    • @CFU

      I found the Deck to be easier at the surface level (just downloading your compatible stuff from your library and launching it), but the Ally to be easier for anything that would have needed Desktop Mode on the Deck. The Ally's launcher isn't bad - but no Steam Deck.

    Why do you like this more that the g14 I am deciding between the ally and g14?

    • @CFU
      @CFU  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There is actually a KILLER deal on the G14 on Best Buy right now that puts it at $100 more than the Ally. My experience was a few years ago. I don't remember the exact price but it was well over $1000 and I was hoping to use it as both a laptop and a gaming machine. It kind of felt like a jack of all trades master of none. The price was competing with a decent Mac but it had comparatively awful fit and finish, battery, screen etc. I know they are completely separate machines serving drastically different purposes, but the experience as a laptop really let me down. Gaming was okay... but the fans, battery and needing to have a mouse or controller around made it tough for me. I know the Ally shares similar flaws, BUT (assuming the best buy sale isn't running) it is a LOT cheaper, a LOT smaller, a LOT quieter and has a controller built in. Instead of being jack of all trades it is more a master at games which use a controller and... honestly a good experience hooked up to a monitor like you could do with a laptop also. Not great for doing "laptop stuff" at your coffee shop though.

    What sort of battery life are you seeing on this thing? Do many of your games run in the 9w mode? And how have you found battery life for emulated games? Thanks!

    • @CFU
      @CFU  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Check out the performance section of the video for details. TLDR for 1080p 10 watt for up to 360 era games, 15 watt for last gen and 25/30 for modern. 15 was generally more performant than Steam Deck. It has about 1 hour battery at 25 watts.

  • @JDabz96
    @JDabz96 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I rarely have outlets on a plane, unless you have multiple battery banks, this doesnt seem as viable as the deck on the go to me, i would just need the deck and no power bank.

    • @CFU
      @CFU  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      In my experience, I have always had power for international flights. I do see a niche for the deck for longer domestic travel though. 10 watt mode should give 3-4 hours of battery on the Ally which wouldn't cover a coast to coast flight.

    _Why did you hit me with the Mario 64 nostalgia?? 😭_
    This was surprisingly a great practical comparison 👏 The faster battery charging point was something I hadn't considered, and that does make the Ally more attractive during frequent travels. The performance stats you provided sounded real and you compared the watt levels and fps realistically with the Deck. But somehow, you still managed to make the same "error" was a lot of others -- one can easily buy the 64gb Steam Deck model and just buy a 512gb microSD card for $50, which brings the total to $450, and that is $250 cheaper than the Ally. Like you said, on a budget, the Deck is the best value for the performance and battery balance :)
    Btw, great video, well filmed and edited, and good points made. Appreciate the effort ⭐ I wonder if not having permanent residency is a personal choice -- if so, I'm curious as to what the reason could be :)

    i have the SD with windows only (debloated) and it runs really well. the Ally is appealing to me though. did you miss the trackpads at all when you were in desktop mode or did you just use it like a tablet?

    • @CFU
      @CFU  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I did not miss the trackpads personally. In general, I found "Big Picture" on the deck to be better than the Window's front end launcher but Windows to be much better in desktop mode than Steam Deck. The touch controls are solid on W11, keyboard comes up when you expect etc. I frequently docked both my deck and Ally to a monitor + MK as well.

      It is funny that there really are not a lot of true "next gen" games - most stuff is still crossover. A few examples while trying to avoid some of the infamously bad recent PC ports would be Plague Tale Requiem and Returnal. The Ally still can have trouble with these as well. Crossgen the Steam Deck can totally play.

    You haven't really get into the depth of steam input at all my bro.
    Be it Virtual menus, or additional 20+ input on trackpads.
    I can relate to your case, you'd need normal window device more than gaming focused device like steamdeck because you want to work and travel at the same time.
    But to others who only want to just game, don't "but I don't need more buttons than normal controller" me, because you aren't real pc user when you only play console ported games.

    • @CFU
      @CFU  ปีที่แล้ว

      While not as versatile as the trackpads, there are still paddles. You can hold a paddle plus a button for more inputs. I play docked a LOT, and then I just use a full M+K. I personally don't miss the trackpads.

    • @chariothe9013
      @chariothe9013 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CFU and steam input can do double press, long press other than regular press to trigger different bindings on pretty much any buttons, combining with mode shift, action set and control layers. Which will give you the same result as those paddles, or even more. There are still plenty of PC games that buttons on Ally isn't enough to play them.
      Many reviewers just failed to mention this pros of extra control options on steamdeck for their viewers. I'm sure someone out there like myself 3 months ago didn't know that trackpads are more than just mouse control, now I'm happy I can fully enjoy heavy keybinding games on handheld without feeling like needing a keyboard.

      As a pc gamer who's used the steam controller and owned a steam deck.... I throughly detest the touch pads so much so that I sold the steam controller & if the deck had a trackpadless version I'd opt for that. So, with personal bias of course, I personally don't think track pads are more important than better spec, performance, & access to my full game library.

    • @JDabz96
      @JDabz96 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @Jonathan Muse I strongly disagree, but that's my opinion. I really use the trackpads a lot. They have so much customizability. One track pad can become 6 different inputs, like a radial pad, so good for mmos, I just can't imagine playing mouse input games without it, or navigating the desktop, I set it up like a trackball. It's so goood.

    • @thehumanracesucks1017
      @thehumanracesucks1017 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Dabbinz J I respect it, and more power to you! But if you're looking to play most AAA games, they offer native joystick controller support which is definitely more accurate in a competitive scene than track pads. ASUS has also done a great job making windows navigable with controller input. So if you're a performance/power user looking to play AAA games in the best quality & competitively, the rog is for you. If you're looking to play more indie&pc only/non competitive games & the best graphics/high fps aren't what you're worried about, steam deck all the way. I think both devices serve a niche of the handheld pc users. I'm jealous you like the track pads, they do sound pretty sweet if tuned right.

    I like the review, but I disagree in his last assessment. “The king of compact travel friendly gaming” is not the Ally.
    The GPD Win 4 is the king of compact travel friendly gaming. With integrated keyboard and mouse pad it’s a game changer.
    The Steam Deck is the King of low cost value- at $399 nothing else comes near it. At $360 on sale you guessed it.
    I personally bought the $799 32gb 8”, 65Wh AOK ZOE A1 Pro, but my son’s Win 4 has an appeal that it’s just different. So easy to carry and the mouse and keyboard are always accessible. Not for work, obviously, since it’s a thumb keyboard; but for quick windows commands and searches.
    ROG Ally is the King of handheld 120fps. But when running on battery power, I’m ok with 40fps.

    rog ally is very weak to ideal gaming experience still unable to reach 60 fps. 35 fps at 720p is barely acceptable not alone worth record games from it. 720p on 24 inch monitor is pretty much pixel mess, and Almost everybody use it just for gaming without using discord or browser at same time anyway. I think steam deck is perfect for these less demanding games. If you want to get serious gaming perfomance on go on these modern demanding games, you are much better off with laptop.rog ally is pretty much only good just for playing exclusive non steam or game pass games only.
