I really like how you have both devices when doing game review for the systems even tho some people might hate of the ally or the steam deck i just wanted to say that i enjoyed the comparison
VRR is literally purpose built for making sporadic frame rates feel smooth by making the screen match the fps of the game. On the ally as long as you’re getting 48 fps then it can take advantage of VRR
Regardless of the ROG ally better hardware I am so pleased to see that new games get much more linux support due to the Steam deck. Ironic that the only caveat of the rog ally [to me anyways] is it's OS.
I took a break from baldurs gate 3 for this game as from software is my favorite studio. Great game. But it has a bug where it doesn’t seem to save sometimes and if you quit and come back you your progress since you last booted the game isn’t saved. Which is frustrating. I’ve been playing on the ally and it looks great. I installed it on steam deck but haven’t tried it yet there.
the simple solution to the two steam devices, is to have a second steam account and share your primary account's game with it, you can't play the same games at the same time, but you get to install locally on the second device, and take it on the go with you.
I think the steam deck is great for just out the box application with maybe just a few setting changes etc using cryo. The ally requires a bit more tinkering to optimise performance but definitely more worthwhile once dialled in. Ps set up a manual fan curve on the ally through armoury crate, I can only assume you’re using turbo which has a ridiculous fan curve allowing the temps to get as hot as they are in the test
@@gamersdigester You are young. This game is fine without backbutton because of lock system but in more competitive and fast paced battle between players, the ability to keep your thumb on the right stick all the time will really benefit you👍 some light mech are really fast and you will want to have that extra weapon tracking ability when not using hard lock.
There was an article somewhere talking about Starfield working best with proper drivers on handhelds. This makes sense. I didn't know they hadn't done that yet.
Funny enough I was but then I had to wipe my deck and I haven't re installed them. This was a fantastic reminder and I will update you if it improves the fps by a significant ammount
I also own both the Deck and the Ally and get way better results on the Ally than you do. Can you please specify your Ally settings (Is it debloated, have you optimised windows, share you VRAM settings, RIS or not) and try another test with a custom tdp 25-30 watts with a custom fan curve? Turbo settings is definitely NOT the thing to do on the Ally. Because on my Ally, at 720p, in the very same zone than your test run( but boss fight included) i get 60fps which can drop to 45 minimum sure, but playing at MEDIUM/HIGH with RIS, which makes it look like it's running at 900p, enabled. For convenience, i lock it at 45 fps with Armory Crates andWith freesync, it gives me a stable and silky smooth experience wich rarely drops below 45 even in some more demanding levels. With the Deck, on LOW, i only get 60 fps in empty closed areas, the general performances are between 45 and 30 fps with an average at 37fps and it drops in the low 20's in some of the later stages. And there is no freesync with the Deck so it's better to lock it either at 40hz and 40fps(and get drops to low 20-30fps in the worst scenario) or at 30 fps and get a more "stable" experience, meaning with less fps fluctuations(still drop to the low 20 in specific levels). So if it's about pushing the visuals the Ally does way more (it looks way better and run much smoother), it's not even close. The Deck wins if it's about battery life at 15 watts because it remains an enjoyable experience. I agree with you on one point though, it running that well on the Deck at 15 watts is already quite the miracle only Valve and Nintendo offer nowadays.
Just an observation; no hate; But look at that paragraph and all the extra stuff you explained to do just to get it running at optimal performance on Ally. On steamdeck, you fiddle with the quick settings for like 30 seconds and you're good to go. Also I've never seen the game hit 20fps ever, and i play on high. But everyone has different experiences so for you maybe your ally just works better than your steamdeck. And for him, it's vice versa. That's life. Like i said, no hate, just an observation.
@@h.serafin1489No problem with you disagreeing with my statement, however, there are many things that need to be adressed(sorry for tldr): 1 - Your input does not change the main point : he is comparing the worst(even counterproductive) way to play with his Ally to the best conditions to play it on the Deck. 2 - You're wrong on saying that what i'm suggesting to do is more tedious than what is required on the Deck. Just think about it, all that needs to be done for the Ally is through in Armory Crate via an easy accessible process(custom tdp at 25 or 30 watts>fan curve option 3>VRAM modification to your desire>45fps VRR>activating RIS). Done. On the other end, the Deck's optimisation process requires WAY MORE, and you seem to forget it or brushing it off, like installing and setting Cryobytes up(which includes the additional step of rooting your Deck via SteamOS), modifying your VRAM via bios, installing/using powertools and it's plugins for proper color saturation, etc. And once done, your "fidgeting" remains. This is not even close. 3- the difference in results once both are optimised changes the conclusion here... On the Ally you obtain a smooth and steady(thanks to freesync on top of VRR) 720p45fps(that looks like 900p thanks to RIS), on high settings (or 1080p30 on medium settings and still freesync). On the Deck you obtain a pretty steady 720p30fps(with no freesync) at native settings at best(a mix of medium high) and believe me in later big boss and more demanding stages(strider mission) it will dip(yet not stay)lower than 30... you can also opt for a constantly fluctuating 45to35fps on low settings, but going up to 60fps on closed stages and down to low 30's/mid 20's in later stages and bosses and even lower if you don't use the dynamic resolution scaling on...This without freesync. 4 - Even on this present video, which only shows the tutorial and a small part of the City(not even the first boss), you can already see his Deck going to the mid 30's and he is mostly on low settings, so i legit can't see how on high in later stages you do not witness the frame dips i talk about(to the 20's), especially since they do happeb for all supports(console and pc) and are mentioned in many legit sites/forums hence why they recommend the 30fps and dynamic resolution scaling to adress the issue and for a more consistent and steady experience. I'd like to ensure you: I love both my Deck and Ally and have no reason to bash on any of them. I'm just talking facts here. The Deck version is wonderfully optimised(better than on the Ally for sure) and runs great, but let's not blow this out of proportions, when it comes to sheer visuals and performances, the Ally does way better.
@@killzekat He's not using cryo-utilities or anything like that. He mentioned that in a comment below and indirectly through the video; he just recently wiped his deck clean because his touch screen wasn't working. So the performance displayed was even without adding all the extra stuff you mentioned. So on a stock steamdeck, you see the performance he was receiving. Compared to what I'm guessing is stock Ally settings. We already know which he preferred. It's in the video. You see it, I see it. Those are also facts. Like I said, everyone has different experiences with their devices. I assure you, I am playing on a mix of high/medium settings, I always have my fps counter on, and in my play-though so far (currently on chapter 3) have never seen the game drop to anything in the 20s. Ever. I'll even open the game right now, do a mission that I feel like was most graphically intense, and come back and edit this with the results.
@@h.serafin1489 He may not ne using Cryo yet that does not change the point since i'm comparing both devices at their best... On top using data's you can see all over TH-cam, Reddit, SteamDeck HQ...So this is not about only MY results but about MOST results. You may have not noticed it but the results i mention for the Deck are actually WAY better than his on the video...Remember he plays on LOW while i specified playing at a mix of medium/high settings. And sorry but you are guessing wrong. On the Ally : Setting custom TDP is stock, Activating RIS also is, as modifying VRAM, VRR and Freesync also are... Everything is available out of the box and you use it by fidgeting on the settings like you do on your Deck for TDP, framerate, fsr, etc. On the other end I could have talked you about modifying registry files, power management settings, disabling cores or using a app called G'Helper, Handheld companion,etc..Which provide even better and more consistent results on the Ally, yet i didn't. I just compared the Deck at it's best with Cryobites, VRAM at 4Gb,etc. With Armory Crates basic setup... And if you're on chapter 3 then you don't know what i'm talking about when mentioning later stages/boss. But still, even using your case, what we're comparing is a native 720p locked at 45fps or (1080p30fps) high settings with freesync on the Ally(it can go way higher in fps for sure and it does even gets higher than 100fps in some places) against a 800p that fluctuate between 30-45 all along with medium/high settings. There is a difference in saying the AC6 is better optimised on the Deck therefore plays great on it and saying that the Deck provide better performances and visuals than the Ally...
