  • Here we are going through the steps I normally go through in brining an old Postwar Lionel engine back to life. The engine we are working on is a 2363 IL Central. We take a look at cleaning and servicing the motors, E unit, and trucks.

    I know this is an old video but I just wanted to say that I agree with what you said about just jump in and figure it out. If one has any mechanical knowledge these things are pretty much a breeze for the most part to work on.
    Back when I started working on them there was no internet, manuals were terribly expensive, and a pocket camera with capabilities to communicate with other people was unheard of! It is so much easier now then it was then to find information and parts then it ever was, especially for someone like me who lives in an area that there are no hobby shops or train shows for hundreds of miles.
    I was told by a renowned restorer that good old 30 weight oil was what he uses and that’s pretty much what Lionel used back in the day so anything else is pretty much overkill.
    Anyway the only thing I could add to your video is in my opinion as a paint and body man by trade, Armor All, furniture polish, anything with silicone has absolutely no business on paint. Use waxes or polishes instead and really and truly from where most of these things don’t get handled all that often, once a lifetime of application is really enough unless you store them outside lol.

    Just picked up a junk 2020 that someone else tried to repair, and oh boy did they do a number on it. I'm in the process of re-winding all of the coils on the motor, as the field coil was loosened by the prior owner and was turned to copper spaghetti. E-Unit is totaled, no point in trying to fix it, so I'm replacing it with a quick circuit that replaces both the E-Unit and the bell/whistle signal detector. I'm using the spare parts and some aluminum casting magic to make an O-27 compatible semiscale Southern Pacific 4449.

    Joe don’t be nervous it’s easy to do. Lol. Zach those 2363 are beautiful!!!! I’ve heard them refer to the horizontal engines as growlers they have a distinctive sound to them them. I find more satisfaction pulling the horizontals apart. Soldering is a science just take your time once again Zack awesome video.

    • @CountryBunkersTrains
      @CountryBunkersTrains  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! I too enjoy working on the horizontal motors a little more than the verticals as well. They seem to be a tiny bit easier. Plus they used screws for everything (including the trucks). Not a big fan of the press fit pieces without screws on these units.

    Good video. You may do this. I take a brass wire wheel to the pickup rollers and wheels. Works great removing and cleaning. Also lightly lube axles.
    Q-tips are great for cleaning crud out of brush holders. I use a bit of denatured alcohol. Great tip on keeping shell away from work area! Denatured alcohol will kill a shells finish.
    I was lucky and had a friend show me how to maintain/repair these marvels of engineering.

    Hi Zack, great video it will help me get my postwar 2353 Santa Fe engine moving again. Around Christmas I took it apart found the wheels were very hard to turn. Cleaned the wheels off with alcohol and q - tip oiled the wheels and gears. It ran for a while and then locked up. I guess I need to clean the motor and put some oil in it. But I think it might be the old grease in the gear box. Thank you for all your information because I will take it apart again and hopefully this time with success. Love all your videos and appreciate all that you do for the model train hobby. Wish I knew how to do TH-cam so I can show my layout being built. It’s 28 x 4 and goes into 16x 13.3 then another 35 ft plus the other side is 38 ft x 8 ft. I’m 71 and trying my best to get it all done. My locomotive’s are all Lionel and rolling stock. I had a layout at my Dad’s house it was a lot smaller. He pasted away the layout came apart and now I’m building a new Hi Rail set up in memory of my Dad. He also worked for the Lackawanna Railroad, Erie Lackawanna, Conrail , and last NJ Transit when he retired. Also most of my family worked for the Railroad also. It’s hard here in NC because there is no model train store’s except Lionel’s retail Store in Concord NC it’s the closest. Happy Railroading .

    I was having similar problems with my grandpa’s Lackawanna FM Trainmaster that i inherited after he passed. I took it all apart and found a few solder joints broken and it overall just needed a good cleaning and she was back in business. The main thing like you said is maintenance. If you maintain those engines, or any engine for that matter, they can run for an extremely long time.

    Always love Postwar f 3's. They are all awesome. Do you have any FM Units? I'm currently looking at a 2331 Blue & Yellow FM. If it all comes together, I might be able to swing this deal. And you are right Zack. Once you start collection Postwar it gets into the blood. My story is simple. My dad left me a 2343 ABA (with the passenger cars) along with a 622 and plenty of 6464 box cars. Then years later, my Aunt gave me a 2243, AB and assorted rolling stock . I still have them all. About 5 years ago my oldest son came running up the stairs with my 2343 in his hands., Apparently, he found my stash! He asked me if we could see if it runs. I agreed. I set the track up. Too my surprise, it did run. Not very well, but it ran. I found a Lionel Service Center in my area. I brought the 2343 to : LeBlanc Train & Hobby Center. He fixed my engine for a great price. Then, I gave him all my 2500 series Passenger cars for servicing. He has tons of original parts. Name plates, doors, wires, rollers, etc.. He fixed it all. Ever since that day, I'm hooked. Every chance I get I increase my Postwar collection. Great to see you highlighting these beauties on your channel. Keep up the good work.
    Thanks,
    Charlie
