Solo Wild Camping - Amok Hammock - Freezing Conditions Galloway Forest - Bushcraft

  • I was itching to get out and try the Amok hammock I'd recently bought, so when a gap in the wet weather looked likely I headed up to Galloway Forest Park for a couple of nights of solo wild camping. I make a campfire, cook up some decent food and and take a look at an IPA from The Wild Beer Co.

    Thanks for taking us on a wonderful relaxing trip !
    About getting in / out. Actually it is very easy. I see others have mention the solution below, but just to pinpoint and confirm:
    Mount the hammock much lower!
    So low that you can slide the foot-end between your legs, sit down, all set :) Besides, if you mount it low, you can sit in the chair-position and reach your cooking gear on the ground besides you to make your hot drinks / meals :D
    Enjoy :)!

      Cheers! I'm getting used to the Amok now, haven't quite mastered the art of entry/exit completely though 🤣. I'll try mounting it lower next time, it would be useful to reach down and make coffee in the morning without having to get out of the Amok 👍.

    My Amok arrives tomorrow so I’m looking at all kinds of videos of it tonight. Really enjoyed you attitude & sense of humour (“I’ll be lying on the forest floor frozen to death ”). I did like your jump in method, as long as I don’t get seasick from the swinging. I’m a lot shorter, so I’ll be hanging it significantly lower. Keep on hanging ... cheers 😀

    Its different strokes for different folks but I rarely leave the bag behind and return for it. I find it less tiring to walk a mile with the bag, than walk a mile to find the site, a second mile to go back for the bag, then a third mile carrying the bag back to the site!
    1 mile with the bag is less work than 2 miles without it and a mile with it!

    Getting in and out is easy once you've done it a few times. There are many techniques. I back in from the right side by grabbing the structural strap along the right side with my right hand, plus the ridgeline with my left hand... shove your weight past COG on the head side as you get in. I bought some 1/2" pex pipe at Home Depot for holding up the head and foot boxes. Carry them in my pack with hammock. Super light...flexibility is perfect for this application.

    • @Adventure-Outdoors
      @Adventure-Outdoors  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I eventually managed to find a way to get in without too much drama, it sounds like the same way that you do it! The pex pipe is a good idea, I'll pick some up I reckon. I think Amok were going to produce something for the head and foot boxes but as yet I don't think they have 👍

    Love the location Galloway is just great if you don't fancy the trek up to Highlands...you mentioned the Wayfarer meals..they are expensive..I use a product called Look what we've found..used to made in the lakes..but now made in Consett..average price around..£1:50 to £2.. great food and it's not full of crap..sold by Waitrose..ocado.. Morrisons if they have them in or I think you can get them direct on line from Consett..well worth a go..
    Love the Amok..there just awesome..might treat myself someday..

      Ah yeah I've been trying to get hold of those meals, I checked out my local Morrisons before my last trip but couldn't find them. The Wayfarer stuff is definitely over priced at £4.50 a pop, way cheaper to just bring along a tin of corned beef and some uncle Ben's rice 🤣👍

    Beautiful spot. Been thinking about one of those hammocks myself. there are a few places local to me that have plenty of trees, but flat ground is a bit hard to find so... a hammock may be the answer, and with my back, it would have to be a lay flat style hammock. Thanks for a great video.

    Hey mate,
    I really enjoyed that but probably shouldn't have watched another hammock when I'm just about to head out for my first hammock camp in my DD Hammock lol.
    It's really nice to see parts of D&G being visited because I'm starting to explore the area more myself too, mainly because I'm closer to there than the Munros. I'm also a fan of bushcraft, learning new techniques and just spending the time in nature, which I get the feeling you do too.
    On that note, where was the spot you were at in this video? So I can add it to my list of to visit places.
    Keep up the great work and I look forward to seeing more D&G.
    All the best,
    Bryan

    • @Adventure-Outdoors
      @Adventure-Outdoors  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Bryan, this was along the 'Raiders Road', it's a dirt track that is usually open between May and October. If you visit in the winter the road is shut to vehicles but you can leave your car overnight in the free carpark at Mossdale and walk up. I camped next to Stroan Loch here, there are a few good places to camp on the loch shore.
      The road carries on for 6 miles towards Clatteringshaws loch, there's an area called the otter pools along the way which is a good place to camp by the river (although its always busy in summer).
      D&G is a great area, it might not have the mountains of the north but it has it's own charm. I'll be back up there as soon as the restrictions are lifted. Good luck on your first hammock camp, hope it goes well! 👍

    Love my Amok, i'm tall so i have the XL version :-) The best way to get in the amok is at a 45 degrees angel from the side. And dont mount it to high from the ground, that will make you do a flip if you are not paying attention :-P Another great one.

    Re the Amok, I bought one last year, best sleep I have ever had. Plenty warm, no cold spots with a good mat, and incredibly comfortable. Well worth the weight and acrobatics training to get in and out.

    • @Adventure-Outdoors
      @Adventure-Outdoors  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cheers! Regarding the trees; you would normally expect Scots pine to dominate but the ancient Scots pine has largely been cleared from Scotland, this area is a huge managed plantation and my guess is the trees are a mixture of Corsican pine and Douglas fir.

    Allo, I’d like to ask, how is the Amok, in side winds an rain?
    Dose the tarp come in enough when crossed to keep out the damp stuff?
    I’m with a group of lose canoe buddy’s an some of us have injuries so tents an sleeping on the floor is fast coming to a end.
    Great idea, an it’s from da Vikings, so they know a bit adopt Fowler weather, but, just thinking about the realities.
    Any help would be great about the wet stuff, all or most of the vids are about snow, wind etc, very little about our lovely rain!

    • @Adventure-Outdoors
      @Adventure-Outdoors  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Paul, I sold the Amok in the end, I just couldn’t get on with it. It was really comfortable when lying on your side but it is an absolute nightmare to get in and out in my experience. A traditional hammock like the DD hammock is a much better bet in my humble opinion; I still use my DD on a monthly basis.
      In terms of rain, I think the Amok would cope well. I used mine in heavy rain and gale force winds in the Scottish Highlands a few years back and didn’t get wet at all, you just have to lower the sides of the tarp. Hope that helps 👍

    • @Adventure-Outdoors
      @Adventure-Outdoors  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cheers! I haven't noticed that with mine, but it definitely does bend a bit in the middle. How does your air bed fit? The air bed I use seems to be a really tight fit so it keeps the hammock fairly rigid, I can imagine if there was any slack then it would gather in the middle. Hope you get it sorted 👍
