The FIFA football game will no longer be made by EA Sports. The two organisations have gone their separate ways, EA Sports will continue to make a football game, and FIFA will keep their name.
But how did this come about? Why split? What happens now? And what is the fallout?

Let's see EA put their money where their mouth is. They say FIFA held them back, so I want to see some innovation, some updates. Make all game modes, primarily career mode, feel refreshed and superior. As for FIFA, at the moment I think they will struggle without EA. The studio they side with has big shoes to fill. And some may laugh because those used to be EA's shoes, but EA has some of the biggest tools available. I'm most interested to see two contending football/soccer games going head-to-head now, because the competition will force both to make big improvements to their respective games.

FIFA has got to be one of the laziest low-effort games out there. Every year, they recycle the player faces, the pitches, the commentary... the list goes on. They tweak the effectiveness of crosses a little bit, add a handful of new players & charge full price - & that's just the offline modes. I don't even dare to look at what they do with their gambling (um, I mean surprise mechanics) mode.

The only redeeming quality for FIFA over the last 10 years has been its association with the football game. Otherwise, it's just corruption, poor implementation of financial fair play, and money grabbing by diluting competions with too many teams.
They say that the name of FIFA is enough to sell video games, but I don't think they realise that their association with the football game actually helps their brand, rather than the brand helping the football game sales.
I think in the next 5 years, we'll see FIFA get a lot more abuse regarding their other activities without the association with the popular football game to protect them.

To add another dimension, "non-simulation" doesn't necessarily mean non-"be the footballer" or non-"be the manager" games. In gaming "simulation" often means "attempting to be realistic, a simulation of what it would *actually* be like", so FIFA may mean that they are working on less "realistic" games, and shifting towards more "arcady" games. Either way I agree with the conclusion, as much as I dislike EA and the FIFA series of games, it is the best "be the footballer" series we have, and unless FIFA partner with an unrealistically experienced and talented developer, this was a mistake fueled by selfishness

I've been playing FIFA since FIFA 1995 and all this FUT nonsense really turned me off. It's been possible to avoid it to a degree, but it does feel more and more like a scam every year I play it, to the point where I typically bought a FIFA every three years, rather than each iteration (as I used to from 95-03). The idea of a true challenger to EA's game would be exciting; ProEvo went from a genuine competitor to an also-ran. Crazy to think that in the 90s and 00s it was normal to see 5-10 competing football games released each year. I don't expect a return to that, but would love to see a new FIFA that brings some new ideas to the table, and a dev team that, at least for the first few years, really gives a damn about improving it year-on-year.

If FIFA are smart they’ll partner up with either Konami - to make PÉS great again - or 2K. Either one would be really good especially if 2k can create a similar career mode to the one in NBA 2k games. And that’s just one aspect of development, yes an extremely important one, especially for a sports game, but imagine trying to find a studio that has the development infrastructure to take on a entirely new franchise let alone find the right talent for all areas of game development.

I've been with Champ Man since I think "Championship Manager '93/'94 Season Data Up-Date Disk" (or "v1.3" which I seem to remember was what my cracked copy was called) on the Amiga 1200, though I'm sure I remember playing in the 92/93 season, so maybe my mate had the original (which wouldn't surprise me) and I didn't get a copy off him until he had the "End of 1994 Season Data Up-Date Disk". We'd play loads round his or mine and I'd do entire seasons (sometimes two) through the night rather than homework and sleep, though I think that annoyed my big sister with all the clicking in the dark then the grinding of the A1200 as the data was processed for the following season and I got to find out which star players had left for Italy. That was the only version I ever had any success at, with multiple league titles for Norwich.
Champ Man 2 was played round another mate's with a good half a dozen of us, though that slowed things down but we got to know each others tactics & teams and play their matches for them if they were busy - certainly preferable to putting them on holiday and watching the AI coach go bananas with the team selection & formation. By then though most saves I'd soon be sacked and would spend my turn applying for all the available jobs, which felt somewhat of a mirroring of my post-college drop-out brief spell on the Dole.
Roll on CM3 and by CM01/02 I had my own flat & PC and this remains my favourite version (and I'm not alone there). My disc is still on the shelf and I did return to it a few years back, but sadly it'd still bug out once you'd got yourself invested in a save. That was the pinnacle of a fine balance between available depth of detail and enjoyable gameplay, without getting bogged down or overwhelmed.
I don't think I ever made it to CM4 (03/04 being the last SI CM). Years later I've moved in with my partner and she's got into CM via my 01/02 disc. She then gets me CM 2006 (CM5 being the first in-house Eidos) and I had to politely explain the importance of the SI/Eidos split and then wean her off it with FM 2007. I never touched it. She claimed to prefer the CM version so I tried her again a few years later with FM 2010. I had a good few years away from it all but she dragged me back in with FM 2017. I struggled and that's when I returned to CM01/02.
I'm sat here at half four in the morning staring at four large paragraphs detailing my CM/FM history and wondering why I bothered to type it all out in a reply to you specifically. I guess I felt you'd relate to the obsessive nature the game fosters...

EA has so many gameplay options as well Career, pro clubs, Online, Co-op seasons and what not more. FIFA has to offer the same + better to pull away customers. It would at least take 5/6 years before they have a product that comes close to what EA already has.

Go for a season pass style system with the FUT so that every year a reset or wipe would happen for leagues, positions, cards, etc. (although previous season cards could be stored in a binder or collection tab or something to look back at). There is a counter argument which you’ve omitted. If FIFA were/are smart, they’d have opened talks prior to their decision to part with EA. Don’t underestimate the motivating pull of buckets of money for a top developer to get involved. A lot depends on the IP of the teams and the players and who will definitely get those. If EA has secured the IP not just for the leagues but the teams and players, then FIFA are stuffed.
EA’s FIFA is not the best. For example, full manual control is not possible. Matching algorithms won’t allow games between full manual players. Thus there’s very little skill when the computer is augmenting the player. I’d be happier to see a game with full manual control, no rip off in game purchases and no annual updates where the only change is the year. If FIFA has partnered with Socios and say 2k, then EA will have a fight on their hands.

Yes no twitter/Facebook, but we did still have the Internet in those days so to imply most people didn't know it wasn't the same game is a bit misleading I think. I would imagine the sales figures would back this up too

Agreed. The script itself is fine but the narrator is obnoxious. I didn't think it was possible for someone narrating a video to overacf but somehow he manages it.

This makes (inadvertently) EA sound like the good guys. Far from it, thier football games have been stagnant for many years with all game modes except the gambling simulator taking a back seat. There is no innovation, the gameplay had barely changed in years and the AI has zero variation and is blatantly scripted to further prop up the gambling mode.

Btw, even back in 2003, gamers were well aware of the split… at least I was and I, as a young kid, went with the brand that owned the data and intelligence. It was really a simple decision, even back then for a ten year old so good luck to FIFA.

If FIFA (the organization) totally bomb with their new game, they'll have to find more creative ways to be corrupt to cover their losses.

EA is really good at attaching excitement to players. It’s magical getting to control the players that you watch and the global stars. Every other aspect of there fifa series needs massive work.

The simple answer is that EA is cheap. From robbing consumers every year and profiting of ultimate team with lack luster gameplay, Fifa saw their income they generated every year and increase their offer for the original deal. Either way both Madden and Fifa will bank on variables such as the death of John Madden and the last Fifa game to push another sets of unfixed broken games.

Hopefully you'll still play it if it proves to be better than whatever FIFA comes up with. We should be giving our hard earned money to the game that focuses on the enjoyment of the players the most, not the one with the best name.

There are 3 big players in the football gaming market EA and whatever their game is called, Konami and football manager.
Loads of other games have been released and failed along the way, those 3 regardless of title will always set the standard in their particular markets. FIFA’s new game will either be a 2K half baked flop that takes years to get to the standard or some other developer that’ll flop and fold.

It's a kinda difficult marked of trying to revolutionise as the main players are just casual gamers and want the same, but with improved quality.
Finding someone that can beat EAs "new" franchise must have an insane good new idea that somehow can get all casual players over without changing too much, but still making something new. As making the same game only better will never work as it will take multiple years of trial and error and you might have lost the main player base before that.

The model of restructuring, upgrading engines, money grabs the on an annual basis was always going to fail down the line. Unless you are trying to play competitive or buying your first ever fifa, most don’t buy every fifa every year anyway. They are better off releasing a title they can update over time.

I never thought I would be siding with FIFA in any situation. Electronic Arts has been taking advantage of its position for well over a decade. Every iteration of the game has very few updates to gameplay and AI, with most changes being in updated visuals, and stats on players while charging the customer full price every year. The only meaningful fix updates happened to Ultimate Football which happens to be the part of the game that makes the most money.
