Have you heard of the Mennonites? They are an offshoot of the Amish (a sub-sect of Christianity that originates in Switzerland in the 1800s). Today, the Mennonites live in small communities around the Midwest, USA, as well as in Belize, Bolivia and other countries in Latin America. What's fascianting is that they live a completely isolated life without the use of internet, TV or music -- something that is almost impossible to comprehend in today's society.
Thanks to my friends Zach and Janki, I was able to get secret access into a Mennonite community in northern Wisconsin, where I was able to learn about their bizarre way of life. I was even invited into one of their homes for a meal, and it was an out-of-body experience, to say the least!
What do you think about the Mennonites? Do you agree or disagree with their way of life? I'd love to hear from you in the comments below!

Just out of curiosity, have you ever heard of Mennonites before watching this video? I really enjoyed telling this story and this year, I plan to share more stories about the lesser known communities in the USA 🇺🇸
In a family guy episode, yes. When their car breaks down and they end up in an Amish community and Peter makes a joke saying something like "By Mennonites", but I always thought Mennonites and Amish were the same.
Yep. There are some that live here. You see them in the stores. They shop at Walmart too. Tommy is from Ohio and used to the Amish so he was surprised to see the Mennonites out at the stores and restaurants here but we are used to it. I grew up Southern Baptist (my Dad was a Preacher) and we weren't allowed to wear pants or listen to secular music (think Duggars). When we flooded during hurricane Harvey, the Red Cross or FEMA were nowhere to be seen but the Mennonites showed up with plates of food and helped people clean up their flooded homes. Good people.
Some of my ancestors were Mennonites. Thanks for this video!
@@Flamableninja, Mennonite is a more modern version of Amish. Amish don’t have electricity or phone and they drive horse and buggy. They don’t indulge in any modern lifestyle or have modern amenities. Mennonites drive cars and have electricity, but like the Amish, the don’t have internet or watch television
Knew about it from "breaking amish" reality tv show where amish/mennonites moves to New York
Where I live in Canada, I'm surrounded by Mennonites. They are the kindest and hardworking people I've ever met. I'm in Hvac and everytime I'm in a Mennonite house for work they always invite me to stay for dinner.
I’m in Canada too🤩🥰

This is honestly better than living on my freaking phone all day. Good for them, i wish them the best.

I grew up a Mennonite and I am Nigerian. Yes I went to college and became a doctor, but I won’t trade my upbringing in the Mennonite faith for anything. It helped to equip me with principles that I still apply to my daily life. Thank you drew for this, when I saw the clip on IG I couldn’t help but come watch it here🎊🎊🍾🎉🎉🎉

I'm Catholic (our parish is tiny). The Mennonites are some of the best people you will ever meet. I'm in a wheelchair, and they have built me, not one, but TWO handicapped ramps. The first one was built when I still used a walker, 15 years ago. Last year, now that I use a wheelchair, they came back and built a new ramp that is not as steep. They did this for free!! I only had to buy the lumber. The ladies came to visit with me, while the men worked on the ramp. They brought food as well. One of the ladies has adopted two black inner city girls. They are amazing people who truly live their Christianity.

In most Catholic churches there is no sense of community anymore. Most people just come to church , stick to themselves and go home. It was not that way in the Bible with Jesus. They can learn from these people.

Drew’s whole attitude has propped me up through family deaths, illness, moving. Early on, when he said “We are all the same,” I burst into tears, as I believe that, too.
We have an incredible Mennonite and Amish community in Holmes County Ohio. The most honest hard working folks I’ve had the pleasure to work with. ✝️

When i moved from asia to the US and went to college in the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia, it was the first time i’ve known about the Mennonites and they are the kindest people. I went to their church and the pastor even invited me over to his house for thanksgiving since i had no family around. Miss the good times spent with them.
I know no community is perfect. Nor is there always an ideal lifestyle. But the Mennonite for the most part have found a balance. They admit they have all the same struggles as the rest of us. Nicely done Drew and team.
Well said!

I respect the Mennonites, they are admirable for staying devoted to their beliefs and values that they cherish. Some people interpret this as boring and a mundane lifestyle, when in reality, it is a gifted culture these people live in. Mennonites are not like the general public always flocking to buy the latest products or living their lives on social media or getting involved in many wrongful acts, but they cherish and desire a simple life. That is what most of us forget. Love from Trinidad 🇹🇹❤🇺🇸
true
As someone who was born outside of the West, immigrated to it as a child and therefore grew up in the West but have seen life outside of it, now that I am 30 I am so done with living in this culture of decadence, selfishness, narcissism, and sinful behavior. I would quite gladly go and live as the Mennonites do or live among them. I have nothing but respect for the small groups of men and women around the world who live as humbly as they do.
And best of all... they aren't harming anyone else and are tolerant of other lifestyles. honestly zero reason to hate them

Yes, if all world living are equal like the Mennonite people then the world will be better for us all ❤
About 4 months ago I received an invite to a Thanksgiving singing from some mennonites and was then invited to the Lena mennonite church and I have to say it was the most beautiful religious experience I ever had!! It's intriguing to me, as a Dutch just like Menno Simons used to be, that these stems of religion dating back to the 16th century are still in place today, with no following back in the homeland. I notice a lot of shared values of how my father used to grow up back in the 60's in rural Eastern Netherlands: large families, being self-sufficient, belief, hard working, making the best of the land and a sense of down-to-earthness and being welcome. It seems like these communities across the world preserved, in a way, what farmer life in the Netherlands used to be like back in the day.
yes I agree- it's so bizarre!
'Doopsgezinden' we say, but yeah, as they are so open-minded and integrated in society, they're under the radar.
@@drewbinskyhow is it bizzare? Its just different from your sheep like life
@@drewbinskyyou keep bra ding it bizzare? Why??? You are being very patronising and judgemental. I as an African find many of their ways relatable. Stop constantly calling other people's beliefs and ways of life as bizarre simply because they are not identical to your way of life.... Let them be.
you did a wonderful job Mr.Drew, as always.🎉🎉 keep on thed good work and thank you so much.
What all we need i noticed from This Video is Drews attitude towards the people he meets...
The just absorbs and never questions the ideals of the people he meet, in this video or everywhere he goes.
U dont have to like every Available ideal out there, just dont come off hating whatever is against your ideals, thats when people can learn from you
They're not trapped, they the ones who escaped.
The wife is treated like a baby making cow and the only reason most of them accept their life is because it's all theyve ever known. It's an illusion of choice. They have no internet or computer skills, social skills, people skills, tolerance... no experience etc. So the ones that do escape, end up becoming addicts in real world. The communism thing they have going works well though.
Agreed!

One thing I give them credit for is that don’t try to push their beliefs on anyone. They have a live and let live attitude. At least for those outside the group. I feel bad for people within the group who may be gay or curious about the world because they’ll be ostracized from family and friends

I have family in PA and there was a Mennonite family across the street from my grandma's house in a subdivision. I never interacted with them, just a wave if I caught one of them outside so I don't know about their life. Your video is very interesting and I think that as with the Amish, there are variations within the Mennonite religion. For example, the family I had seen had three children and didn't live on a farm. Thank you for continuing to showcase tribes of humanity that most of us have no knowledge of!

Good morning, there is a group in Brodhead Wisconsin that you could visit their church if you were interested. It's called Pleasant View Mennonite Church. If you MapQuest it will show up. Have a blessed day!
PS their church service starts at 10:00 a.m. on Sundays. If you just showed up I can pretty much guarantee someone's going to ask you if you would like to come over for lunch and the afternoon for visiting.
This was a wonderful video. Thank you.
I stayed with a Mennonite family down in Filadelfia, Paraguay. Very different than the Mennonites in this video and Pennsylvania where I went to university. They used internet because I booked through AirBnB and were a bit more modern but super nice and hard working. It was a great experience.
This is what it looks like when a community works together instead of be forced to compete with each other for somebody else profit motives.
This is so nostalgic and adorable to see a community like this! 🥰💙
Thank you very much for knowledge and good community people living
Wow this such a great vlog! We can all take something from this great community ❤
As a Muslim from a religious background, I found so much similarities with Orthodox Jews and Orthodox Christians. How they carry themselves, their personal relationship with God, mannerisms, tight knit families and alot other than I can't find the word for. Peace to all People of The Book! God bless
Ps: maybe it's the large family dynamic 🤔
Please don't draw similarities when there are none!! These Mennonites have not spread carnage around the world! You don't see refugees desperately trying to escape their countries and filling up Europe! It is insulting to them!! They are Christians! They don't claim to be peaceful, they ARE peaceful. Always, living in their own reality just like they are the 'peaceful' community...Yeah right!! No place in the world is safe.....

Great video! Yes, I have heard of them. I rode a bike century once out of Harrisonburg, VA, where there is a large community of Mennonites. During the last 10 miles we rode through farms where they only use horses and buggies, much like the Amish. There is actually a pretty wide disparity on amount of technology different enclaves will use. Even in Harrisonburg they range from horse and buggie and no electricity (much like the Amish) to cars, tractors and electricity. My understanding is they still won't drive flashy cars, so think black pickup truck or minivan as opposed to red Corvette. They were all incredibly friendly and said hi and waved as we went through. And those farms were just immaculately clean!
Also, I think there are quite different beliefs on college education among different communities. Eastern Mennonite University is located in Harrisonburg. Back in the 1980's, my mother had a good friend she worked with who was an RN and her family were practicing Mennonites. I also once met a woman who was a physician and a practicing Mennonite. I'm pretty sure all true Mennonites might reject more "worldly" higher degrees, but I think professions geared towards helping others like medicine are generally O.K. Also, you may not follow cycling, and this may bring up a bad example, but former pro cyclist Floyd Landis grew up Mennonite (the guy who won the 2006 Tour and was disqualified for doping). I think like the Amish, some of them have a Rumspring as an adult (basically living out in the world) and then decide whether the faith is for them and either return or don't. He was one of the ones that didn't. But apparently, you are still accepted by your family if you follow those rules even if you choose to leave the faith. It's the ones who decide to live the life and later change their minds, or don't walk the walk that get in outs with the community or their families.
I find all of the different German Baptist sects captivating (Amish, Mennonite, Quakers, etc.), and have a deep respect for their high standards and conviction. I'll watch with great interest all the videos you wish to do on any of them!
Great vlog Drew. Really interesting. Great and genuine people.
Dear Drew. Thank you very much for this respectful video. Greetings from North Germany. In our Area we have some very liberal Mennonite Churches. Dieing churches, mostly old people. In other areas we have different groups. Many came frome Russia the last 40 years and they are very conservative. Others came von Paraguay. Best wishes and greetings.
Great video. I have great respect for these communities, live and let live. I'd like to point out though that these people are driving cars and have electricity, so not exactly living in the 1800's.
The problem is that they don’t often have a live and let live mentality when it comes to those that leave their community. Shunning is encouraged and very common

This is a great introductory video to anabaptist religions. You make some very broad generalizations, however, with some of your facts. Rules in Amish, Mennonite, and Hutterite (and any smaller break away groups) communities are going to vary, sometimes greatly, from community to community. It was a very great video of this particular group, though, great job. ❤
this was so cool drew. thanks for making videos.
Thank you for these type of videos where you show different cultures and religions. This type of content is like a education in entertaining way, broadens our views.
as a Muslim, I am glad to see religious Christians, as its get rare day after day
keep Believing in God my brothers and sisters in faith🌹❤️
We are all brothers and sisters in the sense that God created all of us.
But Jesus is the name that every knee will bend to, as He is the Lord of the universe and of salvation of lost souls. Jesus Himself said "I'm the way the truth and the life nobody comes to the Father except through Me". Come join us brother, we love you!
I agree. Traditionally most Christians are supposed to be like this but we have become a bit too liberal and secular. Muslims need to understand that Western does not equal Christian. Most Westerners are Christiand by history only but do not practice so strictly are not Christian. I think often Muslims do not recognise this and have wrong perceptions of Christianity.
Beautiful eye opening video
Amazing video drew ! Thank you so much 😊😊😊😊
My grandpa lives in Central Ohio and lives near a lot of Amish and Mennonites. Every time I head out there I’m guaranteed to see at least one horse and buggy. I haven’t seen a lot of Amish Churches but I’ve seen a lot of Mennonite Churches. It’s definitely a unique experience to see their lifestyle in person.
The Amish don't have churches, they gather for their services in each others homes.
Amish do at home services that’s why you don’t see Amish churches
That explains a lot!!!
Their tradition is somewhat like the Jewish community from brooklyn. Thanks for sharing drew!👍💯
No there not like the Jewish people in Brooklyn the Jews in Brooklyn go to college and university and used Internet and don't dress like theses people the Jewish woman dress very sharp beautiful clothes and the men too dress in Western clothes gimme break don't Mix theses people with the Jews of NYC Jewish people play musical instruments listen to radio TV used laptops the Jewish people are up to date they mingle with others your other Jew hater 🤬piss off !!

Always heard the words mennonites but never knew what it was, very informative and cool video. I learned a lot.
They seemed like the kindess peoplr you could ever meet. What a blessing for them to welcome you in
Just from the look of their faces, you can see that they are kind. No anger in their eyes. They look gentle and contented. The woke people will not survive in this environment. 😂
Drew please explore the northeastern parts of India like Assam, Karbi Anglong, Mizoram, etc.
This was amazing thank you drew for the videos! I love binge watching your videos!! Even the ones I watched already
I never heard of Mennonites prior to this video. This is awesome, so much to learn from them.
My dad is a older ored Mennonite community form Lancaster Pennsylvania and He moved to Potter New York and married my mom who is English. He raised us kids under new order Mennonite. We was homeschool and only when up to the 8 grade. Start at the age of 14 years old boys will start working on the farm and girls are learning how to take care of the home and kids and learning how to cook and bake and canning and cleaning and sawing. I'm a new order Mennonite and married to a older order Amish.
Wow thanks for sharing! Did you grow up with a strict lifestyle ?
It appears new order Mennonites are allowed internet access.
English from English or an American who you also call English 😁
@@user-po8no1xp6e Given that Shawn is Mennonite, "English" means "English-speaking non-Amish/Mennonite," because strict Amish and Mennonite will speak Low German with each other.
