward to the next one.

A wee word of advice brother Loch Awe is a killer its foolish to venture on the loch in winter in a canoe ,sunny splitting skies then the lochs a rolling mess and will challenge the experienced and tip a sturdy boat easily the fog is also worth noting same again all clear one minute then comes down quick .
Its latest victim was a friend of ours

I'd heard a few stories about the loch before hand but studied the pressure charts before we we went and I could keep an eye on them as I had 4G on the loch. I've seen what the weather fronts can do on these lochs though and it's frightening, I've experienced it on loch Shiel many years ago.
