  • A windy wild camp in the woods with the Polish army lavvu poncho shelter. Hot tenting and testing out an army ammo box stove, made and gifted to me by John, Northeastbushcraft. DIY chimney and stove jack, first use and how I made them.
    Link to John Northeastbushcraft's video, building the ammo box stove: • army ammo box stove
    The frontier stove can be purchased for around £150 inc stove pipes and not £400 as previously thought.

    You might want to attach some "L" brackets to the sides of the stove so you could stake it into the ground. I think that would help with the stability. Also you could put a ring around the chimney pipe and attach some guy cables and peg them into the ground externally. A bit of bother for an overnight but if you were going to be there a few days it would be worth the peace of mind to have the stove secure. ATB Doug.

      I will try to do more this year. I'm getting faster with video editing and only took me 4 days to edit this one. Its the time spent in front of the PC that puts me off doing more regular videos which is more of a hobby than a job. Happy new year to you too, atb. Damian.

      I can see why you would be put off. I never realized how much time it takes to edit.
      The funniest video I've ever watched on TH-cam was the one in which you and Davey camped near the airport looking for aliens with your tin foil hats. The spoon and "dish" were hilarious. Humor is always appreciated, but your camping is the real draw, and your videos are always enjoyable.
      Hope you and your family have a fabulous 2018!

    Don't have the center pole so Long making the tent high. shorter pole makes the tent squat and doesn't catch the wind so much and gives you more legroom. Cool vid though Happy New Year

    Great location, wrong day of the year with the wind as it was. In the words of Del Trotter. "its blowing a bloody Typhoyd out there".Thats what i call an 'all you can eat fire wood', with the fallen oak tree. very handy that, i love them kinda spots.
    One thing i do find curious, you must be the 57th wild camper ive seen on youtube that forgot his tent pegs, but remembered his axe, saw and knife. so he makes his own. Call me cynical if you like?
    Good vid though, if i didn't enjoy, i wouldn't watch. every man and his dog on youtube seems to own a Polish lavu tent now.
    i do quite fancy one, but i'm sure you lot are inadvertently pushing the price up.
    I'm with you on the whole Christmas thing, only good thing is the time off work.
    look fwd to the next vid.
    Gary.

      @Fell_Wanderer  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Gary, the price of the shelter has shot up £10 in less than 2 years from military mart where I purchased it. I know thats still not expensive but shows you are right about their popularity pushing prices up. The next time I go camping I may forget my cutlery, that will give me the excuse to carve a spoon. Happy new year, atb. Damian.

      Hello Damian
      Thanks for your reply, i actually done a bit of filming for youtube today, me and a friend of mine are in the process of making our own channel. i done the classic school boy error of not filming enough of the right stuff, so had to film a bit of a sofa summary when i got home.
      i'm discovering its hard to film yourself and try and sound interesting at the same time. ive looked back at what ive filmed. some bits i think, wasnt i good. other bits im wondering what i was on about at the time, its all a bit strange and new to me.
      i do actually mention you in the summary, and the vid involves fallen trees. so theres a nice coincidence.
      i will let you know as soon as it hits the airwaves as we used to say before this youtube thing happened.
      at this point i expect your intrigued to see it.
      ok, iv'e waffled enough, and we all know how annoying that can be.
      Thanks again for your message.
      Gary.

    Check out canvas tents UK mate I bought their Bushcraft stove and rate it higher than the frontier stove there's a cheaper version of it with reviews all over TH-cam but the difference in engineering is like chalk and cheese.The last piece of the flue that contains the spark arrestor also has three tie of points to anchor it with guy lines,all the best and bollocks man :-D :-D :-D love it

    i got a Dutch army double poncho tent it is lower and no arm holes it is a 2 person tent and i can do that but it gotta be a person i would have to like a lot.
    but the length is perfect.
    Could you use a shorter center pole in your tent?
    then you would have more room in the length and a bit less hight.
    also i would make extendable legs to the side so it wil become more stable.
    costs: nothing :))
    Greetings and see you on the next one,, Kitty.

    • @Fell_Wanderer
      @Fell_Wanderer  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Polish poncho tent in my opinion is a one person shelter with room for gear, it makes an excellent hot tent with room to hold a small stove and fuel. It will house 2 people who dont mind being close together but their back packs would need to be used as pillows or left outside

    • @Fell_Wanderer
      @Fell_Wanderer  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lowering the shelter by shortening the central pole will give marginal extra width but one looses height, so no extra area is created by doing so

    Another cracking video Damian. Passing on some guidance I was given - I was warned about Carbon monoxide build up in the tent/tipi if the stove is not sealed and properly out before sleeping (if you planned on using it through the night). Looks like you had more than enough ventilation in the Lavvu :-), but a CO monitor is a good warning system. Bit of a fact - CO poisoning kills more people in the UK in a year than dead fall. Keep up the good work, and looking forward to the next 👍

    I have 3 Lavvus in the hopes as the boys get older they will want to camp with dad.
    The wind looks like Oklahoma in winter. Or spring, or summer, or fall...hmmm seems to be a pattern there.
    Have you cooked with Dakota holes in the wind? I like them since its almost always windy. They aren't any use inside a shelter though. I dont have any answer for inside the lavvu unless maybe a lamp or lantern. Fire it up long enough to warm things and then shut it off.
    All the best.

      I might try a Dakota fire pit on the next woodland camp if its windy. I've seen people use them on TH-cam but have never tried one. I have a Colemans petrol lantern which gives off good heat and would be a good alternative to a stove if it wasn't too cold. Thanks for your comment, atb.

    Arreet Geordie, I can't be too far away from you here in Whitley bay. Ingenious stove jack, especially if you're having to vent off fumes from galvanising. If you need a closer fit, I'm getting away with a length of fire blanket wrapped around the stove pipe. Looks like it was blowing a hoolie mate. Another top tip is to stake out the flue for more stability. All the best for 2018

    Just from my experience I know , and you probably figured out by now that the spark arrester that you made , seriously reduces the air flow through your stove pipe .
    With mesh that fine you are probably going to need a cylinder of that mesh close to 2 feet long to keep the flow good at the top of the pipe . ... just sayin .
    I do like the fine mesh though . Makes things that much safer . Cheers

      You are right, the mesh was too fine and clogged up with tree resin. Its a learning curve, trial and error, thanks for the comment, ATB

    My thoughts are it's your channel and if the troll's don't like what you do then they shouldn't watch. I enjoy your videos and the banter. Thanks for sharing.

    Hiya Damian I enjoyed that vid, I've got a Hungarian lavvu and av found the best way for loads more space was ditching the alu pole and lashing and hoisting it above to a firm branch, if no trees a crafted tripod even works better. I must say I'm impressed with John's stove lyke. Was windy up there mind ah was surprised at how well the lavvu held up. Atb and hope 2018 is a good one for ya. Davie

    Could you use some parra cord to try close the gap on the back end of the Lavvu ?

    • @Fell_Wanderer
      @Fell_Wanderer  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I could have closed the back of the Lavvu but was getting good airflow and not too cold. I didn't have a carbon monoxide alarm so was wary of fumes. Was the first time trying out the stove so learned a lot, thanks
