    Since I live in California, my favorite has to be the Western Pacific F3s. I have a pair of 2355s and I always enjoy watching a mini California Zephyr run around my layout. Great video.

    I always admired that Lionel was brave enough to do paint schemes most manufacturers wouldn’t dare doing

    Great video and extremely informative. I'm thrilled to have the 2343 Santa Fe ABA passeger set and the 2356 Southern ABA both in near mint condition. These are amazing models and are amazing pullers on my layout.

    We got those locos here in sweden both diesel and electric locos.
    They where boulit by NOHAB in Sweden under licence from GM.
    NOHAB made these for the DSB as Class Tmy and for NSB as Di3.
    They also made the ra loco, the electrical motor was made by ASEA.
    Keep up the good work.
    And thanks for uploading the video.

    Born in 1953 my Dad built in our basement a 3 mountain level tiered layout with plenty of lumber and painted cement for the mountains that he started in 1958. Our Santa Fe passenger trainset was from 1960 and there were blue stripes on the sides of the passenger cars. .You mention the Texas Special also had a matching trainset of passenger cars but did all these units offer a matching set of passenger cars such as New York Central? I have read Santa Fe passenger trainsets sold by far the best. I never became a model railroader but Lionel must have rubbed off on me because many years later I rode all the AMTRAK long distance routes west of St. Louis / Chicago, and became interested in rail history with those 1950s era passnger trains my favorites. Not shown in this video was a Union Pacific all yellow passenger trainset offered at some point during the 1950s. I really liked seeing your Lionel units of the rail companies.

    My most favorite EMD F3 diesel locomotives are the Santa Fe’s, the Lackawanna’s which became the Erie Lackawanna on October 17,1960 & the Lehigh Valley’s FT units which were mostly used in helper service as pusher engines out of Coxton yard near Pittston,PA to the top of Penobscot Mountain just outside of Wilkes-Barre,PA & the New York Central in their lightening stripe scheme.

      We have one of those at the museum I work at. In fact I have a video of it on my page pulling a long train of postwar metal truck cars. Agreed, it pulls very well, and having cars cleaned and lubed helps too. Postwar cars glide nicely when the trucks are properly serviced.

    it's always bothered me that it seems, even though for a number of years Lionel offered an NYC counterpart to their Santa Fe, the NYC units are few and far between compared to how many Santa Fe ones I see being sold- It makes me inclined to think that the Santa Fe simply sold more units, with its bright colorful scheme, and/or perhaps the NYC is simply a more cherished model, so less people want to part with them- in all likelihood, I imagine both to be the case.

    • @dbluepickle40
      @dbluepickle40 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I believe that in the end the Santa Fe units sold better than the New York Central ones. Likely because of the brighter paint scheme.

    • @lionellines6351
      @lionellines6351 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lionel marketed two F3s in 1948-49: 2333 Santa Fe, and 2334 (although the number boards still read 2333) New York Central. Their marketing plan was that families living in the western United States would recognize the colorful Warbonnet scheme, and buy a locomotive that was from their neck of the woods. They anticipated the same happening with people in the east-they would recognize the Lightning scheme, and buy it because of familiarity.
      But in reality, the Santa Fe models outsold the New York Central ones, even in the east, because people loved how colorful they were. While I won’t deny that they’re beautiful, I kind of like the NYC models better. The Lightning scheme is so striking.
      I just bought a 2344 A-A set, and I can’t wait to run them. They’re beautiful.

      NYC has such a rugged industrial look that is more interesting to me. So far I only have a B unit that will be run with two NYC geeps.
      If I was modeling Santa Fe I would get the American Models blue Fs for freight service. Lionel's warbonnets are silly pulling so much freight.

    • @leverettrailfan5414
      @leverettrailfan5414 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MilwaukeeF40C Yeah there's something about that gray lightning stripe scheme that just looks wicked cool. Some day I'll own one (I hope)...
      I have an orphan B unit too- a 2378c. I got it with a lot of stuff, at a simply unbeatable price... but sadly no 2378P. I'll be searching for one the rest of my life lol
      Lionel wasn't known overall for true realism, figures they'd use the ATSF passenger livery for freight sets too- I recall reading the gray lightning strip NYC livery was for passenger, black was for freight (at least originally?), the CNJ Trainmasters were never blue and orange of course, and the Lionel New Haven F3s wear a paint scheme that was only used on a pair of Fairbanks Morse P-12-42 locomotives built for use with an experimental Talgo train. They made plenty of "unprototypical" pain jobs for their trains! But I think that's also one of those curious little charms about old Lionel that makes them endearing to collect.

    Is your 2379 Rio Grande an early postwar F3 under the hood? When it ran, it sounded like it had the horizontally mounted “growler” motors.
